That's all it usually is. I was there from 1988-89, and we dealt with the same stuff all of the time (though you didn't hear about it in the states as much).

The only thing im majorly concerned is the end of the non-agression pact that North Korea supposedly ended. If war kicks off, then im all game for it. Another deployment patch for me and actual combat pay lol

Yeah they been doing this every 5 yrs since I can remember, the ROK's can take care of themselves now, plus our air power would wreak their already bad supply train, China only sticks their noses in it because they don't want the North Korean people to jump into china, heck they eat their dead in some parts of NK due to food shortages, When you look at Google earth at night NK has like 1 area at night with light their capital. It will be interesting to see I do think they will test the new ROK pres since its the first women President.

The funny part is China was top signer of the armistice like we were for the UN side. That means the armistice can not be stop be the 2nd signers North and South Korea, so the whole thing is just to make them look strong to his people. Also read a very some interesting stuff on North Korea after the Sovit went down China now provide all fuel for the North and they regulate it so North Korea only get enough to keep its almost not existent economy going. The experts say they have enough fuel in reserve to maybe move their whole military for 1 to 2 weeks. China has approve and ship them fuel for any big military exercises they are doing.

North Korea (and Iran) are just China's puppets.... Anything they do is to tie up our assests as directed by the Chinese.
I agree with Toby, the ROK can take care of themselves. When I was there, You just gave the ROK Marines a moon pie and they would do anything.
On another thought, I may be responsible for the NK getting angry with the US. While on an operation near the DMZ (some years ago) I stood on the hood of my M-151 Jeep, hicked up the blouses on my cammies, turned on a boom box to Ah Ha (Take On Me) and did the Peewee Herman big shoe dance for the NK border guards..... I of course wrapped it up with displaying my own MOON pie to them.
I hope the statute of limitations protects me.... <--- (true story)

It was 85 or 86.... Arrived on the USS StLouis... Actually did 'wet net' disembarking. (Nothing like re-living WWII).
I was with the 3rd MARDIV assigned to 12 Marines to provide a MUX shot with a MRC-135.
(I am sure (being a Comm Tech) you know all about the abbreviations.)
We had those Shitty...ooops can I say that here? Those Crappy AS-2236 antennas (flyswatters). Being they were line of sight, the only location we could get the comm in was on a hill near the border. We had the ROK Marines proving security and the North Koreans watching every move. So it was a great time to show our collective Asses to them.

I was there with the MAU but I think by then they changed us to a MEU 86 I think, was on the LST Perioa ready to burn as many North Koreans with my soldering iron, combat crypto tech REMF that I was, Yeah wet landing was on the Charleston for a Med float going over the side on nets and getting your legs slammed when the waves would slam the mic boats up.

Dude there's so much propaganda right now you can't even turn on the TV with out a news anchor basically lunging through the tv grabbing you yelling "Theyre gonna kill us all" and then runs in circles around your bedroom while you lay there dazed and confused. It's getting much now. Like come on world. North Korean military as a whole is about just as equipped as the iraqis when we invaded. Outdated soviet technology, pitiful training, and not to mention not a damn one of them has ever fired a bullet at another person in a firefight. The nukes they have can be taken out in matters of minutes, the only thing were scared of though is an unprovoked act of war against them say if we took the nukes now would be them turning to the chinese for aggression and retaliation not to mention it would risks the south korean and americans on the penninsula. The second they attempt to cross the DMZ or launch an armed rockect anywhere along the pacific buh bye.. The north koreanside of the border would be straight charred earth. If not by nukes by strategic air superiority.

North Korea is out of food. Simple as that. They do this about every 2-3 years. They sink fire on a South Korean ship, shoot across the DMZ, or they fire a "test" missile over Japan. I don't think anyone has ever actually been hurt, perhaps you folks closer to the action know more, but I can tell you that there is no way they attack South Korea. Likewise, we are not eager to get involved in a war with North Korea. If North Korea decided to attack, their artillery would level Seoul. There wouldn't be anything anyone could do about it. Pyongyang would be in a similar boat with retaliatory fire. The civilian casualties in such a war would be horrendous and as such, war is incredibly unlikely.

Still, if it did happen, most of our staging would be off of the peninsula in Japan or via ship. Biggest thing is that it would be a hybrid war and we haven't utilized conventional tactics in over 10 years. Someone mentioned that North Korea is not well trained, but they and South Korea have been training for a conventional war since the Armistice began after the Korean War. Their resources are not good, but there training is likely another story.

In the end, we are the best trained in the world because we are the most current due to Iraq and Afghanistan, and we have air superiority and excellent force projection on our side. As such, North Korea is the least of my worries. China, however, is a different story. They don't want us right on their border and entered the war last time for that very reason. I'm sure China is as much the reason there has not been a war as we are. Economically, China is benefitting greatly from the status quo.

Bottom Line: Unification is far more likely to happen at some point than war is.

As much money as China has invested in the US, I don't see them taking any action, or even caring that much. If N. Korea initiates. The world has changed a lot in the last 60 years.

They'll take action, but it probably wouldn't be in the way N. Korea wants. I see China and US entering into talks to decide the fate of the peninsula to be honest. China's economy is as reliant on us as we are.

Exactly. I can see N.K.'s leadership doing something asinine to start a war, but they'll get stomped as a result of a short-ass conflict. Best case I see a Berlin Wall or Hong Kong type result with China and the US hamnering out the fate of the peninsula.

Such a mess and so many politics involved. If war occurred and North Korea was decimated, then what? China and U.S. would support unification but under what government? I doubt also that China would stand by and let the U.S. continue to be such an ally to the Koreas without having their own input as well. What of U.S. bases in the peninsula? How would a base near China's border be regarded.

The aftermath of conflict would be far muddier than the conflict itself.

If this turn into a full clash US comm takes over all NATO forces in SK but would the ROK's listen? they are sick of being threatened by NK. If it comes to blows I think China would step in and take over the north putting a controlled Government in to keep the buffer zone.

It is very possible. The key is that the US and China will coordinate with each other in order to prevent being sucked into a battle between each other once again.
