so one seamingly simple question. If we agree that PTSD is a disability and it is proven that it was sustained in war does this not mean that the soldier was wounded in battle, this would not the puple heart be considered. Now with PTSD has been found to be as debilitating as any other injury suffered in war so why do soldiers found to have chronic PTSD and is on VA disability for it why are these soldiers not awarded the puple heart. I DIDNT GIVE A FINGER WICH WOULD HAVE EARNED A PURPLE HEART IN BOSNIA, I SIMPLY LOST MY MIND, IN TURN, my JOB, AFTER ETSing. I lost nearly everything in my life and nearly my family and my own life because of the hate and confusion. Do we deserve or am I just a greedy bastard.

I believe every soldier, retired or in service, should receive the purple heart.
The USA, more specifically the government, doesn't see mental illness or impairment as worthy of compensation, but rather physical alterations to a soldier. I'm sure some language on conditions of receiving the purple heart are somewhere.
The entire US needs to understand that mental illness and impairment is becoming a problem we can no longer shrug off or push underneath the carpet.

Though I agree that PTSD is an "injury" that should get more recognition, I feel that a purple hearth is not the main point we should focus on. I say that they first get help to the people who need it, and then they can think about handing out awards.

That seems a bit much...I'm not opposed to PTSD sufferers receiving it possibly, but everyone? No.

While PTSD is something that should be focused on and treated, a Purple Heart should only be for those wounded in action. Don't take anything away from the guys who lost limbs or had hot metal go through them.

I think PTSD treatment and other things should be more emphasized and there should be VA claims that ACTUALLY work, but the Purple Heart? No. Just my opinion.

Sorry fellas, though I see your point, as a Purple Heart recipient I have to agree with Jared on this one! Because there is no way do distinguish between just being in a combat zone and getting PTSD and being in the thick of it and actually sustaining wounds an getting it that way! So if you gave it for PTSD then every one that deployed would receive it and in my opinion that would be right!
Honestly the bad luck ribbon (Purple Heart) shouldn't be awarded for PTSD because it is now being given a blanketing effect. A friend of mine went to trs (separations classes) and the va rep told the whole group 85% of which never deployed to a combat zone to claim PTSD when they get out. It's a ridiculous factor. I know that it's dehabilitating but it's one of those things that us warriors have to deal with especially when we are diagnosed with it. It's part of combat and everyday life in the military.

Going back to the original point, PTSD doesn't qualify for a Purple Heart because it isn't a wound inflicted by an enemy force. There's simply no way to pinpoint a specific event or action that triggers it.
The only way to make it fit is to change the definition to blanket cover any injury sustained in a combat zone, which would cheapen it immensely.

Even tho I can not imagine what y'all go thru personally, I have seen and still do hear about what it has done to most of my family (PTSD). I do agree with the guys on this thread that said they do not think the Purple Heart should not be given for PTSD because I have seen people just like JT is talking about... When the going gets crazy, the pussy's cry what, oh yea PTSD.... Not saying ANYTHING about the people that TRUELY have it and need help, it is VERY REAL but it is also very faked by some.... Just like in the civilian world, everyone in the mother has a Bad Back so they can get SSI...... They do need to put A LOT more $ into helping those with it and weed out those that are crying Wolfe!!! The Purple Heart is for those that have been wounded by an enemy force, PTSD is from within that person...... I hope I did not ruffle any feathers, like I said I am on the front lines with you on trying to get more backing and research for the cause and or cure of PTSD..... All comments are just MHO.....

and to reiterate here, it may have been said or not... I know the thread is titled "combat induced" buttttttt PTSD is something that is not military specific, there are plenty of people that go through traumatic events that get PTSD.
I just really wished there was a better reintegration program for those with PTSD, the whole shut up and color approach is a live grenade waiting to go off.

What really needs to happen is for PTSD to be treated like anything else and not an illness. People nowadays see it as a mental illness when it shouldn't be. The only time it is really mentioned at all is when someone "goes off the deep end" and does something bad. Then of course if they had it, it is brought up in a negative light.
With the VA saying to claim it is fucking asinine. People are just looking for ways to make the easy money. There is actually a new investigation going on now into the practices of the VA. I'll find the story about it.
And just like Kant said, anyone can get it. Although it is not military specific, we are the ones who experience it the most.

The problem with "treating it like anything else" is that the medical treatment is pharmaceutical. There are better studies being conducted, and there are a few that involve a simple memory task with a computer simulator. I could see that in 5 years veterans will have a much easier transition back into society.

I'm Medically Retired from the Marines because of PTSD. People with physical Wounds obviously deserve the Purple Heart and all the benefits that come with it. I still feel unconformable going to the VA for my appointments, because I see all the World War Vets, Vietnam Vets and the young Veterans with lost limbs. We are all considered Heroes and we know we'er all Heroes and I dont think we need to be Highly Decorated or have a Medal to prove that. I hope you dont take this the wrong way. Thank you for your service Brother.

At the Bham VA right now for a C&P thought it was for my PTSD turns out it is for my old claim to be re-evaluated because a VA doc said I got screwed over when I first got out with my initial rating

I have been going back and forth on this and I do believe that we should get it, however I feel that a lot of guys would fake the condition just to get the medal.
