Well you buy a plex with 500- 600 mil ISK and it is a 30 day pass to continue playing. People buy them with real money then sell them in game. That's how some new people get so much money fast. I have spent Isk on them , but right now I am using my annual subscription I got as a gift.

If you can continuously make enough Isk you can play the game for free. Many pilots do that. I could do that I guess, I spent almost half my savings to buy a Charon freighter so I am saving up again.

I haven't heard of getting them from rats directly, I know some people scan ships in hopes of ganking an idiot who carries plex in ships.

The latter. Doing lvl 4 missions and selling salvage. Mission isk + bounty isk + salvage isk can make you some coin. Do it enough and you can play the game for free.

As in DED complexes. That is the term you are hearing. You just kill rats, and earn ISK.
