So I was up at the ass crack of dawn for the third straight day heading to a doctors appointment and when its early my mind wanders. I started thinking about MREs. My brother in law is coming down and he always asks me to get him some. So I started to think....what's my favorite and least favorite MRE? So I figured why not ask the community as well. These gut grenades are tolerable in short stints...and it beats chewing on my own arm. So get to sharing. Personally I'm a fan of the beef stew...its not bad cold, and most of the time we don't have the time to heat them up. My least favorite would be the omelet....no I haven't tried it and thats the point. Any MRE that has eggs in it petrifies me...can't be good...ever.

I would agree that beef stew is good as well. I also like some if the vegetarian meals.

The worst for me would be either the jambalya (sp?) or the Captain's Chicken (or whatever it was called). Omlet is definitely an all-time fail.

I'm sure they are different now than the first gulf war, but I liked the ham slices the best, if given a choice and avoided the tuna noodle casserole like the plague. I'd rather go hungry than eat that crap. Oh, I hated the chicken ala king too.

I was one of the "Peanut butter for jalapeno cheese, anybody???" guys. Or I'd just take regular cheese spread too.

I don't remember specifically which ones I loved and hated, but I do remember the vegetarian meals had some gems in there. I didn't really eat the entrees too much in the field though, I traded a lot of it away for pound cake or crackers and cheese.

Agreed on all three entrees you listed...particularly the chicken ala king. Gaccckkk!!

Did your unit get any of those sundries packs? The ones that had notepads, envelopes, combs, detergent, cheap sunglasses, peanut M&Ms, etc.? Those things were nice to have, except that all of the M&Ms in them were inedible. They absorbed something from the detergent, making the candies taste like acidic soap. :(

Nope. Never did get any of those. But, since we were in the UAE we did have a beer ration. Two per day. Had to sign for them and drink them right there. Since I worked the 6p to 6a shift in the command post I was drinking mine while most others were picking up their "breakfast" MRE's.

That's the Maricopa county jail, the warden was the county sheriff and his name is joe arapaho or something along those lines. He also made the prisoners wear hot pink coveralls so they stand out in the desert. His idea was awesome, when I was stationed in Yuma we were doing desert convoy excersizes and drove past on of the camps, nothing more enjoyable than seeing my tax dollars being put to good use.

Found this on Military.com:

New MRE Lineup Introduced
by Mike Hoffman on August 2, 2013

Sorry to those who preferred the vegetarian lasagna, refried beans, potato cheddar soup and chicken fajitas when digging through the Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) piles. Barbecue shredded beef, vegetarian taco pasta, and seasoned black beans will replace them starting in 2014.

The Combat Feeding Directorate went out and collected feedback from troops, and it turned out vegetarian lasagna didn’t have many fans.

Now, vegetarian taco pasta is a mystery. Google vegetarian taco pasta and images of spaghetti inside a taco shell come up. Look forward to see what that sort of dish looks and tastes like, but apparently troops liked it.

Jeanette Kennedy, a senior food technologist at Natick Labs, Mass., did answer why the common request for pizza has yet to make it into those plastic pouches. She acknowledged that pizza is the most requested food stuff for an MRE.

However, the food preservation technologies haven’t allowed Natick to make a suitable pizza that travels and lasts as long as the military needs. Eggs, deli meats and macaronia and cheese are other items in high demand.

Kennedy said the military is getting close to a break through. Right now the military uses the retort process to sterilize food. The food is heated up to 240 degrees in their pouches in order to kill the microbes that causes bacteria an food spoilage.

Natick Soldier Research is testing non-thermal, low-thermal, and advanced thermal processes in order to sterilize food, Kennedy said.

She predicted in an Army release that the next generation of food could be processed with “microwave sterilization, high pressure processing, super critical carbon dioxide preservation, or osmotic dehydration”

Yeah the ravioli is pretty good, I like most of the vegetarian ones. The cheese tortellini is another good one

Don't do it. It's honestly not worth eating unless you have to eat them.

I have a few at my house. They sold them in the commissary as single units. I got them for a camping in the rough trip I was taking. I think the kids opened and raided them tho.

Beef stew is good. Not far from Dinty Moore in the can (but without the tin taste)

The brits have Yorkie bars in their MRE's. And I think the Irish have a kendal mint cake. (They are the bomb!)

I hate it when they serve the beer warm! Not sure if you can under cook the Kobe, the lobster on the other hand... :)

Chili mac by far is the best... I've gone through some great measures to get those things. once raided all the MRE boxes before we out to sit in Oman for a month and made 2 full boxes of just Chili mac.

Ghost, you have MREs in the air force? not a personal cook for every little airman?

We do but the Airmen do need a day off. We had an MRE draft on one deployment, buddy and I managed to get 3 cases from the chow hall and then divvied them up. When we weren't eating those we actually went to the Army side to eat...food was waaaaay better than ours at the time

I lived off MREs 8/9 months we were deployed. Was on a ship about 70% of the time but since I was a flyer we missed all the hours for chow and just ate MREs..

The 46E was getting phased out for the Osprey which I refuse to fly on (and it was rare to get a school seat) so I had nothing to really go to. Between that, the fiancé and the Marines downsizing a metric fuck ton, my choices sucked. It was stay in as a warehouse supply clerk, Embarker, or admin, or get out and go to school and start my new career.

Buffalo Chicken is my favorite but I usually go for any of the vegetarian ones. Got to work with the Canadians while I was in EOD school(before I failed out) you want to talk about some damn good eaten they have in their MREs. Chicken Bacon Carbanara FTW.
