So its getting to that point again, the choice of new systems. While in the past, I have had a PS-PS3 and Xbox-Xbox360, Gamecube-Wii. So I consider myself unbias on the fanboy stuff. I will be going with the system that fits my needs as a gamer. I'm worried that the Xbox Infinity is going to be to family entertainment and not enough gaming. Yes there will be big budget games but from what I'm hearing from tons of sources is that microsoft isn't giving developers the support and tools they are needing/requesting to make those truely unique games. PS4 seems to be at the ready to go all out to give developers and gamers what they want and need without any issues. We will be hearing details about Xbox Infinity in 10 days and I can truely start to make a choice on which one I'm going to be getting, but as of now I am leaving towards the PS4. Things could change in the future..

As always I want to hear all your opinions on this matter, just before you type anything step back and look at the overall picture with an unbias viewpoint ( try not to start fan boy arguements ). I really just want to get a feel for what people are thinking.

for me its the same, both offer quite a bit, I am leaning toward Xbox, mainly cause of ease of use and more usable bells and whistles. I can order and download games from my pc and the xbox will download it. I have an autistic boy who loves Kinect gaming nights. I wasnt too impressed with PS4's and they still want to color code sensor the controller like the move system I feel failed me. there new camera may be better in the future.

Also which developers matters because we all play some different titles. I always like Halo and Gears. I really hope Microsoft goes with the Blue ray this time around.

Pretty much all the main game developers you can think of for xbox have been push out of their titles and their games given to other companies which microsoft controls. Like halo's 343 studios..... So xbox seems to have lost all their console exclusive titles....

As a person who has owned both sides PS/Xbox I have always tended to lean toward PS when it launches but always end up with Xbox as my hardcore system. Though the graphics aren't as good I have always liked Xbox's controller over PS and Live even though I have to pay for it. I am hopeful that in 9 days I will hear some stuff that makes me make my decision. I really don't want to buy both systems this time round since I have 2 boy gamers who always want what Dad has. So I am eventually going to have to buy one for them as well. At this point I can't say what I am going to do but I am already leaning 60/40 in favor for Xbox without hearing details yet.

I see that as a good thing, some xbox games lacked some video quality PS3 had. I think as the fall gets closer we will see if xbox even has any exclusives left, having family in the Xbox support and psychological teams helps me get some things cheaper too. they tried getting me one of those kinect choppers free, but couldnt.

I haven't heard anything about the new Xbox not being good for games, or of devs not getting the necessary tools. I think Halo will probably stay Xbox-exclusive. I don't see any real disadvantages for the new Xbox until we actually see the reveal.

Who wants to punch the guy with the leather jacket in the face more than me! Lol For real it brought back a lot of memories regarding launch lineups and I agree Sony has always won in that regard but also flopped as well. Remember Heavy Rain was the big game they were using to show off the capabilities of the PS3 and it was supposed to be the big launch title. Yea they ended up not releasing it until 2010.

How have they lost exclusives and forced developers out of their games? Bungie wanted to move on to new games, so MS formed 343 with core Bungie personnel, added to them, and made a massively successful entry in to a brand new trilogy. That was, last i checked, exclusive to MS. Hell, MS still owns minority interest in Bungie. And has owned the Halo IP outright for years now.

Might want to double-check whatever gave you that story, cause it sounds like a Sony fanboy daydream.

I can see where Microsoft is going to be the family friendly among system. I have owned both since launch and with all new consoles at launch tree are growing pains and lack of software. If I ad to decide right now it would be PS4, however I'm waiting to see what Microsoft has up their sleeves. Another big decision will be price point, there is no way I can affor to brand new consoles at launch especially with the way the costs have risen over the years.

both current systems allow for add on hard drives, Microsoft with their exclusive XBOX360 drives and Sony with standard laptop hard drives and both systems allowing USB drive support. This will no doubt continue into the next console generation. Or are you wanting upgradable RAM and graphics cards? That unfortunately is not something I see coming any time soon because it takes the simplicity out of consoles, which is a large selling feature for many users. Basically, with a computer you have to check that your specs meet or exceed the requirements for each game or it will not run properly. Not with a console though, if the game says it's for the console you have, it works. period. no wondering if your console is going to have enough power to run it at full specs, and developers also don't need to worry about making it work with various settings either.

Not that there is anything wrong with games having different requirements to achieve various levels of quality, it's just something we typically only see in the PC division due to the high level of customization available in a PC. There have been a few exceptions, like the N64's RAM upgrade but few games came out that supported it and even fewer that required it. Only reason I had one was because Nintendo bundled it with Donkey Kong 64, and it was the only game I had that used it. Overall I think they probably found it was not an overly successful (profitable) venture that created more questions than dollars

I not going to get any of them.

At least while they're brand new.

I'll probably end up waiting till my old Xbox blows up or until I really want to get the new one.

Plus, I just bought the one I have now, so buying another one within a years time is not something I plan on doing.

