Looking for insight on IT or Engineering professions

So I'm trying to decide what I want to do for my next career now that my time in the Army is getting short. Two of the options near the top of my school list are IT and engineering. As far as a focus I'm looking towards the security, networking and forensics side of IT. Not sure if is do well programming. A focus for engineering would be electronics, mechanical or computer. I know a few of you have careers in those fields or have taken classes in these subjects and was hoping you could give me some insight into these professions. One thing that is important to me is I need to see tangible results from my work in order to get some satisfaction from a job. I do work well with others and don't need much in the way of supervision. What is your experience and what are your day to day activities like? Any experiences will be helpful. Thanks guys.

Brain.. I did the same thing... IT... Got all my certs and schools.. And yet aviation drew me back.. Because of our experience you start a a higher rate that starting a new career.. You need to pm and I'll tell you why I went back to aviation .. Plus my job now has the best schedule ..14 on and 14 off!

Hi Brian, When I retired from the Army I also wanted to go into IT, but I also wanted to put my leadership experience to use. Instead of the IT/CS degree route I went IS (Information Systems Management). In IS you are the IT project manager and you have more upward career mobility. In addition to the IS degree, to be a project manager the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is a must. If you want to work in government IT contracting a MBA is almost essential for helping gain the contracts. If you are interested in more information let me know.
