Mobo

So as some of you know, I'm building a computer. I've got an SSD, Video Card, Case, Power Supply, and RAM. Next big thing is a motherboard and CPU. I know I want to go Intel (probably just an i5 for now), but which socket should I use? Which motherboard of that should I use? (Full ATX only; should be good enough to be upgradeable in the future).

Recommendations, come forth!

im not really impressed with the new Haswells.. really depends on what your plans are.. but im totaly stoke with my Ivy Bridge 1155 3770k.. i would have been just as happy with the I5 version 3750k and i keep it air cooled and over clocked but have a kickass cpu cooler block with a kick ass cpu cooler fan.. but im rocking it mini itx.. still i can play total war rome II on Max settings with no isssues.. so far ive throw quite a bit at it and i havent even seen a hiccup so far.. and i just got my 25 ft mini hdmi to HDMI so now im rocking Steam on my 62"...sweet only thing is i have seen a few games that dont like the 62" Mitsubishi ... but most have no probs and looks great

oh and Mobo since your going ATX only .. i love the reg Asus line of MOBOs but ive been eying lately ROG Maximus series....maybe ROG Maximus V Formula ATX Motherboard.. something like that

I think for the Mobo I'm gonna go with the MSI Z87-G45. Good deal on it right now.

But for the processor, should I go with the i5-4670K? Or spring an extra $100 for the i7-4770K? I'm really tempted...but should I?

Depends I guess. I don't think it will make a big difference for gaming. Do you plan on capturing and editing at all though?

Yeah. But I have no idea how much. I've got the complete Adobe CS6, but I don't use it too much right now. Probably will a little more when finish this desktop.

Hmmm...Newegg is actually selling the i7 with a free $20 newegg gift card, so the real difference is $80. Should I spring for the i7 over the i5 now?

I'm thinking no...the 2MB of Cache and the 100MHz in clock speed isn't gonna make much difference, especially since both are overclockable.

I got the I7 but heard after the fact the I5 performance are just as good if not better for gaming..

Okay. I just ordered the i5. So now I have all my parts (except my storage HDD, which I'll buy with all the rebate cards I'm getting). Can't wait for them to get here so I can put them together!

Yeah I like EVGA, but there weren't as many deals from them. I got an MSI Radeon 7950 3GB for $180 and an MSI gaming motherboard and i5 for $370. No ASUS or EVGA stuff in my computer.

I had a rampage extreme, and it went to shit, and their support was terrible.. It was a 9 month ordeal, of mailing shit back and forth, and the problem still didn't get fixed..

I guess i'm just old school, im of the opinion, if I pay $400 bucks for a mobo, it should be be worth that amount of money, and they should be giving me kick ass support.. I know :der:

My mobo and both my vid cards are evga.. love them.. never had a problem.. I've had very good experience, and I also feel that matching mobo and video cards, work better then a mixed set..v

Okay I've got it all put together but I guess I should post some pics. Here we go:

Case doesn't really make cable management easy, but you can see the video card and most of the internal components here.

Exterior shot. Case came with 1 120mm blue LED fan, and the Red 120mm LED fans by the same manufacturer were on special, so I picked up two. The Mobo is red-themed, so it matches.

Monitor is a Dell U2713HM QHD (2560x1440) IPS panel.

Loving it so far. Case could be better, but the hardware rocks. First experience with a SSD, and so loving the quick load times and boots. Processor has an unlocked multiplier, and the mobo is set up for overclocking, so if and when I decide to go that route, it should be a snap (Graphics card manufacturer matches the mobo, so that's a plus). I have a Cooler Master Hyper TX cooler for that purpose. Right now at stock settings, I haven't had a problem with BF3 on Ultra at 2560x1440, and it looks gorgeous. BF4 on the same settings was running fine until the tower fell on Shanghai lol. The dust particles slowed graphics to a crawl. So BF4 will have to be slightly lower settings. Overall, I spent $1,710.80 after rebates and sales on this (including OS, monitor, all cables, and hardware).

Thanks! It's really not that hard. There are some good guides out there, and hardware/software now is pretty much plug and play. The last one I built (with my dad, about 10 years ago) was much more difficult. The biggest part is selecting your parts and making sure they'll work together.

I bet, depending on how or what you do with computer, certain hardware plays a huge roll in what will work best with what you plan to do.

I just use mine to internet surf so I don't need no crazy hardware to do that.
