Okay the title pretty much says it all I'm looking for a new car, or a new to me car. I am trying to get on disability while I'm in school, and I will need a newer more fuel efficient vehicle. My big ol' truck isn't going to cut it when I have to commute again. I am looking at the Honda Civic, MINI, and the Scion tC. Have you guys heard anything about those vehicles or suggest anything different. Thanks guys.

My price range is 15,000 after a down payment so the new Focus is out of my price range . I have not driven them yet I havent gotten any word yet on if I will get it yet or not, they said it could take 3 to 4 months to hear if I had been denied or accepted. So I am going to hold off until I have the first check in hand, I was looking at certified pre-owned because most dealers have some type of warranty. I have driven the Scion XD and thats a nice little car but I dont want a 4 door unless I absolutely have to.

I agree with Brian. I had a Honda Civic and an Acura TL. You'll also get great gas mileage with the Civic too

Honda has the best record for reliability. Mini's are nice but make sure you have a dealer/service in your area. Honda accord is the wifes next car. Scion I have no experience with.

If I had it to do over again I would have got a Honda. I have had my axiom for 11 yrs. Runs like new. A few scratches. And I have a 12 inch sub and major amps in the back. I'm not in my 20's anymore. Bees to convert it back into a family car, but don't have the heart. I have heard the chevy and ford ecomony cars have been good. Hyaundi (spelling) are pretty popular lately and I know 3 owners who love em. Low cost and easy o the gas.

Well what I meant by "new" was latest generation. They've been rolling off the lines for two years now, so you should easily be able to find one that's CPO or gently used in your price range. Best car in its class IMHO.

I personally wouldn't recommend a Mini just based off of their recent reliability record and the fact that I just don't dig the dinner plate speedo in the center of the dash (subjective though, just an opinion). But they are fun little cars with some great driving dynamics. Unfortunately, the same entity that's responsible for it being a great driver's car (BMW) also engineered in their below average reliability.

The Hyundais that I've rented have gotten excellent gas mileage and have been fun to drive but I would stick with the sonata as it is a decent sized vehicle...

Your OCI goes way up when you go full syn. Don't have to do dino oil change intervals anymore.

But I get where you're coming from, if it's not your cup of tea then keep it off the list.

Depends on the car that you buy. No car has a mandatory synthetic oil requirement. They may have a certain weigh they must have but not the thickness of the oil. You can, however; put synthetic oil in your car. Which is highly encouraged and you don't have to do as many oil changes as you would if you used regular motor oil. So really in the end, you would save more with synthetic. I use synthetic for all my cars and change my oil every 5k miles vs 3k. So for every two oil changes using synthetic oil, you would do three with regular motor oil.

Anyway, with premium gas I can see. In order to get the best performance and to reduce engine knock from the block, a lot of manufactures require you to put premium gas in their cars. Mostly high performance vehicles and luxury. Outside of that, you really only have to put 89 octane for the rest.

Holy shit a quadruple post! Anyway synthetic oil isn't mandatory, but I always use it because you can go 6K miles and sometimes 10K between changes.

As crazy as this ^ may sound, Sam is correct. Some new vehicles, on regular motor oil, can go up to 7k mile between oil changes. I think that's a bit insane but if the manufacture says so, than go for it. I wouldn't, but that's just me

Same here man thats why I talked myself out of it, I like the look of them but now that I have found some certified pre-owned focus's I'm thinking about getting one of them. Though I dont care for Fords but they look pretty sick, and Chevy doesnt really have anything like that yet. Their cars are getting stupid small the Camaro has more room in it than the Impala and Malibu and its a damn sports car.

Haha yeah when I had my BMW, they foot the bill for all scheduled service for 100k and MAGICALLY because that it was on them, the OCI was supposed to be around 15k (was lower before they started the free service crap). Yikes. And they wouldn't change it early, you had to wait for the indicator to go off. Once that took 18k miles because of my driving habits. This on a car whose turbos were oil-cooled no less.

I wouldn't recommend 15k, I wouldn't recommend above 10k, but 10k intervals should be just fine on a daily running full syn.

Also, Chevy has the Cruze which is a decent car itself, very efficient and not super small. I'd still take a Focus over it though.

They passed Toyota and Honda in reliability and had some of the best overall cars from some major awards. They've really turned it around.

I was looking at those but the certified ones were too much money for me, the Focus has better styling and I like the hatch back version better than the regular sedan of the Cruze.

If you can keep your foot out of it get the sportier versions, or even the Ford Taurus they are some slick lookin cars.

Its a deisel if I wanted a turbo on a truck i would just buy a deisel, and thats what my dad also says. Id rather have a big ol' V8 that I know has the power to do things that a light duty truck can do. Im just not convinced that a V6 has the raw power to do what a V8 can do even with a turbo.

My buddy just bought a BMW after having a Honda for years. About $4,000 and 3 repair trips in a month later he gave up and bought a Ford pickup.

I got a denial letter from SS because I havent worked. Well no fucking shit I have been disabled since I was 13. I am going to fight it because the whole thing is bull. I am still lookin at the Focus, the good thing about them denying me is that I will het a big fat check when I get my first payment. So I may be able to get one new or even get a better used one. I can say they are in for a fight, because Im not taking this lying down. And I dont let people tell me what I cant do when I have the right more than anybody else to get it.

Get em!!! Yeah they don't check the facts before denying. I got denied a few months ago, because of my ex wife not paying a 5000 bill. They don't care I don't have any bills and make more than enough for 2 new cars.

I would love one of those, but as a soccer dad and winter driver 8 months a year in montana lol,. I am really wanting the 2013 ford explorer. the eco boost is supposed to really help with fuel economy too.

Im just not too sure if I am sold on the twin turbo'd engine that the eco boost is all about. Does it work as a regular turbo where you have to use premium fuel all the time? If so its not worth it to me in my opinion I would rather have a regular V8 or V6. I should change the name of the thread to Looking for a new car/ Car Talk lol.

The diesels actually get slightly better MPG on at least the Chevys, I think the Fords do too. Only 1-3 MPG, but still an improvement. And the diesels don't lose so much efficiency when towing.

I think my dad averages about 17 to 18 mpg's. Which is the same for my stang lol

yes. you would have to use premium. With any vehicle that has high compression in the engines, you use premium. The lower the quality of fuel, the more likely the gasoline will detonate before it's supposed to and damage the heads in your car.

Anything that is force inducted, (supercharger, turbocharger) you should use it. You DON"T have to, but you increase the risk of damaging your engine, especially if you have a heavy foot.

Then its not worth it to me, yes you get better gas mileage by using a V6 in a F-150 but you have to always use premium gas, that doesnt seem cost effective and there is more things to go wrong. I would rather have that sweet Tritton V8.

Ok update on my current Disability status, I am going to appeal it this afternoon and I am thinking about either having my mom talk to her client who is a lawyer or even have our friend who was the VP of treasury for GMAC. Our friend also wrote the PR statements for them when he was there, I'm not sure on who I will have write the letter or whatever I have to do but I will consult with both people to get a better stance on where I should go. I am hoping that I can get this resolved quickly but if its like everything else in my life its going to be a giant pain in the ass. Im not bitchin just stating a fact, I will keep you guys updated on it, I have a positive attitude about this and if they are expecting me to roll over on it they are in for a big surprise.

It's a golf r. I know it's pricey and I could have got an Sti, but I love it. Waiting for the warranty to run out then ill tune it. I want to get 300 hp out of it
