Hi everyone. :)

My name is Dr. Jaime Banks, and I'm a professor/researcher at West Virginia University. My work focuses mostly on communication, behavior, and identity in online games, and I am currently conducting a study about the gaming experiences of U.S. military and veterans. There is no particular agenda or politic behind this study - I am a gamer myself (mostly WoW, at the moment) and I am the daughter of a career Marine. The research is motivated only by a scientific interest in understanding how gaming plays a role in the everyday lives of those who serve.

To participate, you must be an active, reserve, or former member of any U.S. military branch, and you must play a digital video game of any kind (computer-based, console-based, or mobile; FPS, MMO, casual, or any other genre). You will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey about your gaming experiences, and it is anticipated to take about 30 minutes to complete. Every participant who meets these criteria and who completes the survey can choose to enter a random drawing for $50 gift cards (your choice of Best Buy, Steam, or Game Stop). At the end of the study (in about 4-6 weeks), one drawing will be held for every 100 people who participate. If the winners prefer, I'm also happy to deliver the $50 via Visa gift card so it can be donated to Extra Life, or to another military/veteran or gaming charity of your choice.

If you wish to participate, please see additional information and begin the survey here: http://wvu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9H3aVuYz21V6TxX

Additionally, if you would like validation of my research in this area, you can access my university page here: http://comm.wvu.edu/fs/faculty/jbanks and my Academia profile here: https://wvu.academia.edu/JaimeBanks

If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at jabanks@mail.wvu.edu. I will also try to keep up with this thread and respond to any questions as soon as possible.

Thanks!
~Jaime

Awesome - I really appreciate that! It'll take a few months to finish collecting the data, analyze it, and write it up ... but I'll be sure to come back and post both the complete paper and a TL;DR version. :)

Just a quick bump to bring this to the attention of anyone else who might be interested ... I'll be closing the survey in about two weeks, so please consider participating and sharing the survey with anyone else you think may be interested. Thanks! :)
