View Full Version : Air Force draw down
Is anyone getting caught up in this crap? I am not eligible for any of the volutary programs thankfully. Below is the official AF link on which grades and AFSC's are affected.
https://gum-crm.csd.disa.mil/ci/fattach/get/3071950/1387576323/redirect/1/filename/Enlisted%20Voluntary%20Program%20Eligibility%20Chart%20-%2020%20Dec%2013.pdf
Edit: Voluntary seperation pay for my rank and years in $13,000 involuntary is $59,000. Unless you have a sure thing on the outside why would anyone volunteer?

This is some good info. I heard MYPERS has all the current stuff. If I was non-voled I think I would be okay on the outside... plus the 60k would help me get established until I got setup. No way in hell would I walk out for 13k. The only people I see taking that option are those already facing issues.

That's what they told us at Commander's call on Thursday. The people at risk are those with issues in their records.

I don't have any issues but I am still worried. But 60K plus GI bill would allow me enough time to finish school and find a descent job. The 60K was based on E-6 with 14yrs in. If I can make it through this year at least I can get one of those 15 year retirements! So its all a wait and see......

I am only at 6 years as an E-5 so I have no idea what will happen.... just know a lot of people are gonna be pissed.

25,000 Airmen is roughly one out of every 13 Air Force wide. Not every shop/office is going to share the burden equally though. Judging by that list you're going to see entire jobs and a lot of E-4s getting the axe. It's going to be depressing and scary for a lot of people, but between these separation packages, GI Bill, and what appears to be a recovering economy, it could be worse.

I saw a lot of this kind of stuff first hand when the Navy did it. A lot of good guys got screwed out of their careers but it did get some of the fuck ups. The biggest lesson we learned was that this should not have been a "Big Navy" decision. It should've been up to the commands that knew the eligible individuals, not someone who doesn't know them and is only looking at their service record. I hope the AF does a better job than the Navy did. Good luck to all of you that are eligible.

Also, like it was previously mentioned, you shouldn't volunteer unless your voluntary sep pay is more than your eligible involuntary sep pay

Looks like I need to make Tech this year....
Found out some new info. The separation pay for volunteers is the same as the non-vol plus 25% for volunteering. I still wouldn't volunteer for this crap! Also if you want to see the manning in your career field go to the below link. You have to be on a government computer. For my AFSC chiefs are at 92% manned yet they are on the list to get rid of some. Looking at the numbers and afsc's on the list it looks like if your grade and afsc are over 85% they will get rid of some.
Once there click reports then A1 COP reports.
EDIT: If your not going to be near a gov computer soon send me your AFSC and I will get you the manning level for all grades in that AFSC. I have a gov laptop at home I can get on.

Hey Jamie can you look up a 2W1X1 for E-5... fairly certain we are over manned quite a bit.
Ssgt is 100% manned tsgt is 115% msgt is 121% sra is 78% and overall you are at 100%. In all of 2W1 you only have 1 CMSGT. In your career field by skill level 5 level is 89% 7 level is 118% and 9 level is 96%. On a side note I used to be ammo......before I cross trained to Flight Engineer.

Jerad......
GET IT!!!
your Airframe and Powerplant license is a must .... like a IT guru with his MSCS, A+, C+,N+, Sec + certs.. more the merry but it gets you past the door for a interview!!.. but even more for us wrench turners... it gets us in the door!! and a pay bump in most places.. its your life blood as a civie!.. once you take it its good for life!! and Active duty still covered it in Tuition assistance for a time.. i got mine paid by US ARMY.. BEFORE I GOT OUT!!!
most of the helo gulf coast operators dont care what you worked on as long as you have your A&P..and if you have years under your belt.. they will pay accordingly to how seasoned a mechanic you are..plus they will train you on the airframes you work..in house or factory..
there is always government contracting but I WARN YOU..lots of LAYOFFS... STAY AWAY...lol top dollar mean your more expendable.. its better to stay away from that..

