Hey guys, I don't have the specific posting yet, this is more of a preemptive strike just to gauge whether there is any interest here at all, I'd love to give you guys first dibs in case anyone fits the bill.
Basically we're looking for a couple new guys in the SW Engineering department here. Once needs to be pretty experienced with embedded coding, ideally within the Industrial Automation industry, and another can be a junior hire. We write firmware for OEMs and internally for our products and for custom projects. Not all that thrilling but it ain't half bad.
When I started here, all I had as far as coding experience was from a couple programming classes at Michigan around the turn of the century followed by some hobbyist stuff on hobbyist boards and then a little dabbling in mobile SDKs. But they gave me a shot here and I was chalked up as a gamble that worked. I went to school and got my degree while working in support with a side of programming, and now I'm (supposed to be) fully into development, but my replacement in support is dragging ass so I'm still involved there for an hour or two a day.... Anyway, I'm off on a tangent again. Because the "gamble" on me worked, and because I'll essentially be in charge of this new department, I've been given the opportunity to try to fill the Jr spot with someone who (like myself originally) has little to no specific experience in embedded and Industrial Automation, but is highly motivated, grasps concepts quickly, and has a good understanding of the C family of languages. The rest can be learned if the basic foundation is there. I'd imagine a CS degree, maybe certs, maybe even EE or CompE would work, whatever. If the boss is going to give me the gavel on this one, I'm going to make it my rules, but I don't have a whole lot of leeway on the related experience front. Some sort of related formal training or OJT type experience will need to be shown.
Here are some of the S.K.A. we're going to seek in the posting when it does come out.
• Embedded 32bit ARM based programming.
• Embedded operating systems.
• C/C++ Embedded programming.
• Command line compiler such as GNU ARM tool chain.
• Professional software editing tools i.e. Eclipse, etc.
• JTAG based debugging tools.
• Peripheral communications controllers I2C, SPI, Serial, Flash controllers, and Ethernet MAC.
• Industrial communications protocols CAN, Profibus, DeviceNet, etc.
• Industrial Ethernet protocols EtherNet IP, PROFINET, etc.
So, if anyone here is interested, please let me know. I am NOT HR but we don't have HR, so I'm going to be stuck with sourcing candidates here; I would like to start with circles closer to me, then work my way out. I suppose I'll spread the posting via vet resources, such as M4L etc once it's finished, but I wanted to see if anyone here would be taking a stab at it. If you have questions about ANY aspect of the job not mentioned, let me know. I can post here in the thread or we can do PMs, I don't care. Either way it's fine.
The guy I hired to replace me in support... Not a veteran... and although I complained about the level of babysitting I had to do in the Corps, I know I'd rather be mentoring a vet than a civilian, but it's not a requirement. I just know vets speak my language and it's easier for me to communicate with vets as opposed to civilians with fragile feelings and no structure.
