How is it affecting you guys?

It looks like the base I am about to leave will cut their flying hour program by 1/3 as well as very limited TDYs etc. Definitely getting more and more real as the days carry on.

For us it's a cut to the R&D programs (targeting new starts), hiring freeze, mission essential training only, and my gut feeling is we are heading for furlough.

So far we're lucky at the Watervliet Arsenal. They have told us that no one will be losing their jobs because we actually make money selling cannons and mortars, but they are talking about hiring freezes and possibly handing out retirement bonuses. So yeah, good luck to us all. I'm sure they will never think to stop buying $20,000 sinks for the bosses and $10,000 parts that we don't need to buy rather than getting rid of good people.

So I just got the official letter from Panetta today indicating the strong and very likely possibility of a furlough. The Military OMA funds (active duty pay) will be exempt so it will only affect the Civvies if it happens. I've now been designated as the PM for my Directorate to help come up with the furlough Plans

Where we work we make the cannons for tanks and howitzers and some of the mortars as well. They said that they where thinking of pulling the rest of the funding for the F-35's and move it over to upgrades on tanks, strictly rumor though.

Considering the investment of the 35, the fact that there is no real air-to-air combat threat out there right now... I see no reason to continue with the 35. It's more or less a waste of time, money, and man power. For all us older air frame guys we are going to have to go through an ass ton of training just to make it happen. Let alone "learn" how to troubleshoot, which will be everyone. Having to deal with engineers just to do simple jobs would be a giant pain in the ass.

Isn't the funding coming through the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corp for this? That'd be a lot of wasted money for 2/3 of those branches.

It's not solely, or I believe even primarily, air to air though, is it?

And that's going to happen at some point anyway, with technology advancements. Unless we freeze military tech now, its going to happen.

Exactly. It's a multirole strike fighter. Sure, its air to air performance is less than that of the F-22, but it's better than that of the F-16, which is what it's replacing, along with some of the A-10, F-16CJ, and F-15E. The fact that one fighter can fulfill all of those roles cuts down on maintenance and training costs and simplifies the supply chain, in addition to replacing the older legacy fighters.

I'd read that it was supposed to replace both the 16 and A-10.

I'm also a little confused now. Isn't the 15 and 22 air superiority, and the 16 and 35 multirole? If that's the case, wouldn't the 22 be the one you think should be cancelled?

Negative. The 22 is replacing the 15C (air superiority), while the 35 replaces, among other things, the 15E

There arent enough c models to justify replacing them plus c models have zero air to ground capabilities. The 35 will obviously be able to do more than a 16 but it cannot compete with a strike eagle as far as payload. The A-10 I can see never getting replaced. It's the workhorse of the AF.

KaNtSt0PMeH
02-24-2013, 11:10
Either way I do not see the 35 happening for awhile... and considering the 22 which has been in development since the early 90s still isn't deployable, I see no reason to push for the 35s.

It can't carry as much, but it can hit targets the 15E can't. The A-10 won't be completely replaced, rather it'll be complemented by the F-35.

Not necessarily the F-35 and F-15 with upgrade mods have the same weapon capabilities. All the weapons we whether it's JDAMs, GPs, CBUs are have different guidance packages which give them different potentials. The 35 is the superior fighter of course but more or less because of its radar, vector abilities, etc. The fact is more and more money getting cut will definitely canx alot of the what if stuff we have going on. Before I left Hill they just cancelled another TDY which was to spin the unit up for a deployment. That was the 3rd in a row. Who knows man, shits getting heavy with less people to do the jobs.

I know as far as what weapons they carry, they can do the same things, but my point was because of the radar, vector abilities, stealth, that's why it can hit targets the Es can't.

Well maybe it's going to be different for each service. The timeline we saw came from the G-4 office in the Pentagon. Now if your wife's group really is starting 22 March I'm really surprised. The reason being is Sequestration starts 1 March. The letter from Panetta that went out says that a minimum of 30 days notice will be given to all affected employees prior to the start of furlough. 22 March start would go against this. It would also have the unions freaking out. Not sure how they are getting around the system like that.

We just got a letter from our Adjutant General (The 2 star general who runs the state's National Guard) saying they may have to furlough all of the federal technicians (full time Guard people who aren't on active duty military orders) for a few hours each pay period. The hot rumor running around is that they'll make is all have every Friday off with no pay. That would suck massive goat balls cause that would basically be a 20% pay cut. Who the hell has 20% of their paycheck left over every month? Fortunately I just got back from a deployment so I've got $ saved, but this is some massive bullshit if it actually happens. This is all speculation as to how it will work out, but I'm going to be pissed off if I lose 20% of my paycheck because these elected fucknuts can't get their shit together.

Ok, from looking at was happening all weekend, by both sides, here is my conspiracy theory, both sides allowed this to happen so they can make the tough cuts and say they had to do it. The Dems are now offering social security nets, GOP is no offering more tax moves on loop holes and defense contract cuts. This way both sides can say: look we had to do it and say sorry to their voters. Just my thoughts on a cold Monday am.

1) furlough IF it happens will depend on the budget. There is some relation to the budget and Sequestration and whatever that is will determine if and for how long we would furlough.

2) the soonest we can start furlough is 23 April (not a day sooner).

It's hit the Marine Corps pretty hard especially the airwing side of the house. We depend on civilian contractors for some of the programs we use and now they are forced on furloughs, and some are even fired because they can't pay them anymore.

