WO for the Army?

Howdy y'all,

I'm looking for some unbiased, well for the most part, information and opinion on the WO in the army. I'm at a point in my life where I need to make some decisions to ensure flight opportunities.

I was in UND's ROTC program, but I left it since the congress decided to cut the funds for the helicopter training program scholarship in 2011. Since then I've been flying extensively, but the new minimums for airlines are increasing the expenses and time first anticipated. Being 21 years of age, I still have plenty of time to consider applying, but I need to complete some of the pre-reqs.

I know the application process takes some time to complete, but I'd like y'alls opinion on my stance, the process of becoming a WO, and what WOs think of their position.

The hardest part is finding a recruiter that want to put effort in putting you in as a Flight Warrant.. That only way your coming in off the street. I left recruiting its easier to put someone enlisted than WO.

Going enlisted then WO requires you to hold the rank of staff sergeant be for you can apply then it's based on a selection board and your not guaranteed aviation it's based on needs of the army and aviation is a coveted spot so there extremely difficult to get!!

Make sure you don't have any tattoos from the elbow down, and knee down or you won't get in.

I don't know how set you are on the Army, or how close you are to completing a bachelor's, but right now it's pretty easy to get a flight slot in the Air Force - they have a shortage of pilots right now. Downside is you'd have to go through OTS (pretty much requires a "tech" degree to get in) or grind through ROTC (absolutely no fun), and if you're a few years away no guarantee you'll get a slot.

I have yet to meet a WO I didn't like. If you are interested in flying I would go that route. In the AF the only way to pick your A/C is to be top of your class. After that they pretty much just put you where they want you.

For the most part that's true. It also depends on who you're in training with (what they want), and how many are available. If you want helos you split off after 6 months in the AF (how many get helos in each class does vary, but usually there aren't too many that want it).

Actually you only need E6 schooling BNCOC, to go Walking warrant... TO go aviation its easier as they need more, you can be Straight off the street to Flying warrant, or come in enlisted and be a PFC it doesnt matter...You have to pass the Physical, have high letters of Recommendations, and look great on paper for the board. They convene more often for Flying boards than walking warrant boards

Lot of this. Guard is another good place to look in to, as many of the WO's are active guard, and can regularly log as much or more flight time than active duty.....but if you go guard, don't go officer. Flight time gets restricted too fast.

This is more of what I was getting at with my question. If you're set on army aviation, I've got a buddy who just finished helo school for the Army as an off the street warrant officer. I can ask him how he did it since I'm not knowledgeable on the Army.

For the most part, I'm fixed on the Army unless I land a position in the Air NG. Well, I didn't realize Army NG had warrant officer positions to be completely honest. I always figured the Army NG's UH-60s were being flown by officers when I see them running the traffic pattern at my airport.

nope.. tons and shit loads of WO in the guard and reserves .. my buddy was a E6 in the guard Avionics and just finished switching over to fly UH 60's in the same unit in fresno..

in the army there are three types of warrants..

1. (Ground)walking WO ... in career Fields of all sorts like wheel mechanic or admin ..etc. but usually you have to be enlisted in that field i think..
2. (aviation) WO I.E. ..pilots.. either highschool to flight school guys or off the street.. or you can apply while in.. ive heard if your enlisted Aviation the board takes that in to better consideration when selection happens
3. and the last and hardest one to get is a Aviation Walking warrarnt. these are only selected from Aviation MOS and you have to have a OutStanding packet to get selected and usually a E6 or E7.. its a non flight slot so you dont fly but you get flight pay.. sweet gig.. usally these guys are the ones that run you PC/QC or Tech Supply

They're still hard to get but if you get it, you get your wings (unless you fail training, check what happens if that occurs). The Marines, and I think Navy have an OCS option that can put you in a cockpit too, and if you fail you're not stuck in some shit job.

Yeah. The downside to the army is the shit jobs if flight slots aren't available or I'd be unable to make it. That's why I'm liking the idea of applying to air national guard for a flight slot. No obligations if you don't get it.
