Dead Space 3
The Gameplay-
The third person view is back in full force again as it was in Dead Space 2. Many of the classic elements like laser aiming (classic or center), secondary fire mode, and dismemberment were retained. Others were changed or added. Your rolls are now much smoother than they were before in the last rendition. The Most improved and nicest thing I saw and liked was the “resource collection” aspect which is implemented on the “WORKBENCH” They did a really good job of it and really showcases Dead Space 3. You will spend countless hours crafting weapons and going back to rebuild them as you will find you don’t like the way a certain weapon works. The range of your building is pretty intense, just take the time and learn it and get accustomed. You can even share them with your friends so they don’t have to do all the leg work and will have your blueprints! So with these two aspects the merge seamlessly and is a pleasant surprise and addition that enhances your overall experience. The co-op is also a good addition where you get to obtain additional cut scenes and segments of footage that are only available when you play co-op. The drop-in/drop-out implementation is rather nice when You’re in a mission and he has to leave it just checks him out at the last save point then when they come back he comes in at your last save point.
My Bottom line: Amazing additions to the weapon building, which allows you to create crazy creation such as guns that shoot, saw blades etc. The Co-Op is engaging, especially if you have a competent person playing. Sadly, But they missed the mark on the overall combat as it seems very sluggish at times as they went to a more action oriented game.
The Atmosphere-
This game is not scary and that’s due to a couple of things-
The background music just isn’t there to give you that eerie feeling. This series was founded on the “music” that laid the groundwork for the stimulus of the nerves. The music varied from dull, to bland then just absurd in the essence of urbanized tunes.
The second aspect that really took away from the whole Dead Space feeling would be the overly lit areas in the game. If you remember in the first game it was dark, the lights flickered and you thought twice about going into the dark. They really tried to fit a lot into this game and it really shows but I believe they tried too much and not enough polish.
My Bottom line: They missed the mark in this area and took the game into a lighter atmosphere and less horror oriented.
The Story-
The campaign clocks in around 20 hours of solid game play time that is then expanded once you beat it on normal mode. The emotion that the previous Dead Spaces games elicited from the gamers is not present to me. I rarely ever felt sorry for or had any emotions for the NPCs’ that were in the story. I was usually feeling oh ok that was expected…next. The world you are thrown into is engaging as the backdrops will leave your jaw hitting the floor especially when you in the zero gravity areas. The detail in the surrounding environments really lend well to the story.
My Bottom Line-After beating the game on normal you will unlock other features as they introduce many hours of repayable content and thus qualify as a plus. The upsetting part is you will feel as you didn’t get a complete game as they have already announced the DLC for March. This game will be a fun adventure but not sure the risk outweighs the reward.
