Let see what you have. The only rule is that you must actually own the coin you are showing (Integrity here people). So either scan it if possible or find a picture of the coin on the interwebs.

i can't find a picture anywhere and it's packed up but in com school in 29 palms i got a MCCES coin from the command Sgt Major for being voted for the warrior award upon graduation :D

may not have been the most amazing coin out there but i was proud of the way i earned it

I have several. It seems like they give them out like candy these days so, I'll only carry one if it means something to me. I have one from the Command Chief Master Sergeant of Air Mobility Command but I can't find a pic of it. It's shaped like a dog tag with the AMC patch on one side and Command Chief chevrons on the other.

If you can find it post. It sounds awesome.

I got this one on my last deployment to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. I had a few mech and AE friends in that squadron. I happened to be doing nothing that night and helped then do some engine maintenance.

No offense, but people in non-combat units hand coins out like every day is X-MAS. :) I could be wrong, but some of my best friends from childhood are rolling in them. Also, a lot of times you just need to be in the right place at the right time...and Generals don't leave the wire!

That's true they do. About a third of my coin were handed out that way. Others were gifts from friends I went through training with or who returned from overseas. But I have only gotten one coin for being in the right place at the right time.

I can't seem to find but two of mine, I used to have at least 5. Never had an really any good ones. I keep forgetting to bring them out to the bar because I am wanting to get my buddy with it.

This coin is about 2 1/2" dia!! LOL

NIce OIF coin but what's the second coin? All I can make out of it is USMC.

Yeah I knew they would be crappy quality... Damn camera phone!! :lol:
It's my unit coin from the Marine Corps ball one year. It's my reserve unit Kilo 2/14. We changed over from M198 howitzers to the HIMARS that's why you see the rockets and cannon. I remade that coin in photoshop and that is what I am sporting on my clan sig. Since I couldn't find anything good on the internet to use from my unit.

No offense taken. The original purpose of the challenge coin overall was to prove membership and improve morale. Combat coins should not be given unless youve been in the actual theater. Every coin I have, was earned by doing something for the other, and yes being at the right place, at the right time.

The coin is from HC-4 - Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Four "Black Stallions" was dicommissioned in 07 in Norfolk, VA.

Since I started this coin challenge thread I though I should post the history and rules of a coin challenge. All info was obtained from Wikipedia, so if you see something that's wrong or doesn't look right, PM me and I'll fix it.

The History:

Air warfare was a new phenomenon during World War I. When the Army created flying squadrons they were manned with volunteer pilots from every walk of civilian life. While some of the early pilots came from working class or rural backgrounds, many were wealthy college students who withdrew from classes in the middle of the year, drawn by the adventure and romance of the new form of warfare.

As the legend goes, one such student, a wealthy lieutenant, ordered small, solid-bronze medallions (or coins) struck, which he then presented to the other pilots in his squadron as mementos of their service together. The coin was gold-plated, bore the squadron’s insignia, and was quite valuable. One of the pilots in the squadron, who had never owned anything like the coin, placed it in a leather pouch he wore around his neck for safekeeping. A short while later, this pilot’s aircraft was heavily damaged by ground fire (other sources claim it was an aerial dogfight), forcing him to land behind enemy lines and allowing him to be captured by the Germans. The Germans confiscated the personal belongings from his pockets, but they didn’t catch the leather pouch around his neck. On his way to a permanent prisoner of war facility, he was held overnight in a small German-held French village near the front. During the night, the town was bombarded by the British, creating enough confusion to allow the pilot to escape.

The pilot avoided German patrols by donning civilian attire, but all of his identification had been confiscated so he had no way to prove his identity. With great difficulty, he crept across no-man’s land and made contact with a French patrol. Unfortunately for him, the French had been on the lookout for German saboteurs dressed as civilians. The French mistook the American pilot for a German saboteur and immediately prepared to execute him.

Desperate to prove his allegiance and without any identification, the pilot pulled out the coin from his leather pouch and showed it to his French captors. One of the Frenchmen recognized the unit insignia on the coin and delayed the execution long enough to confirm the pilot's identity.

Once the pilot safely returned to his squadron, it became a tradition for all members to carry their coin at all times. To ensure compliance, the pilots would challenge each other to produce the coin. If the challenged couldn’t produce the coin, he was required to buy a drink of choice for the challenger; if the challenged could produce the coin, the challenger would purchase the drink.

The Challenge:

The rules of a challenge are not always formalized for a unit, and may vary between organizations. The challenge only applies to those members that have been given a coin formally by their unit.

The challenge, which can be made at any time, begins with the challenger drawing his/her coin, and slapping or placing the coin on the table or bar. In noisy environs, continuously rapping the challenge coin on a surface may initiate the challenge. (Accidentally dropping a challenge coin is considered to be a deliberate challenge to all present.) Everyone being challenged must immediately produce the coin for their organization and anyone failing to do so must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and everyone else who has their challenge coin. However, should everyone challenged be able to produce their coin, the challenger must buy a round of drinks for the group.

While most holders of challenge coins usually carry them in their pockets or in some other readily accessible place on their persons, most versions of the rules permit a challenged person "a step and a reach" (particularly useful if one is challenged in the shower).

Variants of the rules include the following. If you are able to steal a challenge coin, everyone in the group must buy you a drink. During a challenge, everyone in the group must buy you a drink if you are the holder of the highest ranking coin. Some units provide strict time limits to respond to a challenge.

These two were given to me on separate occasions. This is the Battalion Coin for the 1/36 INF (Spartans)
One was for recieving the Purple Heart, the second was for my duties performed as a HMMWV Driver out in Iraq.

This was given to me by the Commander of the 1st Armored Division (2 Star General) When he awarded me the Purple Heart he handed me this coin and said "PFC Cannon, thank you, I hate to see the young ones get hurt."

Why couldn't they do this for every military member? Or at least give us free beer. :D

For the commander coin I got this. It was given to me for excellent performance for the Inspector General team the week they were at Tinker AFB. All I did was show them around, answer questions, lead 30 Airmen and get their cars but hey whatever. ;)

I was an Engineering IC man, so yeah, my cruises kinda sucked, first on the ship, last off. 12 hour day +4 hour watch. The only good thing; we were one of the few shops on the ship that had satellite TV. :ugeek:

As for combat, yeah, being an a carrier is nice, don't see a lot of action, just a lot of plane movement. most of the fleet buffers around us, so we can launch planes. The one fishing trawler that got to close, got a frigate up its ass. We had another one of those skiffs try to out run us, and literally got ran over.. We were picking up pieces of the wreckage for an entire day. I'll bet that was that fisher-mans worst day, lost his ship, probably got cursed out by our CO, and probably got a fine as well. :shock: :D Other then the occasional air-dale who goes looney any threw themselves off the side of the ship, not too eventful. :roll: :lol:

We had a young female air-dale who absolutely didn't want to get underway. We had just pulled out, and were maybe 2 hours out of port, perhaps 50 or so miles off the coast of Florida.

Well this genious is up on the 4th deck smoke mezz, which was starboard, forward of centerline.. (towards the front right side of the ship) -- my sailor jargon is a bit rusty.

anywho, shes up there telling everyone she needs to get off the ship, she cannot be underway, and to make a long story short, she decides to take a swan dive off the smoke deck.
Well, the 4th deck is 4 stories above the water on a Carrier, so this is about 50ft, give or take.. Anyway's, she take a swan dive, and her dive turns more into a belly flop, on account of her catching her boot toe on the saftey chain on her way overboard, so when she hit the water, ass over teakettle, she most likely knocked herself out. Now, we're maybe 50 miles out, give or take; so we were probably going 20-25 knots, so when she hit the water, she just floated alongside the ship. Well, every sailor knows, this is the worst place for you to be when you go overboard, because the suction of the screws.. (The screws on an aircraft carrier are 12 ft tall.)

To make a long story short, as I image you can already image all the gory details, we didn't find much of her body.

