I think I downloaded the free portion of DCS. I want to try the Combined Arms module. Someone could spend a lot of money very quickly with all of the additional modules.

Here is the secret. About every 3 months they a have a sale. Usually about 40-70% off the modules. Not through steam. I would not use the steam version. Just download from the DCS site and sign up for the newsletters . I have not messed with combined arms, I think that needs a little more work.. Anyway.. soon they are going to release DCS world 2.0.. which is a totally revamp and release the Nevada map.. They are also working on the Straight of Hormuz map. Also F-18 and several WWII aircraft and a European map to go with it and campaigns.

They have a bunch of stuff coming down the pipe. I like to jump on the virtual aerobatics server every once in awhile and the Dogs of war server, WWII missions.

I've thought about this game plenty over the past while. I used to be really into flight sims about 15-20 years ago. What keeps me from getting back into them is that I always balk at the price of a good stick setup. I never end up being able to justify it.

I've thought about this game plenty over the past while. I used to be really into flight sims about 15-20 years ago. What keeps me from getting back into them is that I always balk at the price of a good stick setup. I never end up being able to justify it.


I have an el-cheapo stick it has twist for z-axis (rudder) but that sucks, I do have a pair of saitek rudder pedals. You can get away with a cheaper stick for the fixed wing. I also use an track-ir which as for the A-10 -- you can get into pilot overload. Most of the modules are study sims, but there are settings and functions like auto-start. For example, to start the A-10, its the same as starting the real thing (takes about 10 mins. You mess up you start over.. Everything for the most part is modeled, except for classified stuff. Actually the A-10 module started as a project for the ANG. It was toned down for retail. There is an arcade mode. Also the Flaming cliffs 3 aircraft are not study a/c. There is a lot to know, but everything is not fully functional and more arcade than study sim. I agree I don't play it enough to justify something like the Thrustmaster warthog.

Even if you have a cheaper stick you can still get a lot out of it. You can download DCS world and the SU-25 and TF-P51 for free.. if you want to have a look... (SU-25 and TF-P51 are part of the base DCS world download)
