Leaving Active Duty Discussion

For those of you that have left the active duty side of the house. what was the major selling point that made you want to get out of whatever branch you were in? this is a debate that i have had with many Marines, and Sailors that i have had the pleasure of serving with, and it has been a huge topic on my mind recently as i have decided that i would most likely be getting out of the Military after over 9 years of active duty. what are your thoughts on this topic?

Well I can relate partially to this. I'm getting medically retired so it's not really an option to stay. One of the big positives to me will be stability and choice in where I live and work. It's hard to keep moving and starting over. We want to establish ourselves. Also after 12 years I really miss being around my close family.

A lot of my soldiers have gotten out in the past year since the army did away with our job. None of the ones I've talked to have regretted the decision but like most veterans I know or have ran into all say they do miss the camaraderie. I know I will.

As a member of the Air Force I would say go talk to an Air Force recuiter. I have served with many former Marines in the Air Force. Marines are typically not a retiring service. They are a young mans game, if you are looking to retire do not be afraid to switch services. The Marines do a good job of demonizing the other services but you will find a familiar family in switching to the Air Force. My father was a Marine and when I went to join the military I asked him which service to join and he simply asked me if it was a one and done or a retirement desire. I said life lone retire and he said join the Air Force. The Air Force was a bunch of dumb asses and cut too many people and is now looking for people so take a look.

Well I got out because every deployment the barracks go filled with married guys separating with their wives. Plus my reenlisted package came back as DI 10K resign bonus. I used the GI bill to pay for school, had a good time and id really well, but I was not married until after college. I will say, if you get out join the reserve or guard, just do a 1 yr or 2 yr contract, this ease you into civilian life. Continue the PT, nothing worst then the 30 pd weight gain most vets get post 2yr service. Its a different mind set, you have to watch what you say and do, I know been to sensitivity training to many damn times. If your going to get out take a good long time and think of everything your budget, what your going to do, just the basics. Your high school friends have moved on, you will miss your bro's, believe me you will never have that feeling in Civ life. I would do what I do with anything write out a postivie list and negative list go over with your family and try to make the best decision you can.

I got out because all the games, and bullshit. I loved the Navy, the camaraderie, and the travel, and wanted to crossrate into crypto at the end of my first 4, but when my 1st 4 was up, they wouldn't let me go to CT "C" school, unless I finished another 2 years sea duty.. That's when I told them to suck a fart. The inflexibility of the military was what ultimately drove me out.
