View Full Version : Met a Guy from Hollywood Yesterday

I was photographing some historic houses in my neighborhood for our holiday home tour and met one of my new neighbors who just moved into the neighborhood in September. His house is on the tour. He moved away from Oklahoma City in the 70's and decided to move back after visiting some friends. Did I mention that he does lighting for movies in Hollywood? One of his most recent films was Ender's Game. Check out this guy’s imdb page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0558942/?ref_=fn_nm_nm_1'. As a filmmaker myself, I was super excited to meet him. He was breaking down the scenes in Ender's Game and telling me how he lit them. It was fascinating. I, of course, asked him if he was interested in working on any independent films. He said we should go grab a beer sometime and talk more about making movies. I'll definitely be taking him up on his offer.

Remember not to grab too many beers, you may be doing movies that can only be shown in Germany.... lol

That's awesome bro. My current job has me working security on TV sets. It can definitely be cool watching those guys at work.

No autograph, I didn't even think of asking. I really enjoy meeting and visiting with the people who make movies and how they do it. For example, Steve and I discussed using the new LED lighting systems. He broke down a scene in Ender's Game in a barracks and told me they had lit it mostly with LED lighting except for the tungstens overhead which gave off a green tinted light to make it look less inviting. He's a really down to earth guy. Looks like an old hippy.

The people I've met who actually make the movies have always seemed to be a lot more approachable than the stars of movies, even the more famous ones. Just before I made my first film I met Cameron Crowe and he was incredibly nice and encouraging. Not at all what I expected of a famous director, especially on location shooting a film.

I'm pretty sure its because the light isn't always shinned on them but the stars who act in the movies.

Outside of Steven Spielberg and some others who stick out like a sore thumb lol, he may not be one of those

Very cool man. I hope you manage to catch that beer from him, and if nothing else, gain some insight.

I have a good friend here in LA who does AC work, and he was on the set of "Battleship" and "Battle: Los Angeles", filmed here in Baton Rouge, LA. Pretty cool gig. He even managed to, eh hem, "acquire" shell casings from the "Battle: Los Angeles" movie. I had friends do drives for movie stars, and yeah, "prude" is putting it mildly.

I just got to have about a 5 minute conversation with Desmond Harrington (Detective Quinn on Dexter)

He's on the set of the show I am working security for. Real cool dude. Very appreciative of military service.

That's crazy! I've been watching Dexter all week, trying to catch up. Quinn was a pretty cool character.
