View Full Version : Can Nintendo survive

As I sit here looking at my Wii U laying dormant on my entertainment center being used solely by my 9 year old daughter to play Lego City I can't help but wonder if Nintendo can survive the next round of consoles. Being a classically trained 8-bit gamer Nintendo holds a special place in my heart, but with their lack of acceptance that things are going wrong for them I don't see things getting better. I mean I love Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda but how many times can you keep doing the same thing. Where is the innovation that we need, and for the love of all things holy in the gaming universe where is the multiplayer and online capabilities. I mean for the love of gaming they could make a MMO out of Pokémon and the masses would probably go nuts. Well enough of my soap box...what are your thoughts.

My opinion for the hardcore gamer they are DONE SON! I think their is still a likeness in the younger market i.e. less than 10 but how far can that take you. I personally don't want to shell out that much money for something my younger kids wont want after a few years. Even then the Wii was extremely popular with my boys a few years ago until they saw Dad playing his 360 then they want to emulate what Dads doing. So unless they make some drastic changes I think they will soon be done completely.

Nintendo will eventually do what Sega did if they wish to continue making money and become a developer for the other consoles instead of their own bullshit.

Heck yea. I would buy a Zelda game for the Xbox

Don't think they went far enough to make the WiiU "next gen" but the bigger problem is getting other game studios on board. Without a consumer base I don't see that happening.

Yeah I think they might be able to pull a SEGA. But I agree no serious gamer uses them. The Wii was great for families. But the Wii U just kinda falls flat.

Is it just me or do they come across as not caring about the gamer. I mean you are a business that is acting like the customer is nonexistent

I don't think it's do much that as a failure to adapt. They were the earliest of the big 3 (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) in gaming and they were largely successful. But they refused to change, and they are falling behind.

Agreed. IMO, they should stick to handhelds as well. They've always been good at that. Of course, they have serious competition in that arena with smart phones, tablets, and whatnot.

Those don't scare Nintendo yet. They can't compete with Pokemon/Yugi/leaf/Mario yet. Two different markets.

Agreed. Smart phone / tablet et. al. games have their entertainment value, but seemingly only short term. I have yet to see such a game on those outlets that is as engrossing as say a console or PC adventure game.

I give Nintendo another 5 years TOPS. I can see them making someting for handhelds for a long time, but after this next gen comes out, and all these tablets and phones... Lets just hope they sell out to sony so I can play some sick ass Mario with PS4 graphics.

More likely they'll go independant and sell to both.

Yeah. Once they come around, they won't risk selling into one ecosystem. I highly doubt they'd ever come to PC though.

I don't think they would go to one exclusively, they would be shooting themselves in the foot (again), they would lose a lot of revenue not selling to both. As far as handhelds go they don't have much competition, I love my Vita, but Sony can't match their numbers

A little follow-up on this discussion. I'd say Mr. Iwata is definitely not wrong in his assessment:
"The only solution is to provide the mass-market with a number of quality software titles."
by Luke Karmali AUGUST 12, 2013
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has admitted that the lack of games available for the Wii U is the key factor behind poor sales.
In an interview with CVG, Iwata dismissed the notion that price was what had stalled sales of the console, instead saying it was down to notable Nintendo titles being absent.
"If the price is actually an issue [with Wii U], then there is some contradiction between the current sales balance between the Basic and Premium versions of the Wii U," he said.
"The basic version should have sold a lot, but the fact of the matter is that people are buying more of the premium version. So the issue is not there.
"I understand that the real issue is the lack of software, and the only solution is to provide the mass-market with a number of quality software titles."
Nintendo's financials for the last quarter revealed the company sold just 160,000 Wii U units worldwide in three months. What do you think, would a better line-up of titles have helped the troubled console, and do you think it's too late for Nintendo to turn it around? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Most definitely! You can't dangle titles in the face of the consumer, they ave to be there. For example my wife wanted Pikmin 3 since it was first uttered way back when, she just got it last week. While there are many coming, they need some new innovative IPs, not merely their core franchises

The big N is moving one step closer...can't say I didn't see this coming. Nintendo has slashed the price of its deluxe version of the Wii U to $299, Nintendo announced. The deluxe version, featuring a 32 GB hard drive, will now match the same price as its basic version, 8 GB hard drive counterpart.

So it stands to reason that the basic model "should" be slashed as well, no?

You would think so. Why would anyone pay the same price for something that is less capable

I can see them slashing the price or merely ceasing production of the lesser model all together, it hasn't sold well

They'll probably cease production of the lesser one at all. That's what the 360 did every time a new (bigger) model was announced.

Yes and no. They still maintain 3-4 bundles. They just discontinue after console redesigns.

The problem is handheld isn't enough to support failing console.
I think MS should just buy them out altogether. That'd be awesome, if implausible.

They seem to be able to survive locally, and we all know that the DS is the only thing keeping them afloat. The just released the Dreamcast of this generation...except the Dreamcast was exceptional, merely a dying breath

I don't see them being around for the long haul.... I would venture to say that in the future they will be bought out by one of the two GIANTS and absorbed into there company... They would be a great company to have so your profile is stronger for dominance but as a stand alone company I think they are almost done..... IMHO

Yea that's who I think will end up with them, they are more on the "Mario" side of things. I think they would benefit and make it real hard for XBOX to dominate after that... I am an XBOX guy but if SONY adds there Sony only titles and add the Mario Franchise to it... They would be a power house.... So we will just have to hide and watch to see who if anyone makes that move!!

I don't see anyone buying out Nintendo, especially Sony. They're worth a lot more than people think. I do see some sort of partnership in their future though. It would be a great way for Apple to break into the console game.

TrillVilleN1
07-07-2014, 08:19
I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. Nintendo has their own turf. Microsoft and Sony go for the hardcore gamers, while Nintendo goes for the kids, soccer moms, and old people. Maybe in 10-15 years they will go the software-only route, but for the next few console generations, I still see them in the hardware business.

The problem is they have reported an annual loss for three years now and have been in the red for the last 3 quarters as well. A company can only go on for so long with reporting an operating loss in the $450M range before drastic measures need to occur.

I think their mistake this time around was the name of their console and their marketing. I literally didn't know the the Wii U was coming out until like a week before it did. I also feel that the name is too similar to the previous one. Nintendo is known for coming out with different versions of the same console. The average customer didn't know that the Wii U was a brand new console and not just a minor update to the Wii.
They had similar loses with the Game Cube. They completely turned it around with the Wii though. I believe that their next console will be successful. They just fucked it up with the Wii U.

Except their turf is decreasing as MS and Sony both have been adding support to that niche. Unless their next console is a knockout that can immediately contend with PS or Xbox, it'll be a lot less than 10 years.

I agree and I can really see them being bought out by Sony and possibly keeping the handheld or some other big software company will buy the rights to it and sell the games on all platforms. The smart route would be to drop the console and keep the handheld then sell their games to the rest of the market. I'd buy them I don't want to but a wii to get them.

I think there best move would be to Pimpout Mario to every platform, no really if they were to do a deal with every platform they could then dump all that money back into the company and get it floating again..... Let's face it The only reason Nintendo makes any money at all is because of the Mario games.

Mario and Zelda.
Let's face it, a new Link/Mario/Smash Bros on xbox or ps would sell huge. They can dump console, focus on handheld and multiplatform, and either be a more successful Sega, or give consoles another shot later down the line.

I will agree to that, I always forget about Zelda, that in itself is a huge draw.... It they were to "Franchise" out just those two pieces they would clean up and be a 3rd in the big console race again!! They could still make there games but just let the others sell them on there consoles. BAM, great business move, IMHO of course......
