Looks like several of these specs put it over the new Xbox. But the no used games is a deal-breaker for me, especially if it requires always-on internet.

I totally agree. Not everyone can afford to have online access and that would make a lot of people mad due to the fact that they would have to pay for interent from an outside source to buy a game

So if both consoles have it, you're going to spearhead the switch to Wii?

That's why I both take these rumors with a grain of salt and don't let activation codes or perma-online things get to me. Mostly because my system is always online and I keep my games for well over 1-2 years before even thinking of trading them in. Plus if I said no to those I wouldn't have a system at all. Besides right now those are rumors and I don't see them doing either. Especially since there will still be games released for the 360 and PS4 after the next gen release that could easily be played on the new systems. Plus they'd be shooting them selves in the foot if newer games like Skyrim, BO2 or Dead Space 3 weren't BC. A lot of lost sales and unhappy people. I know others might not think so but I think they know better than that. At least I hope they do.

Nope. I'm already planning on switching to PC anyway. (Yes, I realize some games there have always-on DRM)

There's nothing in these console requirements that would be solved by switching to PC.
I guess I don't understand how they would be deal breakers on console, but acceptable on PC. Especially when its unlikely a developer would differentiate between the two.

What makes it a deal breaker is the fact that it is console-mandated as opposed to game-by-game. I can pick the ones that are acceptable to me on PC.
It's not really that anyway-I was planning on going back to PC before these rumors started.

That would make sense, but is also why I tend to not believe it.

Rumor update.
The cost for the PS4 will be about $430. Since this was the only cost given it is most likely for the basic model.
There has been hint at a touchscreen/touchpad on the front, back or both of the controller. Something like Vita.
There is also the possibility of enhanced network features like cloud gaming/technology built-in. Which most likely why Gaikai was purchased by Sony last year.
All of this sounds amazing. Let's hope it comes true. What are your thoughts?
So you all know this info is gathered from Machinima through Asahi Shimbun and the Nikkai Daily (Japanese publications).

More rumors for you all. All gathered from VG24/7.
Controllers:
It will still keep it's same size as the dual shock used now but the L2/R2 buttons will be improved upon with a remodeling. The "share" button that was supposed to replace the PS button to upload gameplay will be removed. Most likely the "share" button idea and not the PS button. The new controller will also have a touch pad on the front but no touch screen. The select and start buttons will be moved to accommodate this. And finally there will be no touch pad on the back like the Vita.
So same comfort with bonuses.
Backwards Compatibility:
A quote from Blake Jorgenson (EA's Chief Financial Officer) at a panel at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference.
I think people are going to be pretty excited. An Important thing to remember is that next-gen consoles (XBOX 720 and PS4) will most likely not be backwards compatible.
And if you [ play ] multiplayer on a game, you'll most likely not be able to play with someone on a different generation.
I'm not sure how to take this. It is coming from a publisher yes, but from the CFO of EA. Not from Sony or Microsoft themselves. Again I think both systems would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did this. And again grab your grain of salt. Thoughts?

The PS3 controller is nice, so no complaints there. It does feel a little small in my hands, though. As for backwards compatibility, we'll see. I think the backlash on that would not be as bad as a lot of people think.

The more I think about it, I feel the same in regards to the backlash for the backwards compatibility. That is if it lives up to the hype. Not that I will be one of the ones in line at midnight for a midnight release, but I would get one eventually. My only concern is the "NO USED GAMES" rumors.

Depends largely on the game catalog at release and over the first year. If there are good games early, backwards compatibility becomes largely redundant, and remastered copies of major successful games become the norm.

Right. If major games drop for the PS3 in the 3-4 months before release then the PS4 better have backwards compatibility. If most major games (read: CoD) wait to release for the PS4, then it's going to be a minor issue either way.

Here's a news round up from Machinimas Inside Gaming Daily: PS4 Wild Rodeo News Roundup! Interesting name I know. Here's what they had to say.
The Dual Shock 3 won't work on the PS4. All the special controllers you bought aren't compatible. The are just wiping the slate clean. Confirmed by Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide.
PS4 will play used games. But is there a catch?
That's the general expectation by consumers. They purchase physical form, they want to use it anywhere, right? So that's my expectation.
Shuhei Yoshida then consulted with his Japanese PR advisor and replied:
So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?
Kind of an unsure statement.
PS4 won't play PS3 games, Transfer save files or play current PSN Games.
Killzone: Shadow Fall and Watch Dogs are confirmed as launch titles. Or at least have a launch window with in a month of the PS4 release.
I don't think this will bode well for Sony. But that's my opinion.
ComputerandVideogames.com also had their news round up. Here's what they said:
Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide, has confirmed used games will not be blocked and will be playable on the PS4.
PS4 will not support Dual Shock 3 controllers. But the current Move controllers will be compatible.
Watch Dogs will be a launch title and Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be on PS4. Also heading the way of PS4 is Diablo 3 and the next chapter in Final Fantasy will be revealed at E3. Last Guardian is still unknown but we should "keep an eye out for future development". Doom 4 is speculated.
Take all this as you will. Some sounds good, other stuff not so much.

Discs will still be the "primary delivery mechanism" for PlayStation 4 games for the "forseeable future".
by Keza MacDonald FEBRUARY 23, 2013
Sony's Jim Ryan has told IGN that Blu-Ray discs will still be the PlayStation 4's dominant delivery mechanism for games, despite a wider move towards a more connected console.
Sony has upped its game in the digital distribution field over the past year or two with the PS3, delivering games to PSN day-and-date with their retail releases (although still at full RRP, which in Europe especially is often far in excess of the price you can expect to pay in a shop.) But although Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president and CEO sees the trend towards digital downloads continuing, he still sees a primarily disc-based future for the console.
"Clearly, and this applies not just to games but to pretty much every form of entertainment, there is a trend to increased digital consumption, and that is happening now on PS3 and will continue and will probably accelerate on PS4," he told IGN. "But the primary delivery mechanism for the big games on the PS4 platform will continue to be Blu-Ray discs, for the foreseeable future."
What counts as the forseeable future? Five years? "That sort of horizon, yes," Ryan agrees. The reasoning behind this is that PS4 games will take up so much space that in many parts of the world, downloading them just won't be realistic. "For our big first-party games, we’ve encouraged the studios to make as much use of the BD50 [50-gigabyte Blu-Ray drive] as they possibly can – some of these things run to like 45 gigs," he says.
"If you go down to Southern Europe, where we have very big and important businesses, it can take you 3 days over a standard internet connection to download a file of the size, and that’s not fun. There are certain gating factors in terms of internet infrastructure that mandate that the disc-based solution is going to be the primary delivery mechanism for the foreseeable future."

Yeah. Until double-digit Mbps speeds become the norm, we won't see the move to digital pass the tipping point.

Soooo I'm a huge PS fan. I'm not 100% sold on the PS4 yet though. looks like too much $$ for such a little upgrade.

Yeah, those FB ads are pretty weird sometimes. I don't think I've ever clicked on one. Not sure how they're making money.

I wonder how much better a game would be if coded for PS4 in 1080 versus PS3 in 1080.... I'm definitely not running out and getting an early piece of HW if I can avoid it, but I'm wondering if I'd even see a huge difference in gaming experience without jumping to 4k on a bigger boob tube.
