I KNOW the Answer is 9, and I'm a senior in College with over a 3.5 GPA. This all came about when my friend got into a discussion about it and they ended up betting $100 and she wont pay up. In order to get 1, you have to include an extra set of parantheses. Or, 6/[2 (1+2)]. As written, it's 9. Division and multiplication rank equally in precedence.

The second problem is the use of shorthand. Your formula is 6÷2×(1+2) when written out fully.

6/2 is three. Fractions count the same as decimals when you are doing math in order. So 1.5 and 3/2 are the same thing. Division and fractions are the same thing but different.

Being a math major (Senior, 3.6 GPA), I would read it as a fraction and thus get 1. But I agree with the above. It's one of those stupid things people do to just act like they're smarter than everyone else. If you do not read it as a fraction, yeah, the answer is 9.

I’m a math professor, and my view is that although the standard convention, if applied precisely and rigorously, does give an unambiguous procedure to follow, nobody, and that includes professional mathematicians, would ever write a formula like this. This is mostly because, after about 3rd grade, none of us ever use the division symbol ever again.

Also note that different calculators evaluate the expression differently, as shown on the page (the original "troll post" uses the division operator '÷' instead of the slash '/').

A lot of people see it as 6/(2(1+2)) which you would start the problem in the parentheses and would get the answer 1 but in reality you divide the 6 into 2 than multiply it by 3 which gives you 9.

Some other ways to solve the problem could be : 6/2 x (1+2) or (6/2) x (1+2) which equals 9.

In most cases you always go left to right like this problem that is orignally written. Now if the problem was like the one I originally mentioned to get the answer 1, you would solve the problem from right to left