That said, I'm leaning more towards MS simply because it won for me the last gen. There would have to be some serious issues for me to switch.

you are right I thouhgt I lost some of my gamer score at some time,

Gamerscore The Gamerscore (G) is an achievements (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achievement_%28video_gaming%29) system that measures the number of Achievement points accumulated by a user with a LIVE profile. These Achievement points are awarded for the completion of game-specific challenges, such as beating a level (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_%28computer_and_video_games%29) or amassing a specified number of wins against other players in online matches.
Initially, retail Xbox 360 games offered up to 1,000G spread over a variable number of Achievements, while each Xbox Live Arcade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live_Arcade) title contained 12 Achievements totaling 200G. On February 1, 2007, Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft) announced on their Gamerscore Blog some new policies that developers must follow related to Gamerscore and Achievements in future releases.[34] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live#cite_note-34) All regular disc-based games must have 1,000 Gamerscore points in the base game; the title can ship with fewer than 1,000 points, but anything added later must be free. Game developers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_developer) also now have the option of adding up to 250 points via downloadable content every quarter after the first year of release (for a total of 1,750 points). Xbox Live Arcade titles must have 200 Gamerscore and may add up to 50 points via downloadable content (for a total of 250 points).[35] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live#cite_note-35)
On May 26, 2007, Halo 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_2) was the first Games for Windows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_for_Windows) title to feature Achievements, which counted towards a player's Gamerscore.
On March 25, 2008, Microsoft cracked down on "Gamerscore cheaters" (those who used external tools to artificially inflate their Gamerscore), and reduced their Gamerscores to zero without the option to recover the scores that had been "earned", and branded the player by denoting on their Gamertag that they were a "Cheater".[36] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live#cite_note-36)
The development of the Gamerscore system has created a new niche in the internet economy. Many websites have been created to provide gamers with tips and tricks for getting achievement points. Some sites are solely devoted to these achievement guides, and some blogs provide gaming guides in addition to their other content.

There were no achievements on the old Box. It offers a lot to me because I enjoy completing things... it's fun. If they do not roll over I will flip shit. It should just be a continuation of it. Considering how much is invested in the achievement system I don't see why they wouldn't.

This. I'll lose my fucking shit if they don't roll over. I spent MANY hours accumulating a pretty decent GamerScore. I whored every game for a long time, I'd hate to see it all thrown away...

Thats how I feel about it, I don't worry about hitting the achievements but it is nice when I get one. For all of the achievement whores out there I don't see why they wouldn't transfer the gamer tag and score over to the next system, but keep in mind that there will more than likely be no backwards compatibility so if you don't get everything in a 360 title you probably never will after it transfers....unless they have a real time updating system that links across both platforms....guess we will find out on the 21st....or at E3

I'd disagree, and based on more recent rumors there should be some, if not 100% backwards compatibility.

And come to think of it, one of the "selling points" of the Windows phones was the ability to link your account and increase your gamerscore. Likewise with the tablet.

Looking forward a bit more to next week. Scheduled the recording on the dvr, and I might need to set up my dvr app to watch it at work.

The problem with the backwards compatibility is there is new chip set architecture being used in both the "720" and the PS4, Sony has already said that you will not be able to play PS3 games on it. Yeah, the 360 had partial. And it'd definitely be cool.....at least for a couple months. Then it won't be much more than novelty. I was just bringing up some of the most recent rumors.

I'm curious though, when backwards compatibility became so important and 'must-have'.

For me it was a game changer from PS2 to 3. Yes you could buy the backwards compatible one but they are quite a bit more expensive. It just made sense with my PS2 that I was able to experience the amazingness of my whole PlayStation 1 collection when I wanted. It will definitely help justify the amount of money millions of people everywhere have put into their collections so they don't have to hook up a 360 to play 360 games they can just keep rolling with the "720"

They wouldn't get rid of the GS system, just hypothetically reset scores on the 720.

As long as there was a halfway justifiable reason I'd be okay with it. Its not like the achievement whores wouldn't continue to whore. There would even be incentive to do so now, thanks to the reward system.

Are you referring to "MyAchievements"?

Resetting them specifically on the new system would benefit them more than not, since the only achievement based rewards are 1% and 2% off marketplace purchases. And that's at 25k, tops.

But yeah, completely resetting the account would be dumb. I think I was looking at something more like the annual reset you get in games like Battlefield or CoD.

I will keep my 360 that wouldn't be the issue. It's just the space it takes up and some TVs are only capable of supporting one system at a time. I would rather have one system that I could continually play rather than go back and forth.

Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Chief of Staff Aaron Greenberg recently stopped by the Major Nelson podcast to discuss next week's Xbox reveal event and how Microsoft will show its "vision for the future of games."

"We're really going to tell one story across two events. So we're going to start on the 21st and really that's about revealing the next Xbox platform, really our vision for the future of games, the future of entertainment. We definitely have a lot of surprises planned." Greenberg then specifically called out Call of Duty: Ghosts, which will have its next-generation engine demoed during the Microsoft event.

