G should know about this. G, do you think you'll be firing this bad boy?

I've fired a few Excalibur rounds in my 3rd deployment in Iraq, June 2008-2009. Just not on the M777 (the Howitzer piece in the video). I'm on the M109A6 Paladin, been on it my whole career.

That's crazy how much they cost. I guess the person/s they fire on better be someone of importance hahaha

When they first came out with them, they were pretty expensive a few years ago, but now they don't cost as must as before.

Can I buy some surplus? It would be the ideal thing for controlling the pigeon population around here.

Back in 2008, an Excalibur round cost about $85,000. Now they cost a little over $53,000 a round.

I'll have a look down the back of the sofa.

Damn a GPS guided artillery shell next it will be GPS guided rifle bullets.

Which isn't too bad. Our GBUs we load on the fighters really aren't that complex... some of our JDAMS have multiple guidance packages. GPS is actually pretty normal of a guidance system for the "newer" stuff. A typical GBU-54 runs around 30k give or take a few grand.

Which would probably cost about 7,000 a round lol. Snipers only

Think of the possible assassination attempts with something like that... Crazy...

I'm sure some country has something like that in the works. If not already made

They'd have to be reaaaaaly big bullets to fit a guidance system inside. Maybe you could do it with the 20mm round.

I don't know about that. There are so many small gps locator's that i'm sure you could put on in a bullet. Now the bullet may be a bit longer and may require a certain gun to fire it. I'm sure its possible to make a gps guided bullet

Thats some ghost recon stuff goin on right there. That would be cool though if it could eliminate some of the bullet drop.

Nope. There is this thing called Nanotechnology. Wouldn't have to be big at all.

A positioning system small enough to fit in a .50 cal round? The smallest I've heard of are still bigger than micro USB receivers, which won't fit in a .50 round. So even high-tech military ones that are extra-small would be pushing it. Plus you've gotta add the actual control surfaces and the powering for the surfaces. I really think 20mm is the minimum. Maybe a 14.5mm

On smaller caliber stuff, I really doubt you'll see gps bullets. More likely to be handled by the gun.

Right. Sophisticated ballistic computers (like advanced versions of the one shown in Shooter) would be more likely.

"GPS Bullets" is really a misnomer, too. The guidance would be not be GPS-based anyway, since you need precision and you need to avoid obstacles, rather than coming from overhead like a GPS bomb that can penetrate obstacles.

Was saying with nanotechnology it's not out of the realm of possibility of it being possible. Is it likely to happen, no. But I wouldn't put it past R&D to make one just to say they can. =)

And I'm saying with current tech, there's just not enough space there in a .50 cal bullet.

So what your saying is that it is utterly, absolutely, unequivocally, impossible to fit an 8mm tracking dot in to a... what are they, 18mm bullet?

Considering DARPA was supposedly doing exactly this in an article I read, that's a hard claim to make.

I dunno how many of you remember this movie...but this has the "homing" bullet you guys are wishing for, starting at 1:29...lol...

I honestly think that this is the closest we will get to "GPS Bullets" for a while.

Not saying it is absolutely impossible. But a .50 cal is 12.7mm, so you've got <2.5mm on either side of the tracking dot to fit the drivers for the control surfaces, a microcomputer, and the control surfaces themselves without sacrificing the integrity of the bullet such that it doesn't become aerodynamically unstable. Like I said, a 14.5mm round would have a much better shot, and I think you could definitely do it with the 20mm sniper rifle...though who really uses something that big?

I'd like to see the article you are talking about.

Was a Time magazine article on the "Exacto" system. There were a couple others as well.

Spyder is Absolutely right. And another thing is this is only the stuff that they chose to release. You all know darn well there is Technology that hasn't been made public yet. And some of it's going in one direction. Smaller. Hence my comments on nanotechnology and my sarcastic "ok" (that may not have been interpreted as sarcastic). Just because you don't know it exists doesn't mean it doesn't.

True. All I was saying was based on existing, known technology, that it was likely not doable, and probably several years away from actual use if the military's miniaturization has proceeded that far.

In any case, with the precision we have with munitions and the growing role of RPAs, I doubt that guided bullets will ever gain much use.
