EA has announced it will discontinue its Online Pass program. "Yes, we're discontinuing Online Pass," EA's senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg told GamesBeat in an e-mail. "None of our new EA titles will include that feature."

Reseburg added that "many players didn't respond to the format," despite EA going on record months after instituting Online Passes, reporting it had not seen a "significant" backlash. "We've listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward."

The Online Pass, a one-time use code required for online play, was first introduced in 2010 with the intent of being exclusive to EA Sports games, though it quickly escalated from there. Online Pass revenue generated between $10-$15 million for EA in its first year alone.

About time. That has sucked for me cause I have to buy three copies of EA games to support the online habit of the family.

Who else does do online passes? I have only encountered EA off the top of my head, I can't think of any others.

As far as I know they are the only ones that I have seen on consoles, Sony does it on the PS Vita for online content. Its their way of forcing the consumer to pay for the new copy instead of a used if they want to play online. If all you are interested in is the main story and don't play online....save some bucks, we all could use it.

I can't think of anyone else other than EA. a bunch of games popped in my head and they were all by EA.

Yeah I think it's just EA. I think I heard a rumor about Ubisoft doing it, but I don't think they ended up doing it.

Lol, you guys are silly.

Ubisoft has been doing it for years now. Activision has it, as does WB...aka Arkham series. And as was mentioned, Sony.

EA owns a 20 percent stake in Ubisoft which is probably the part that required a Online Pass. Lol

Yay I can finally end my EA boycott and get mass effect 3 and battlefield 3. I know this new policy is not retroactive and I has to get new copies or pay the fee, but I am okay with that, it was the principle of the thing.

Agreed. While I play all games, EA has always held a special place in my heart for all the hate and discontent I had for bad games and shitty customer service.

Yeah, not so much. Pretty sure Uplay came out before EA's online pass also. Tells you how irrelevant Ubisoft is. May also explain why Ubi shits on its NA fanbase so hard.

Both of them suck in my opinion. For the reasons listed and more. EAs servers and Ubisofts lack of care.

Yea I know. I was being sarcastic and making a lame joke. EA owned part of Ubisoft back in 2004 to but sold its shares in 2010. Probably saw how irrelevant Ubisoft is. Lol

While some of this content is purely an ‘online pass’ by definition, much of it also contains actual in-game perks, items, and even story content. Some of these games were a part of EA’s Project Ten Dollar program, which was a precursor to the online pass but functioned in a similar way. What’s most relevant to our community is that the online pass was a deterrent to obtaining achievements in many cases if you purchased the game secondhand and weren’t willing to purchase the additional content.

EA has told Game Informer (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/05/30/several-online-passes-for-ea-games-now-free-on-xbox-live.aspx) that this is just the initial wave of online pass removals. In the coming weeks we’ll see more games added to the list, while other titles may receive an update or hot fix to remove them. EA confirmed that they would be removing the online pass from all their previously released titles.

Okay, this says one of two things.

Either A. Sony will have the exact same verification/authentication bit MS does.

Or B. EA just went exclusive to MS.

I'm gonna be leaning towards A.

Agreed. With all the pressure from publishers on MS, I guarantee the publishers put the same pressure on Sony.
