Downloading games to your hard drive(XBOX)

I still have the NXE 60 gig xbox, and if you do too, you may notice how noisy the fan can be at times. I recently downloaded some of my games to my hard drive just to see what the point was.

It's pretty simple to do, on the "My Xbox" tab on the far left where it says "Play (Insert game here)", you tap "Y" and it will bring up the game details. Then you scroll down to "Install game to hard drive" and wait about 10 minutes until it is downloaded to your hard drive.

It still requires the disk to play, so you may ask what the point of doing this is. Once you have it downloaded, you can go to your game library and select "Play Game". (If you choose "Play (insert game here)" from the my xbox tab and not the game library, downloading the game is pointless.) Your Xbox will then run the game via your hard drive, rather than using the disc drive. This means it will take your Xbox a longer time to heat up, meaning you could play longer and the fan will be quieter. It will also decrease loading time (not too noticable in most games), but in games with constant load time (Fable 2), it is definitely worth it.

Depending on your hard drive size, you may want to do it only for the games you play the most. Modern Warfare 2 took up 6.8 GB alone, so doing this with a 20 gig Xbox is questionable (I'm using a 60 gig).

I've got a 60 GIG hard drive on my Box, but being the computer geek that I am, I think if you're constantly running games off of your hard drive rather than the disc drive, it will cause your XBox to heat up FASTER, not slower. :shock: Some of the problems that could be causing your fan to run a lot, would be: not enough air getting to the system, leaving it on all day and night, etc., etc. Have you considered getting a cooling fan for the back of your system? Might work out for ya. :D

Yeah I asked my friends who play xbox a whoooole lot more than I do, and 3 of them had used the cooling fans, but they advised me not to because they all got red ring right soon after. It could just be coincidence though. I play with my Xbox "standing up", and I noticed most people have it on it's side, so that could be part of my problem I guess.

Could be, mine is on its side as well, instead of standing up. And like I said in the "Mic" topic, I still have my original 60gig XBox w/ original controller and headset for the last 3 or 4 years! :D

I install and run all of my games off my hard drive and my unit does run a lot cooler than when the disc is spinning. It is also a really good way to save the wear and tear on the disc because once the system verifies you have the disc it doesn't spin anymore. My nephew had borrowed my WAW once and I guess there was a problem with his particular xbox because it scratched a groove in my disc that I had to buff out to get the game to work in mine again (ended up just buying another copy). I'm not so sure that you have to start the game from the Library tho. I never do and it runs off the hard drive. I only ever hear the disc spin when it's verifying.

I also have my console on it's side but that was only after it suddenly had disc loading problems when it was vertical. Just kept saying open drawer/close drawer. Guess the disc stopped seating right.

As for those fan cooling things for the back. I got one but after a week it was suddenly so increadibly loud and obnoxious I stopped using it. What a waste of money.

I don't know if any of you have the new xbox slim but I got one for my son and that thing runs hotter than my old xbox ever did. You can brew tea by putting a mug next to the thing.

I second that. Xbox customer service even told me that. Used to have one got that rrod and took it off and never had the issue wlafter that.