Sent from the hell hole called work

I'm a uniformed civilian and there's only 3 of us in my office. All 3 of us are being furloughed so our office will be empty one day a week. All it does is hurt the troops in the field.

I havnt been able to read what the rest of yall said but since I'm the only air traffic controller here I assume im the only one affected in this way....sequestraion.....well here is our story
In Apr the contract program at the faa was told they will cut 200 small airports out of there program across the country. Im currently working at one of them. We got termination letter dated to may. A week or so later we were told that they were postponing the closure until jun. Again a week b4 closure we were advised we are staing open till Sept 31...
Nontheless I have a health sustain for the gov and how we are being treated. As of now we are still open and as controllers we are still supposed to be profession and treat every air craft professionally. Even with the thought of us being expendable.

That's how its affecting me.....

I really feel for all yous getting hit with the Furlough bat. As a Shipyard worker I was blessed to get lucky and be considered among the necessary. I just wish that the government and others could see that we are all necessary.
It probably doesn't make a difference but how bout those making the decisions take some time off, loose money, and find cuts in areas that truly are not necessary.
Good luck to all. I wish you and your family's good health and godspeed.

Yea that's a subject that comes up at work a LOT. That and why aren't we cutting the SETA support instead. My house is getting a double whammy as we have two in my household that work for the Army and are being Furloughed. But luckily we have 3 incomes so we should pull through fine. The BRAC we went through two years ago actually helped us a bit.

What is really going to suck is that most don't understand that this isn't just through the end of the fiscal year... We were briefed that it's actually a 9 year furlough unless Congress and the cronies on the hill can get their shit squared away. That was new to me. I thought it was only going to be through the end of the fiscal... But that is just the best case scenario.

We were actually thinking RIFs were in the near future. My partner is telling me to not do my job as well to show them the furlough is the reason we can't get our jobs done. I'm thinking yea sure and then are we showing them that we are the weak link that needs to be cut for RIF? Fuck that. I like a challenge at work.

Regardless of how well you do your job, there's someone out there that depends on you just being there. If you're not, then things don't get done until the next day. At some point there will be a backlog and that's what they'll notice. It will affect everyone, down to the lowest ranking Private. We haven't had a real budget in years, hopefully they realize what they're doing and hash this out for everyone's sake.

Exactly. Everyday where I work, they pound home to us that the bottom line our job is to support the Warfighter. Everything we do in fact. It's humbling and a bit stressful because we want to make sure we get things right. Without the proper budget and backing and all the fucking games congress plays it makes it very difficult. We are R&D so we don't have a lot of active duty except the Mil Dep and the guys in out SATCOM Division. We were told to keep operations open 24/7 so we really shouldn't have too bad of lag. The PMs tho are shutting down completely 1 day a week. My biggest customer is taking off every Friday so that's why I picked Friday to coordinate with them.

Yep, my (she thinks she's) my better half, reports. The MEF HQ is contemplating a move from Lejeune to Virginia. The Base will be reducing it's size (man/woman power) by 24%. And to top it all off... The Air Force is taking shorter flights to Afghanistan to save money...

1. Write your resume.
2. Make copies of.... Every freaking thing.
3. Get ready to move.
4. Make an impact, NOW, and keep yourself important.

Two articles to digest. BRAC is back at it with new recommendations (bases, PX, and commissaries stand by). More active duty cuts in the mix in the second article. If it does effect/affect you, just keep your powder dry until the voting booths are open.

The last thing I got at work was to show up Tuesday(I don't work Mondays) and see if there is anyone there to hand out our furlough papers. I think they're going to extend the deadline at least 30 days though.

Two articles. They are a bit behind the power curve, but worth a read if you are a mushroom.

Top article is for Veterans. Compensation is good until the end of the month... then ... You are on your own. Unless things change.
Second article is about the Active duty members. Your pay is safe for the FY, but civilian workers for the DOD is not... it is a case by case basis. Some base facilities are going to be closed. PX open... Commissary closed.... and on and on.

Well some others like me have gotten lucky and got moved to the exempt list thanks to Secretary Hagel (sp?). Or that we all get lucky and get any furloughed days payed anyways cause then it will be free a free extended vacation.

To all the duel status technicians, check your LES's. We didn't acrue leave last pay period because we went over 80 hours of leave without pay in '13. Another kick in the pants.

No problem. This may also cause us to acrue less leave next year, hopefully not though.

I was told it goes in 80 hr increments. So if you hit another 80 hrs by the end of the year you'll lose it again, but on the positive side it also resets Jan 1 so you get to start fresh at the beginning of the leave year.

The weekly furlough days are supposedly starting again in January.

Now that they've determined that we fall under the pay the military act, shouldn't that go away for military?

Not only will we most likely see furloughs. But the DoD had said that RIFs are not off the table. Which sounds like a nice way of saying I probably won't have a job next year.

Just when you thought I would just go away posting this crap.... How did this old F@#$ end up in a gaming forum?

Have a great holiday season... because ... Sequestration is back for next year (like you haven't heard that already).
The recent article shows the GOP (Republican type) are trying to alleviate some of the hurt for the DOD...
My opinion not a chance in this split political nightmare. I think we got hit with 37 Billion before. Mid January is scheduled for a 50 Billion cut.
