Looks like a small number of people that were lucky enough to get their hands on a PS4 early are reporting some serious hardware problems. Hopefully none of these issues happen to our PS users on Friday.

These things have been shrink wrapped to pallets in warehouses all over the place. There's bound to be some bad apples.
I don't get why IGN is acting like Sony isn't doing anything to help that dude. They're sending him a box to send it back. What else do they want?

Man, FW/SW issues are one thing, but if they're having hardware issues at this point in time, that's not good. I hope they get that rectified.

Honestly, if I had already gotten my hopes up about having the system on launch, I would do that too. But then again, some would say I'm still a kid, so maybe it makes sense.

Well if they have the capability to send a box then why not send a new system and have him send back the dead one. But that's just how I think. The more pressing issue is if this is just a random one time occurrence or a wide spread problem. For Sony's sake it had better be the former.

Because he could be lying. Then he gets two free PS4's a week before launch. It's the same process Microsoft used for the red ring.

Even IGN s pS4 bricked but Sony drive over and swapped it out lol ..... It's apparently resulting from the 1.5 patch for Dayone that allows the ps4 to be native 1080p which it wasn't lol so all the hate is just clouded smh so rushed... Look at the list of features it has that's operational compared to not.... Kind of crazy

From what they were saying it was a very small percentage. I think it is more bad press than a problem at this point. What I think is killing them is that one of those was one they sent to IGN. I just find it somewhat funny cause they have been focused more on bad mouthing Microsoft instead of promoting their product and karma can be a bitch sometimes.

We'll see. Something is going to happen.
Kataku (the website) Figured it out and said it was a fluke. Well somewhat because IGN may have had a different problem.