"People are going to get a great inside look at really the making of the new platform and the team that's brought it to life," Greenberg added. "I mean, to be honest it's really about the team, the people here. That's why we're inviting people to campus, we're going to bring them behind the scenes a little bit. We've never done this before and so it's really exciting to be able to do that. But I think it's a lot of laying the foundation - probably the best way to describe it - and then just a couple of weeks later we go to E3."

Greenberg concluded that more will be shown at E3 and after, leading into this holiday season. "E3 is all about the games. At E3, I mean, if you're a gamer, it's going to be tons of exclusives, world premieres and obviously even beyond that we have a lot to share between then and this holiday."

The Xbox event takes place on May 21 at Microsoft's Redmond campus, located in Washington state. Be sure to have your browser locked to Joystiq starting at 1pm ET (6pm GMT, 10am PT) for all of the scoops, commentary and neatly organized words you've come to expect.

Not necessarily. The 360 has cloud storage. So do ipods, ipads, and iphones......pretty much ianything. It's pretty obvious that online is necessary for most of the innovations they highlighted.....because they were internet connectivity based functions. But absolutely no where was it even inferred that it was a requirement.

even though they didn't list them yet, they did tell us 15 exclusive titles (this number does not include 3rd party developers to my knowledge) will come out in the first year, 8 of which are new IPs. So they are there, we'll probably hear about most of them at E3

I guess I'm just kind of surprised both platforms are staying with HDDs only.... How long are they expecting these consoles to last before being replaced by the next gen? Load times f'n blow, and these games will have more data to load than current gen ones, no? I know it would have driven the cost of the console up a bit, but why not at least have an option for a lower capacity SSD driven option on SATA 2 (SATA 3 would be ok too)? Or a smaller SSD to use as a cache? Hopefully SSD will be offered as an option early in the life of these things.

I was under the impression that when consoles were released, they were to be well ahead of current out of the box gaming computers on all critical fronts.... Am I mistaken?

How significant are the costs though these days? SSDs have dropped in price dramatically. I haven't priced out out of the box computers in years to be honest, just thought a console gen which is expected to last quite a long time (a good deal longer than a gaming rig cycle IMO) would at least have an option for it. 500GB HDD (@7200 I'm assuming, is that what speed they're going at in these things? Maybe 10k?) versus e.g. 128GB-256GB SSD, what's the price difference there? And we're not talking the uber fast SSDs either, no need to go top tier, again IMO.

Base model with HDD, ok I can live with that. All I'm asking for is the option for an SSD upgrade. Or if they thrown in a very small SSD for caching, that also could work wonders as hybrid. I still need to look closer at the specs. But I can't stand HDDs for anything other than mass storage since making the switch to SSD.

I mean I know it sounds like I'm just bitching over load times, but playing games on the PC and then going over to the PS3, it sucks after you get used to no load time. Or navigation between members of the GUI.

iamthesgt
05-22-2013, 09:51
500GB 7200rpm drives are around $50-75. 10K drives are more like $150-175. Mid-level SSDs can be had for about $200-300 for 240GB. 500GB of solid state is pretty expensive-about $400-500

Yeah but if you're not using it as a media server, what do you need 500GB of primary storage for unless all your games are 100% DLC? I wouldn't expect the option to be a 480GB or 512GB SSD, what would you need that size of SSD for? If you can connect an external HDD via USB, or have a media server already on your PC, what's the point? If everybody is pushing cloud storage, again, another point against needing a massive hard drive.

I'd be willing to pay the difference. I'd just be shocked if that doesn't end up being an option very early on in the product's life cycle.

And what about hybrids? Middle of the road in pricing and a drastic improvement still..... I just don't get why it would be only HDD.... SSD is mature.

iamthesgt
05-22-2013, 10:07
Hybrids aren't too bad...$50-75 more I think. But I think you do need a good bit of storage, as all games MUST be installed on this Xbox.

I guess I just never have more than a few games at any time for each console I've had.... Like I used to do with my PC, only active games go on SSD, others either get uninstalled or moved to the HDD. Now that I have more SSD storage, I'm a bit lazy and keep games there that will probably never see the light of day again, but at no time have I needed more than 256GB of SSD space for OS and all games I use. Hell I could do with 128GB but I expect these games to be fatter. I know I'm not the norm, but I do know many who are "like me". I sure as hell would, in a second, pony up for an upgrade to a 256GB SSD if given the option to do so for FMV of the difference in hardware.

Maybe hybrid would be the best answer. But SSD prices will be coming down so low during the lives of this gen of consoles that it will make perfect sense at some point very soon....

How long is this gen's life cycle expected to be anyway? Another seven years?

Yeah the pricing model for used games is still not very clear, but there will be fees involved. The switch to blu-ray is not the reason (blu-ray drives can still read regular DVDs, etc), but rather the change in processor architecture, from PowerPC to x86. They require two different function sets and are completely incompatible.
