Good god ..how i hate apple.... but i need to ask cause i just bought a Mac for my daughter(birthday pres) and a Mac Pro for my wife(school).... i warned them both that i now nothing about iOS.. so i figure i need to bone up on some material . do we have any people here that are apple savy? what are the biggest probs they run in to.. is it true you dont need anti virus... what other things might i need to read up on?

now i have to confess i have messed with apple back in the day of 1st Gen Ipod and 1st Gen Iphone..
dont get me wrong ..great hardware just hated itunes and sold them to get something else... still rocking my AAFES Limited edition Master Chief Halo3 Zune 30gb!! HELL YEAH!!! since 07..

i knew this day was coming... both just had to have a iphone... and then my wife found a steal on a ipad 3 ... i was waiting for the house computer to take a crap .. and wouldn't yeah know... poof... the motherboard crapped out.. cheap ass emachine

guess that means later this year i will have to go and build another computer... MWAHAHAHAHA.. build my dream gaming rig.. already have it narrowed down to two different case's

I'm not that savvy but I am considered an Apple whore. I have had my MacBook both with and without AntiVirus and I can honestly say that it runs better once I removed the AV software from my hard drive.

first off, do not believe this propaganda. it is no secret MACS CAN AND DO GET VIRUSES!, contrary to what they want you to believe. They get less than a PC, yes but that is not because they are some incredible machine with impregnable defenses. Think like a hacker (or any other asshole who's goal is to mess people's stuff up for personal gain and/or amusement) and you'll understand. Windows is the most popular and widely used OS, no doubts there. So naturally the user base (think "victim pool") is going to be much larger for a potential virus. Why do more Honda Civics get stolen every year than Ferraris? Because there are a whole lot more honda civics floating around out there for thieves to steal. Don't read too far into that now lol, I'm not saying a Mac is a Ferrari compared to a PC civic. Maybe that was a poor example, let's try video game references :) So you've decided you've had a lousy day and a bit of trolling would be just the thing to brighten your mood. Where are you going to troll, on a massively popular game with a giant user base at any given time like say... Call of Duty on the Xbox 360? Or would you think no, i'll go trolling in The Conduit on Wii? The easy targets are where the masses are and this is the way viruses are going to work too. Point being, I hate when people claim Macs don't get viruses because believe me, I know from personal experience that they can. After getting things under control with the MacBook i installed Sophos and things went smoothly for a few more months until the thing died completely and replacement parts were more expensive than buying a new laptop

I think Ironhide is a Mac guy and would have some more info for you. If i recall he was the one who suggested Sophos to me in the first place

oh one more rant with apple: Be wary of the "Geniuses" aka tech support in the Apple stores. Maybe I just had a bad experience with them and normally they aren't so bad but i walked out of that store with zero problems solved and extremely annoyed at the arrogance and incompetence of the whole lot of them.

I don't like walking into a place blind, I went in with a problem with a laptop battery but i did my homework first. There is a little button on the bottom of the battery that you could push and green lights would come on indicating the charge level, so i checked that and all lights come on yet the computer turns off immediately when a/c power if removed. From that i figure either the indicators are not working right and something internal is going on with the battery, or the connection on the laptop itself is at fault. Looked around online to see if anyone else had any similar problems and a few said it was a bad battery that was recalled and the apple store could replace. Very well, worth a shot so i drive an hour to get to the nearest one. Someone comes up with the usual greetings and I say i have an issue i'd like to work on with the battery on the laptop. Very well, I'll send someone to you right away. 10 minutes later a "genius" comes and asks what the situation is and I start explaining but he interrupts me literally after i say the word battery and asks to see the battery, flips it over, presses the button, sees the lights come on and says "yeah the battery is good, see the lights?" I say no, it's not good because the computer does not turn on unless ac power is connected. I wanted to just do some quick troubleshooting to know for sure where the issue was. I suggested we do two thiings: put a different battery in this laptop, and put this battery in a different laptop. troubleshooting 101, try to move the problem. Nope, no can do, we'll need to schedule an appointment with a genius over at the genius bar. He points back at the wall of desks with a bunch of "Geniuses", some helping customers, some sitting on their asses probably browsing youtube or facebook. Ok fine, let's go talk to one. let's see, we have an available appointment.....two weeks from tuesday, does that work for you? wtf? Give me 5 minutes and i'll do the testing myself while you run the numbers to see if this particular model had a battery recall. I'm not waiting two weeks to have the honor of your genius doing what we should already be doing now. I drove here now, there is time now, let's do this now. I was so annoyed with this experience that I left and never came back, told my sister to just leave it plugged in if she wants to use her laptop lol

Intel macs can get viruses but it rarely happens. I have kaspersky on our work macs

I have worked with macs for years. I have done quite a bit with them . They take a lot less maintenance than PC's. But in prefer PC and the ability to open the unit and change parts . I can on macs but I need a glass handle and sometimes hex tools.

i just had a signal warrant officer come in my office the other day and asked why i had 5 paperclips hanging on my sticky board stretched out...
i thought he was joking at first and then realized he wasnt... i was like "that there is the million dollar computer tool... it gets cds out of computers when nothing else will ... you know MAGIC...." i had to end up showing him.. he must have felt like a dumbass cause he didnt say a word and left my office..

Yeah. My favorite is always when my friends with Macs have problems come to me. I usually refer them away with some comment about non standard components or some total BS. Except when they try to plug a USB printer into a network port. That"s funny.

...and it's also becoming a bigger pain in the ass to fix them, my HD finally went in my five year old iMac, only problem I've ever had. Ended up getting an external and restored from my backup. But now due to my research and needs for certain software I'm going to a PC. However big of a pain in the ass they are.

I've been training my subordinate for a while and this is one thing I've emphasized to him, even though Industrial Automation standards can often be obscure and/or closed. Even then, the wealth of information out there at your disposal with tools like Google.... It's pretty amazing. Unfortunately, he doesn't listen and I'm really tired of doing IRL LMGTFY. It's pretty amazing what's out there in forums too.

And those "Geniuses".... Had one living above us when we lived in Wicker Park in the city. Complete hipster douchebag.... Had his hipsterdouche Genius buddies over all the time, they were seriously the worst people on Earth. Tried to engage in a technical discussion with him once. He thought he knew everything, but he was wrong and mistaken about so much stuff, and maintained his arrogance when corrected.... I'd rather talk to someone who knows they don't know much, as opposed to someone who doesn't know squat but thinks they're an expert.

I seriously have no idea why or how his stupid bicycle got turned into a pretzel....

Yeah I was 19D I always ended up in Intel Communications or security when I got deployed. The Intel was like being a cav scout but without armor support.

I have mastered Google. But I am also the type to at least try a few ideas. I have a new guy I've been trying to reach and he just takes away the computer and put in the store room says it doesn't work it's usually a simple as RAM or a CD Drive isn't working

Apple support is a joke. I've never had anyone of them be of any use to me other than just replacing the whole machine. :) The best place to find help are the Apple Support Communities. I've found the answer to any problem I have ever found there.

As far as usability goes, I believe you will find the Mac easier to use than the PC. And, they are much easier to add peripherals to.

MACS work great and dont need as much maintenance but the cost and database support stop our schools from staying all mac. I don't like the mini servers either, I miss my x serv with swappable drives

If your tech specs meet the requirements (iMac = Mid 2007 or newer) to run Mountain Lion you will download it directly from the store, however you need to have the latest version of Lion or Snow Leopard installed first in order to upgrade to Mountain Lion