While most are happy with their systems here area few from amazon that aren't too happy. And these issues seem to be the majority of the problems.
Unfortunately I can't review the product too much yet since, out of the box, it fails to work. One star is the lowest a review is allowed to go, but my particular unit, while physically existing in my hands, does not work. I will certainly update my rating to reflect my experience with the system once I am actually able to.
The system turns on, but does not output a video signal or boot up. The bar of light on top of the system continues to flash blue, but never turns white as it is apparently supposed to once it has started up. Attempts to boot it into "safe mode" to potentially diagnose or fix problems (such as reinstalling the firmware available on Sony's website) do not work as the system immediately turns off after the second beep instead of entering safe mode. That's about it. It beeps, flashes blue, and sits there until you shut it off.
I spent two and a half hours on the phone (over two of those hours on hold) attempting to see if they could diagnose or fix the issue, but they concluded the same, that the console was DOA and needed to be "repaired". The relatively untrained customer service representative also made mention of the many calls he had fielded today (no doubt many of them being quite irate) and that almost every customer he had spoken with had experienced a very similar result to my own, and needed their consoles to be "repaired" as well. I was told by the representative that I should expect to receive a box to send my console to Sony "within 7 to 10 business days". I do not know yet how accurate that is, especially since others have been told that the total turnaround to Sony and back should be within that same time frame, but that is what I was told to expect.
After the apparently untrained customer service representative made another mention along the lines of "Yeah, I don't think we really checked these before sending these out" (a statement he was obviously not qualified or authorized to make), I was then pitched an extended warranty for my dead console, just in case there are any accidents with it (an offer I of course declined in its current state). I was extremely polite and cordial during the entire conversation, but at no point was even an apology made for my time and inconvenience or any hint of compassion or sympathy from their customer service representative.
Several hours later, after I had still yet to receive the confirmation email regarding my "service request", I made another attempt to contact Sony's PlayStation Support. With others online still reporting multi-hour waits on the phone, I decided to try their live chat option (since they apparently do not have an email address or form for their support sections). All subsequent attempts to contact Sony through their "Live Assistance" chat were also very unsuccessful, as every time I was lucky enough to enter the queue, I was eventually dropped out with a "Status: Canceled There are no agents available to chat with you right now. Please try again later." message.
I get it. Products fail. Devices don't operate as expected. With a mass market electronic item such as this, there will always be a certain percentage of systems that do not work as intended. However, early indications are that this is certainly higher than normal (even impacting promotional and press systems), and they do not appear to have handled the damage control well within this crucial time period.
At this point, I'm currently weighing sending the unit back to Sony versus arranging for it to be returned to Amazon. I do not doubt that this product is well worth the money when it is operating in full capacity, but my console is among many others that simply failed to work right out of the box. Until I am able to adequately review this console in a fully-functional state, there is no way for me to give this product anything more than a single star as a rating. As a fan of games and who hold no allegiance to any particular company or brand, I do find it quite unfortunate that the situation for many, in addition to Sony's handling of the matter thus far, have erased just about all of the consumer goodwill they earned during E3.
I currently have, on my coffee table in front of me as I type this, a dead console with a stack of half a dozen launch games, a PlayStation Plus subscription card, a PS4 camera, and two Dualshock 4's. Without any substantive response from Sony through the launch weekend, I feel that I will have no other choice than to return all of them, and maybe pick up the console again in a year or two once these issues have been resolved. For the sake of both Sony and their customers, let's hope that's something that will come sooner rather than later.
Purchased mine 30 minutes after E3 coverage on Amazon. Arrived at my house around 7:00 PM on 11/15/2013 System instantly went to Blue pulsing upon hitting power. Manage to get the system into safe mode, it did some kind of system check, then booted fine. Upon main menu, went to try to login account, asked for update. Downloaded update, system restarted, hasn't worked since. Blue pulsing light all the way.
I can occasionally get into Safe mode in an attempt to repair the system as suggested by those that talked with Sony Technical Support. After selecting the correct options the system would restart after doing its thing, and proceed with blue pulsing light.. Tried the hard drive pull with safe mode, system hangs. Tried to update using USB stick, system hangs at 22% complete. Safe mode if left on for a bit will start to show artifacts then eventually hang (Controller and Safe menu no longer responds).
I called Sony Tech Support waited for 50 minutes and gave up.. I don't have that kind of time to waist on a Friday night.
Extremely disappointed in Sony.
Update 11/16 - 1:00 AM*: Manage to get a hold of Sony Technical Support rep- after cycling the power, checking the cord, then getting into safe mode after 3 attempts, The rep had me Change Resolution, the system started to boot into an Update install mode and proceeded to install the update. Upon restarting the console went straight back into Blue Pulsing Light. Then, of course, I lose all communication with the rep. Phone call was still connected but no one was on the other... I'm back now in waiting line which may take up to two hours. I'll update this if any progress is made.
Update* 11/16 - 2:30 AM: After letting the console sit for 45-50 minutes while off, I manage to get a rep who told me to just select option 6. The PS4 finally booted up just fine. After getting off the phone with the rep, I accidentally bumped the PS4 and it instantly shut off. Back to pulsing blue light. Looks like I have to let it 'cool' for a bit, then safe mode, option 6, then maybe I can get it to work. I'll probably call them later today and have them send a replacement, but at least I'll be able to rig it so I can play it.
Update*: 11/16 - 10:30 AM: Do not jiggle the HDMI port. Do not jiggle the system. If you get the Blue Pulse unplug the system and let it sit for 40 minutes. Then try to get into Safe Mode (hold power down for 7 seconds) and Select Option No 6. I've been using the system for 40 minutes now with no problems. Playing Killzone, will update if anything else occurs. Plan to Bump it up to 3 stars if system maintains.
Update*: 11/16 - 11:40 AM: After 50 minutes system turned itself off. Faulty unit. Waited on the phone for another hour for a new Rep.. Decided to go ahead and get another sent to me through Sony. The Rep said that calls of Faulty PS4 are originating from primarily Amazon, and a few from Gamestop.
I'm to receive a box to place the faulty unit in within two days, then a replacement or mine fixed sent back within three more days. Looks like around 11/22 I'll have a PS4 that works.
Love my PS3 and I was really looking forward to spending all weekend playing my new PS4. Got it delivered after work Friday evening and hooked it up. Started playing Killzone multiplayer and voice-chatting with my brother, made it about 10 minutes and the PS4 shut off with no warning. Now its totally bricked. Doesn't output anything, won't boot into safe mode, and just pulsates a blue light. Spent 2.5 hours waiting to talk to someone at Sony customer support. They were very polite, but the only option to get a new one is to send it to them for service and wait 2 weeks. Judging by how long I was waiting I'm betting this problem is a lot more widespread than originally supported. The ten minutes I spent with it were fantastic, it's an awesome machine. But that doesn't really do much good if its just a brick until after thanksgiving most likely. Really put a damper on what I thought would be a fun launch weekend. So disappointed in this.
Thought I was doing the smart thing of pre-ordering the system and getting it shipped to my job so I didn't have to worry about the hassle of being available to sign for it or missing the package if it came. My PS4 cam promptly to my job and I sat next to it all shift just knowing I was going to have a great gaming weekend. Boy was I wrong. First the box wasn't in good shape and the amazon tape they use was torn. But I never had a bad experience with Amazon so I said whatever, as long as my PS4 was intact I'm good. So I get home, unbox the thing carefully and plug it up. No success! all it did was beep when I pressed the power button, I saw the blue light and within 2 seconds it shut off and never powered up. I kept tapping the power button and still nothing. I unplug the system and plug it in again, hit the power button and the same thing happens, 2 seconds and then shuts off. Not to mention, something clearly is loose or broken on the inside because it rattles when you move it. I checked the Sony forums and behold the sea of angry gamers in the same boat as I with their pre-ordered boxes from Amazon. Its clear that Amazon may have gotten a bad shipment of PS4s or maybe the way they was handled is to blame, I don't know. I called customer support only to be on hold for almost 3hrs and still never got a hold of anybody. This whole situation is unbelievable! I don't want my money back, just want this thing replaced so I can get back to gaming.
These are the more vocal reviews from the first page of the launch edition and apparently the PS forum is chock full of things like this. Not looking good for Sony so far.

Interesting that most of the bad ones came from Amazon. I agree with the last dude-probably a bad batch that Amazon happened to get the bulk of. Doubt this is Amazon's fault.

Yeah, well we will see what happens with the Xbox releases. In the meantime, remember that everyone complaining, being vocal, and calling help lines are the people with problems. Of course you are going to see a lot of them if you work in a help center. You think someone will call to say, "hey, it's working great"? No. I can appreciate the scare that the tragic RROD gave everyone, but really, 4% of 4 million consoles is 40,000. That is a LOT of people calling in at once to complain.
