Looking for PC advise

My anti virus subscription ran out so I need to chose a new one. I had trend Micro for years and liked it until recently. I have an older Asus G72GX (specs at the following link). I'm not sure if it's the machine, antivirus, windows, other programs but it has gotten incredibly slower. When running the anti virus from TM I literally had to wait up to 5 min from waking It out of hibernate and logging in before any programs would be responsive like they are supposed to be. Can anyone recommend a cheaper option?

We mostly use it as a media PC now and I do plan on eventually replacing it with a purpose built unit now that I no longer have to worry about deployments.

Just my opinion...never pay for anti virus software... Microsoft MSE.. For win 7 and below.. Avg free or ahavast... I've never gotten a virus using free anti virus software.. But had norton ...got 5 viruses and slowed system resources... Done it's a rip off in mho....

Agreed with Chinook, on win 7 and down I always use microsoft security essentials, and the built in Windows defender (the replacement of essentials) on win 8 and up. I also pair that with MalwareBytes, which offers a free and a paid version, and have not had any issues since

Thanks guys. I'm going to have to see what other system resource leeches are slowing it down but it's a lot better already with TM inactive.

I concur. I too use MS Security Essentials. Good small footprint, very fast run, and gets updates directly from Windows Update. :amen:
