i'm up to treasure hunter - rank 9 now and i'll keep logging here as i progress
the post that follows will point you in the right direction if you are lost on where to go. From my experience, the most difficult part of these things is just finding the general location so i'll point you there without taking from the fun of actually location them.
If you have not yet gotten the first treasure map, to obtain it you need to save a treasure hunter. They are located randomly and will call out for help when you ride by. After saving one they will give you the first map and run away. After this each following map will be found along with the treasure on the previous map.
***possible spoilers to follow***

***You need to have access to Mexico before continuing on with treasure hunting (complete assault on Fort Mercer)***
Treasure 4

***after this treasure all stagecoach travels will be free of charge***

.....and if you really are having a tough time finding stuff, you can go HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnH905VBB-E) and watch this youtube video but i think it's more fun to find them on your own :D

Finished all the treasures so they are now added to the second post. There is also a stranger mission called Aztec gold that sends you on a treasure hunt but it doesn't really even require assistance, just pull up your map and go to the purple circle to find the next step in the mission, pretty easy stuff for advanced treasure hunters such as ourselves :D

man I have been looking for that first treasure all over at every rock around Hanging rock but I never found it I never had thought it was up right next to the big rock
it is,
from the fork, go straight north into the large rock, and you'll get a prompt to inspect the recess. :o

Note: for the first map, you dont have to save the treasure hunter, mine got shot by the bandits before i managed to kill them, and i got the map off of the hunters body.
