- You have much more negotiating power if your buying new. Used car have almost no margin on them, where New cars have have anywhere from 1000 - 10000 margin.
- Haggling is typical if your buying a new car, anything from cash to options are things you can negotiate. don't expect to get much if your buying used.. that's just the way it is.
- Have your financing done through your credit union, you usually get a better rate, and you don't have to have the down payment if you're paying upfront.
- Ask questions.. If you don't know, ask..
- Do research on the car you want. The internet has literally all the information you need, use it.
- Do a test drive, and sit in all the seats. Make sure the seats are comfortable, and you have plenty of headroom, and legroom. Test the stereo .
- Take your time, don't let yourself be hurried. If they are trying to rush you, or they tell you this deal won't last til tomorrow, WALK AWAY..
- Think it over, if the deal sounds to go to be true, get it in writing, and then ask to think about it over night.
- If your buying used, check all the door jams, look for color variations between the door and the frame.
- If your buying used, look under the hood, make sure you don't see any fluid leaks, or spray. also check for any black spots, which might indicate burning. check the hoses and make sure they aren't cracked or brittle.

Tips for new car:
Ask for the invoice price . While they are not at liberty to give you the invoice price, just explain to them that you know they want to make money and youre not trying to get it for the buying price and be flexible and allow them to make something off you. If they say they're not allowed to provide you that. They are lying to you.
Search a couple dealers in the same area for the same car and know the value that they will sell you the car at.
Thank you guys for your input it's appreciated

What kind of car are you looking at? A good thing to do is check KBB they have car reviews by them and consumer reviews. Check out the forum for it most cars have their own forum. There is always more than one dealership for that kind of car, if you don't like that dealer find another one. Like everyone else said test drive it think about it research the crap outta it.

Cash is king dude. If you have cash, you have all the leveraging power. Just play your cards close, and look for the best deals
I have about 38k it's just making the right decision if I should buy new or buy used and save up more to buy later to get a better model loaded

You already have such wonderful advice here.
I would add.... Be guided by what you NEED and not what you WANT.
In a former life, I was a great study of Zig Ziglar. I was trained by a San Diego Consulting firm (a Fortune 500 Company) and IBM in both sales and public speaking.
(Need satisfaction, selling)
If the salesperson does not address your 'needs', take Dave's advice and walk away.
Make sure you are not overcome by a list of 'nice' features (the bells and whistles of the car), look at what is going to get what you need in transportation. Will it last? Will it have 'service after the sale'? Many things to consider, and that is before you consider the car itself.
Good Luck
Mike

Remember buying used you have no type of warranty (depending on who it is you're buying it through) so if the thing fucks up right out of the gate it's all on you. I was going to buy used but I decided to just get new.

Would caution against settling and planning on buying something better, as settling sucks.
Also, don't always let them know you're going cash until you're ready to sign. They'll sometimes give you deals assuming they'll make it up in interest.

I just remained as vague as possible and got my trade in up $1500 from where they quoted me and talked them down from 31k to 30k so it helps to be direct with what you expect.

hate to tell ya jared, but 5k-10k is usually margin for the dealer.. Now if you got a 10k+ discount, that would be impressive.. That would mean you actually paid negative their cost. Only way dealerships typically allow that, is if they think they'll make it up on your trade, or they are getting other dealership incentives for volume, parts, service, etc..

Well I started with 35,525 on the MSRP - got it down to 30k. Plus the car up 1.5k so 6.5k total isn't too too bad. I figured I wouldn't be able to bargain much more. USAA said I paid the cheapest price possible pretty much.

Just a suggestion, but check on the True Car App for dealerships that give that discount. You will get $1500 to $2000 off MSRP through True Car. At the end of the month I'm picking up an Audi S3 and I'm driving to New Jersey to get it. I will be getting $2,065 off MSRP. It's worth looking into!

You could do what I did and take up their whole day test driving all sorts of cars you don't want till you settle on the one you wanted and by then they are to tired not to just give you what you want.
