Memories, and a promise.

on December 29th 2005 I was involved In a battle south of FOB fortress Kunar province Afghanistan. Taliban were advancing to assault the base, I lead the counter assault and lead them (the Taliban) through a valley where we surrounded them on 3 sides, the battle lasted until the 31st where we chased them to two compounds, we surrounded the compounds, from the 29th until the 31st we fought them.

45 minutes before the clock struck midnight for new years, I lost both of my legs trying to save a fallen comrade, he was shot, I ran over, and we were both hit with a mortar, sadly he lost his life, and I lost my one leg, and my other was so severely injured that it was later amputated.

I was Medevac'd by an American Black hawk, from a farmers field only a few hundred yrds from the battle, by the time the Helo got there and left with me and other casualties, it was 11:59.

the clock struck midnight and the man treating me looked into my blood shot eyes and told me "happy new years brother" that was the calmest moment of my life.

I soon after passed out. my new years gift was peace, even though it came from chaos, a man I never met before from a different military and a different country, brought me peace that night.

I am posting this to remind all of you never to leave a fallen comrade behind, over there, or at home. demons are within us all, and I want all of you, military prior, current or future, to promise me you will NEVER leave a fallen comrade, you will never accept defeat and you will never give up.

but remember, so as long as men die, liberty shall never perish.

Brandon, thank you for your service.

Though you were in a different military from another country, you were fighting the same fight us Americans.

As Plato said "only the dead have seen the end of war" looking back to 2010 while my unit was out there it was a hard time to handle but when I finally visited his grave 7 months later it calmed me and opened my eyes to everything he taught me while he brought me up through the ranks and how even in death a friend is still by your side.
