Windows 8.1 Upgrade...Fail!

any one else getting this:

Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit (with Media Center) Store Update Restores to 8.0 with 0xC1900101-0x40017 Error......i have a legit copy of WIn 8 Pro with media center... i couldn't find it in the store till i searched a article that has the link got it to start downloading and downloads and does a complete install till the very end and restart and shows me that error....

I heard that people with pro where having problems...

I have pro updated no issues, I did have to update my video card to the nvidia beta

I did have to finish a couple of updates before it let the 8.1 install

Pro or ProWMC..(with media center) they are different.. i started with pro and then did the free upgrade ProWMC...
when Win8 first came out they offered free upgrade...it used to cost extra to add Media Center to Pro... i think in 8.1 its just part of it..
also for the people who are have the most failures sounds like are the ones who were early adopters to win8.. i got it the 2 month out from release for a fresh install on my MiniITX rig .. not sure if that is true or not... but ether way it sucks
looks like the finger is being pointed to nvidia???or graphics in general... i read a article last night that speculated about compatibility but i think there must be more to it..... hmmm interesting...guess ill have to wait and see

I'm not in any of those categories lol.

I like mac's cause they are easy to use and they don't go to shit like most computers that use Window's OS.

Plus I've had horrible expierences with those types of computers and I don't game on them either.

Didn't say you were, just that a lot were. The days of unstable systems are past. I haven't had a BSOD since my graphics card died on my Vista laptop (not Window's fault). And that was the only one since XP.

It's been years since i owned one and you're probably right about the new computers being more reliable than those in the past.

Shit, I remember my first laptop that I paid 4 grand for.

That was back in 2000 when laptops weren't so popular like they are today.

No kidding. My dad built his own computer for about 10K in the early '90s (including printer, backups, monitor, etc). Now 10K will buy you a ridiculous workstation.

I will say this, my laptop then is still a working machine.

Though the parts aren't no where near the capability as the ones they make now...they are still durable to keep the computer going.

Damn thing is a freaking brick.

I can't tell you how many times i've dropped that damn thing and the computer still turns on without any problems lol.

Shit, you drop a newer laptop now and you'll find yourself right back at the store getting just about everything replaced lol

That's true. That desktop probably worked for 6 or 7 years before we cannibalized it for a few other parts.

wow 10K?? i could go crazy with that much for a PC.. i spent 500 on my little ITX beast and its running like a champ .. but i need to upgrade my graphics to KepLar GPU...

I like my iPhone and iPad, but I'm not a huge fan of the Mac product line, ie. computers and thier software. I used to have that blackberry touch and I hate that thing and the OS to the core. We also have an Asus Transformer that we love but it gets used a lot less then the iPad. I will always be a "PC" guy for non mobile devices. I'm basically an Asus guy now. For laptops I've had a vaio, hp and a Dell XPS before my Asus and started hating them just a few months after I got them. I've had the same Asus for a few years and still love it. I'm split between console and PC for gaming.

My ipad was pretty much a godsend when the kid was in the hospital. We could pack one device instead of six.

We still use it all the time now. Educational apps for my daughter, craft apps and youtube for my wife, and angry birds for my weekend #2's.

Agree. My younger son monopolizes my iPad a lot and now he has everyone in the house playing My Singing Monsters on their various apple products.

I like having my iPod/kindle/email/etc in one place and in a size my old eyes can read. Yes bigger is better when it comes to old age and tablets. (Let's see what dirty things you boys can make with that statement)

Well i reinstalled windows 8 from scratch.. then add the Media Center.. then after just a few drivers.. went to..Update win 8.1... it would download to 50 percent and then fail... tried all the tricks and tips to get it to load.. after a few hours.. it did it by itself.. finished installing.. everything looks great.. tilll.... i rebooted next morn.. and BLAMO... back to it booting up and seeing the window logo.. and thennnnnn nothing but black...WTF.. guess im redoing and sticking with windows 8 for a while longer .. its something with the video out put that is the issue but i have the latest and greatest drivers ...i just dont know what to do from here...any body have suggestions?

I have been having random lockups since I updated to 8.1. I am very tempted to wipe/reload win7.

yeah ive tried tried and tried some more...

i think its my monitor to be the truth and i dont have another to swap it out with to test.. so i reload straight 8 with MC and keep it from updating.... my two other 19" got lost in the mail and the post office "is looking in to it"..wtf..

i like 8 but im on my laptop the most that is still on 7..

But at least this time (unlike when I did Microsoft's Win7->Win8 upgrade), it doesn't lose all my apps and data when it fails. Mine also gives me some code that implies it might be driver related or whatever, but all drivers are up to date and my Google Fu comes up short.... Not for lack of trying. I've gone ahead and done the whole shebang.... Removed unnecessary hardware, verified BIOS settings aren't a problem, made sure drivers are up to date, etc... What's really funny is that the compatibility wizard comes up with different results sometimes....

Yeah i hear ya ..first two times.. lost everything ... restore points and all... already had most of it on other drives and my C: is strictly OS and apps.. but i had to load from scratch twice... next time i decided to check to see if it works ill use a black drive to test on.. the crazy part is after the upgrade .. it works untill i start downloading drivers and the such and have to reboot... then it doesnt want to recognize my monitor... nothing but Black screen... ive given up for now but maybe in a little i try again... 8 is working fine for now

I have just accepted it as another possible PITA associated with a non-OEM system. I'm pretty sure most OEMs are taken care of; there is some piece of hardware or driver associated with my setup that just will not cooperate with the upgrade (must be a critical component because I've removed all the unnecessary peripherals). I wish it would at least point to the culprit on a failed upgrade, their error return isn't very comprehensive from a diagnostics standpoint.

Does MS offer an 8.1 clean install if you've got 8? I'm tired of fighting this upgrade crap. For now, 8 is doing fine, but for some reason I just want to push through this, probably due to the amount of time I've already sunk into it.

I haven't seen anything for a clean install of 8.1 other than purchasing a brand new piece of hardware. As far as I know you have to buy 8 then upgrade, I could be wrong though.

after trying and trying with no success i gave up after a while... but then i tried it again.. IT WORKED!!.. i think i did two things differently.. one used a different hard drive and went through and found out my MVP Virtual gpu software was not 8.1 compatible at all.. no clue on what really fixed it but it works for now...
