I am sure you all have heard about this.
I agree it was some excessive force, but there was some major resisting arrest going on and the cop was outnumbered. Obviously it was a bad situation as you can see someone is trying to hold the girl back before she got to the cop. From the cop's point of view, he had to diffuse the situation quickly. I have heard of way to many cops getting killed from stuff like this. Although, I am sure there is more to this than we know. It is crazy to see what the world of mobile video has brought us.

I normally wouldn't say this but.... if I was in his shoes I would have lit her up too. it was assault on a officer and after that point, he had the right to proceed at his discretion... if they just would've complied none of it would have happened. I especially love the dumbass behind the camera saying;are you serious???? like 50 times what a fucking moron. then he was trying to get his balls up by putting some base in his voice trying to get the other bystanders involved. because was a wannabe billy badass and he thought he was safe behind his camera phone, I would nailed his ass for inciting a riot and interfearing with an arrest.

Hah, well the cop had every right to hit her in my mind. they were resiting and more force was necessary, he should have tazed or maced the one in black though because he was having a rather hard time arresting that girl, he also needs to spend some time at the gym.

Interesting. It never would have happened in Canada though. We don't have "Jaywalking". We have Obstruction of Traffic. So, if you are crossing the road and interfering with traffic, then you may get a ticket. If you aren't impeding traffic, then you're okay.

The 800 lbs gorilla in the room is racism, but I really don't feel that it was a racist act so we can leave that alone even though some activists are pursuing that. The best person to answer this would be Rookie since he's a cop. I'm just a dispatcher, but I always have officer safety in mind. Let's be clear, she wasn't punched for jaywalking, she got hit for the event that transipired while the cop tried to detain her. I also don't think he could have done anything right with that camera rolling. He'd be persecuted for even the smallest amount of force used.

In the situation IMO I think he acted appropriately. That one girl got in between and tried to push the officer back which is a definite no go in my book. That girl that didn't get hit was also resisting arrest and he slammed her on the car. I would have done the same thing. Then the guy video taping said "why do you have to throw her on the car?" Maybe because he was pushing and resisting he had to restrain her.

I could just imagine if that shit happend in Iraq when we were doing a security check on some Iraqi before he entered the base. If his buddy was doing the same shit (pushing us) as that one girl did, his ass would of have been knocked out too.

isnt it obstruction of justice when the lady in pink pushed the officer when he was trying to handcuff the other lady?

I am going to have to agree with all of you on this one. The big thing to remember is that weapon on the Officers side must be protected. He needed to do what he could do to restrain the lady and also had to keep an eye on the crowd. I think the swat to that other ladies face was an instant reaction. That whole situation could have got VERY ugly if all those on lookers started getting involved. I myself wouldn't have wanted to be in the Officers shoes. I do wonder though why a Tazer or Mace wasn't used. :? I hope Rookie does gives us his opinion on this.

Yes plain and simple the pink shirt assaulted a peace officer nd obstructed justice, girl in black was resisting arrest. IMO all of those people should all be thrown in jail for inciting a riot or attempt

You know I see some folks asking if he needed to hit her... and I hear a lot of people saying that this was him overstepping his authority....

All of this reminds me of a story that happened here in Pittsburgh while I was working for the Criminal ID section.

Basically what had happened was close to what we see in this video... officer in a single car responding to a minor incident. Next thing you know bystanders get loud and start to involve themselves in the situation. In the case of the Pittsburgh officer instead of it being a situation where a person got punched and YouTube gets massive hits ... it turned into like a 60 or 80 person mini riot with a massive response from the PD that ended with the officer involved in the initial issue hospitalizes and many others on both sides injured.

I think that all officers now are very concerned about the "next step" if a situation gets out of hand, and that can easily happen Group Psychology is a really scary thing IQs drop sharply and violence a real probability.

So what I'm saying is that for all the people who are questioning the Officer's judgement in the situation ... put yourself in his place and know that he was more than likely thinking of a very very short time line that ended in him not going home the same way he reported for duty. He might have felt that the way to maintain the situation was to act quickly and decisively in a manor that demonstrated that the situation was absolutely under control.

At the end of the day could he have chosen another tac... sure... HOWEVER... the good news here is a woman only got punched, no one was shot, no one was tazed or sprayed, and the incident appeared to be resolved without escalation from that point.

Kind looks like a win for everyone from that point of view.

NOW for the thing that really gets my goat... WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND GOES PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON A POLICE OFFICER, DELIBERATELY TRYING TO OBSTRUCT HIM/HER IN THEIR DUTY, AND EXPECTS TO NOT GET SOMETHING IN RETURN?

Seriously.

(steps off his soap box)

sorry for the rant
