Though the game has been presumed dead so many times you’d need an abacus to keep track, “Duke Nukem Forever” is very much alive – and he’s coming to store shelves soon.
Take Two Interactive Software pulled off one of the video game world’s biggest surprises Friday, announcing not only that the over-a-decade-in-development first person shooter was nearly finished, but backing that claim up by giving the 150,000 people attending the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle the chance to play the game.
The rest of the world will get its chance in 2011 – on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
First announced in 1997, “Duke Nukem Forever” became an annual presence on vaporware lists and a running joke among gamers for its molasses-like development schedule and frequent restarts. A year ago, it appeared the final nail had been hammered into the game’s coffin, when developer 3D Realms ran out of money, let go virtually all of its employees and began a legal war with its publisher, Take-Two Interactive Software.
That suit was settled earlier this year, however. And while 3D Realms is no more, Gearbox Software, the studio behind “Borderlands” and “Brothers in Arms” (and staffed with a number of former 3DR employees), has taken over development on the game.
"Gearbox has enabled die-hard key Duke Nukem franchise builders and skilled veteran game makers to stand together and deliver,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software. “All gamers deserve a happy ending and after all of us gamers feeling the full range of emotions about Duke Nukem Forever, I am thrilled to be in a position with the trust, power and means to make it happen.”
“Duke Nukem Forever” is, technically, a sequel to 1996’s “Duke Nukem 3D” - though normally a sequel takes no more than three years to put together, while “DNF” started in the Clinton administration.
The game missed ship-date after ship-date, and many began to assume it would never see the light of day. Many pointed to 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard as the reason for the delays – noting that his obsession with perfection for the title resulted in a never-ending cycle of changes.
The bad times are over now, though – and the game is nearing completion. And after 13 long years, some of the industry’s most core fans at PAX have finally gotten to see for themselves if the wait was worth it.

It'll be expensive, thats for sure. Especially as the bust is limited to 2000, and will likely be something other thsn cheap.

Duke Nukem Forever is Done

It took 15 years, but development for Duke Nukem Forever is finished. 2K Games and Gearbox Software today confirmed the game has "gone gold," signaling its completed development.
"Duke Nukem Forever and its journey to store shelves is legendary," said George Broussard, creative director at 3D Realms. "It's an epic tale of four game development studios that banded together and did the unthinkable and shipped the unshippable. When you play this game you will be reminded of that epic journey at every turn and in every small detail of the game."
Duke Nukem Forever is set to launch on June 10 Internationally and June 14 in North America for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Pre-ordering the game or purchasing the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition will grant players into the demo for all platforms on June 3.
"Duke Nukem Forever is the game that was once thought to be unshippable, and yet here we are, on the precipice of history," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "Today marks an amazing day in the annals of gaming lore, the day where the legend of Duke Nukem Forever is finally complete and it takes that final step towards becoming a reality."

Unfortunately I think no matter how good the game really turns out it can never be amazing enough to justify the nearly 15 year wait fans had to stand by for. The campaign would have to be like 200+ hours long and have the most impressive graphics ever seen alongside the most perfect multiplayer experience ever conceived to fully redeem itself. Not to say it won't be a good game, it just has the odds stacked against it at this point. It also may suffer a bit from having too many hands in the cookie jar, changing to multiple development studios like it has, but I still hope it turns out alright

with the international release today (everywhere but the US) reviews are starting to come in and the first one i've seen is....not good.
Joystiq rates Duke's latest adventure at 2/5 stars, criticizing it's "attitude" as being something that would have worked in the 90's but at this day in age being difficult to even amuse a 12 year old. Personally though, I think this over the top, cheesy 90's attitude the reviewer is complaining about may be exactly what many Duke fans were hoping for. The review also says the level design is subpar and the graphics suffer from screen tearing and framerate studdering, and the multiplayer is even worse and plagued with exessive lag. Here is the closing statement from the review:
in a world where games like Bulletstorm have managed to blend humor with first-person action in innovative and mature ways, and others like Section 8: Prejudice deliver far better multiplayer experiences for a fraction of the price, DNF remains a sort of relic - a reminder of how things used to be and how, thankfully, the genre and the people who enjoy it have grown up and moved on. I can really only recommend this as a rental to those of you who, like me, are determined to see this thing through to the bitter end. For everyone else, allow me to borrow Duke's trademark line which he, in turn, borrowed from a fellow 1990s artistic endeavor, Army of Darkness: "Don't come get some."

another less than stellar review of the Duke, this time from Kotaku with a title of "Duke Nukem Forever appears to be a full-priced mess." Here's the closing statement
what we've got here is no magnificent resurrection. It's more of reanimated corpse, a shambling, shivering thing of the past, thought dead but now brought back.
Apologies to any Dead Rising or Resident Evil games coming out later in 2011, but for its initial exhibition of something old and seemingly dead brought stumbling into the present—decayed parts still on its skeleton—Duke Nukem Forever is my early nominee for Zombie Game of the Year.
despite all the negative reviews so far, I'm still curious and will probably end up playing the game. Maybe just a rental though, we shall see

It's finally here! I got my copy yesterday and have had a blast playing it! It's just like I remember from the past! Screw the critics and what they have said! I play Duke to have FUN!!! Like one guy said on the Duke Nukem Facebook page: "Any game that starts me off pissing, then onto a boss fight and end with Duke getting a bj, is a game for me!" LOL!! All I can say is, I love it!! Hail to the King baby!!

It was okay at best 5/10, broken mechanics, gun control and overall feel were weird, cheap AI. I guess its just me being a Christian, but too many sexual connotations, wasn't as enjoyable as it was when I played 3D. I would only recommend this game to extreme Duke Nukem fans.