depends.. its a 18 month collage course at most collages that offer it.. unless you pre-qualify to get your FAA Tickets signed..by the local FSDO.. but that is all determined by your Job Skill and Code... if you get your tickets you can take a fast track course that is anywhere from 7-14 days.. but then if you get your tickets signed you can go and find a DME to give you your oral and practicals.. and then just do your three written at a local FAA testing facility ... but i would only advise this last one if you know a reputable DME.. lots of people have gotten their license pulled cause a DME was found taking money for license without proper testing..in turn they give you 90days to get your test done else where or pull your licences.. serious shit!
i did the second choice.. went to Georgia Aviation Technical College.. and that test isnt hard.. but it anit easy.. its alot of knowledge you have to know.. not only fixed wing and rotary but old school dope and rope plus NDI and basic sheet metal.. the general written test is like 60 questions.. out of a possible 1,000 ..crazy but there is a special way to study for the test.. after i got mine .. i came back and told my commander that all the NCO's needed to go do it.. its a wealth of knowledge and my head hurt for weeks after i passed and got mine.. but its been better to have in the long run..
Are you told what the questions are? On the aircrew side we are given a closed book but we know the possible questions. Same deal huge bank and they select a few.

the written test (3 each) are all closed and electronic.. but you get the Courseware books and they have all the possible questions.. like i said you study over 1,000 questions to take you general written test which was 60-80 questions.. the Airframe written test is smaller around 500 possible and the test is like 40-50 questions.. and the Powerplant is the same as the Airframe written..

So Embry Riddle would probably have to be my choice. Is it like a full-time school schedule or just one class? Honestly my only choice at the moment would be Saturdays as I work nights and I'm already working for my Bachelor's.

not sure if ER has a A&P course.. i doubt it ...but you can ask maybe they do now..i know the 18 month one is a full time schedule..but things change check it out with Embry.. Jamie was talking about the one in Daleville or ozark..as we like to call at ft. rucker.. redneck tech is a full a&p school

Looked up escc in Alabama and if you have an associate degree the A and P specific stuff should only take 15 months to complete. Their program has the FAA testing built into the program.

**edit*** i found the brochure for it its 9 day course

lol ahh insider information, hmmmm....I mean it is possible, but I don't know if I would put too much stock into that number. Also remember that some people may be heading for the door anyway so they figure why not, or their career field may be overmanned, some are just so close to retirement that they may not have any choice. Its not always because they want to leave or that the service is having a hard time keeping people. Remember, we didn't make the decision to cut 25K people at our level, its the forces that be that made that choice for us

Exactly. This stratification bullshit though is garbage. I have nothing but positives and the guy was like... your TIG may hurt you. I have no fucking control over TIG. If I make rank I make rank, shouldn't matter how long I have had it on. This shit is frustrating for good people who want to stay in and a copout for those wanting/needing separation.

Was told today that the force reshaping is on 'hold' and likely canx'ed. Apparently when they planned this years budget it was the sequestration's budget and not the actual budget we had... So of course everyone's lives were impacted with life changing decisions because someone didn't do their homework. What the flying fuck is wrong with our leadership. Either way I am glad for those who were on the chopping block even though some deserved it not everyone did and I knew we would lose a ton of experience and good people. Plus there's Russia.... Methinks Obama and Congress may have not clearly thought about this drawdown through and through. Lol

My leadership is unaware of this. They won't do anything until it's official. Case in point, I have to fill out a form for my airmen with three bullets so leadership can sort out who is the best or worst in the squadron. Three bullets isn't shit. They have opinions on every single one of us and no amount of bullets will change that.

We compressed a bunch of bullets into those 3 lines. We were listed about to be stratified but for example
Airman of the Quarter; Airman of the year etc. And so on. With acronyms a plenty. I'll keep you posted on what I hear but usually AETC gets the info fairly quickly so it may not have disseminated yet.

There's nothing like having to justify your existence. As a marketing and advertising professional, I've gone through this several times when the economy has gone bad. And, when you try to tell them that this is not the time to cut marketing and advertising budgets, but to expand them and grow market share because everyone one else is cutting back it only sounds like you are trying to save your job. Oh, I lost my job each time, by the way. :) Hopefully you guys will have better luck. I'm pulling for you.

I appreciate it, but it seems like they already have their minds made up, at least to an extent. I was given roughly 24hr notice....that tells me that they don't want the strongest case and merely something to give us the warm fuzzy feeling that we contributed before they made their decision. Time will tell I guess
