I used to like talking with my buds about strategies and tactics we used in FPSs and thought I'd try out a thread on the topic.
So I have always thought FPS games call upon two different skill sets from a player. The first applies to any FPS game and is being good at the mechanics/physics of the game and can be improved with practice. As an example: acquiring a target quickly and accurately. When you see a target and zoom in with your optic/iron sights, the closer you are to the target, the less you have to adjust which gives a quicker kill. I used to practice this specific skill by switching to a sniper rifle (in games w/o much action) and as I would run around I would choose a specific target like a pots or a spot on a building. After moving the reticle to where I thought it should be I would zoom in and see how close I was to the target. Having to move the crosshairs more than 1/2" or so (on screen) would be too much and I would move on to the next target.
The second skill set would be the use of tactics and the application can vary slightly from game to game. There is the always-classic flank (both shallow and deep) which I am sure all here are familiar with. There is also "closing the distance" and is used when you and an enemy both have cover and are engaged. Usually the enemy will move into cover to reload or recover health and at this point I would break cover, sprinting toward the enemy. I would place an object (can be a wall, tree, mailbox, etc...) between myself and the enemy (the closer to the enemy the better) such that when the enemy pops back out of cover he does not see me; the enemy either thinks I have run away or am still behind my old cover. I get as close as possible, always keeping the object between me and the enemy and when I believe I am close enough, break cover again, but now I have the element of surprise and know where the enemy is located, both things he lacks. Boom. Easy kill.
There are many many other tactics that can be employed and I hope this thread can be used to discuss and refine methods of dispatching other teams.