As you know, a ship never leaves the scene of a man overboard, without doing a through search, so we spent over 2 ours scouring the area, with small boats, and helos only to turn up a pair of torn to shreds dungaree's.

Continue on, we were on our way over to the gulf for a 6 month rotation. Another whole battle group was waiting for us to relieve them.

i lucked out and got a Sergeant Major of the Army Coin..back in OEF3 here at Kandahar Airfield...Jack L. Tilley ... kinda lucked out to get this one... his Personal Asst. was my old roomdog back in Germany(SSG Eddie Dube).. we were both wheeled mechs and when we left..we both re-classed and he went 71L and i went 67U.. so when i saw him in my hanger i was blown away had seen him in over 10 years!and in the end got to meet SMA Tilley and got this coin

That is a nice coin. I went to a dinner with SMA Tilly and SMA Preston at the same time. Well, SMA Preston took over for SMA Tilly a week later. No coinage though.

My last deployment I was tasked to do protective service for General Odierno which at the time he was the Commander of Iraq (USFI) now he is the Chief of Staff of the Army. So over that year I met and got tons of coins. I can say confidentally that I would prob not lose a coin challenge.

I'm at work at don't have acess to the coinage collections but, I see some really nice coins.

I think getting my first coin was my most memorable coin. The CG was out at the tank range and watched our TT VIII run. He was truly impressed but, was out of coins at that moment. He told the tank crew and me that he would mail them to me to distirbute to the crew. I thought nothing of it until a month later the envelop showed up with the coins and a hand written letter. I later met up with him in Iraq when he was working for the Pentagon and he still remembered me.

I was wondering if anyone had to buy their deployment coin from BN or Higher?... One nightmare coin story. We were preparing to leave Afghan and work was nearly completed on the BN deployment coin. One of our Officers was a Computer Graphics Artists and did a fanstatic job on the coin design. Well, I don't know about you but, all my deployment coins from BN and Higher we're not paid by the soldiers. When the CSM told me we would have to buy them, I went through the roof :mad:. Everyday soldiers don't pay for coinage from higher. I personally think there is a moral code against it. I bought one coin just for the unit back home (the CMDR and myself paid for the distribution of the Company deployment coin ourselves) and most of my soldiers in my company didn't buy them either. Most of the company had multiple deployments under their belt and no one ever had to buy deployment coins.

Sara has our coins on a rack at work over her desk, but between us we have some nice ones...ones that stand out off hand is the Operation Cobra Strike Spearhead Invasion Coin. Its totally custom and was only given to the 2200 "advon" SM's who where 1st into Iraq in Mar 03 and were awarded the Spearhead Device for the ribbon. Coolest thing is it has "War on Iraq" instead of war on terror or OIF...I have the CSMA (also Tilley) and ACS/JCS GEN Shinseki's Double Sided Pentagon Service Coin with The SecDEF office on reverse (Rummy). I received it there after a VIP funeral detail. All 3 were very nice and had lunch with us after our detail with the "Presidents Hundred"...I'd bet we have maybe 36 coins on the rack, all awarded or deployment tokens...I know we have every damn 82nd coin (maybe like 10 CG ones, couple ADCS's, and for sure 7 or 8 BDE ones including the 2 highly coveted ones not slung around division often, the 82nd Master Blaster and Centurion pin set and of course the United States Army Advanced Airborne School Cadre coin! Our personal favorites by far! I'll take a picture this week so I can share them, cuz I've enjoyed the hell out of this thread...

(Also was taken back at the Ranger Coscom Tag team... that's a rare one!)

I just received this as a Thank You from our CG and CSM for all the hard work ive put in to for running our game night(COD4:MW) for the wounded warriors.. .. unfortunately a female wounded marine decided to give her up her own type of MWR between her legs to a couple army joes on base and got caught.. so as of now the wounded warriors are on lock down and not allowed to come over for Game night anymore!!...sucks...

I had my coins in a frame on a shelf in my office at work. When I finally got my stuff back half of my coins were missing...pisses me off every time I think about it
