question on DS/DSI

Hi ALL,
My daughter turning 8 on 11/10 and she wants a DS. That is one system I don't have nor know anything about. My questions is she to young for a DS. Which one is best I have seen 3 different types. Would you buy your 8 yers old one. Now keep in mind my 5 year old son will want one for christmas or his birhtday in January. What are your thoughts?

It's really a judgment call on your part. Both of my oldest kids (age 11) have one, though one is in repair at the moment. I got them when they were 9-1/2 for Christmas. My daughter plays it the most. The big plus with the DS is that it is relatively cheap, so to speak. Moreover, there's a very large assortment of games for it. There are plenty with characters that your daughter may be familiar with at her age, as well as some more that will be more interesting to her as she gets older.

me and my wife both have one... they are great. plus if you get a nice protective case it makes it all the better. probably the best handheld that is out in my opinion for all ages.

My oldest son (11) got a DSi for Christmas last year and passed his regular DS down to his little brother (6) and they both have a blast with them. The DSi has Wi-Fi and he downloads these things called FlipNotes that are created by other DSi gamers that are really funny (I haven't seen any thing inappropriate for youngsters, they seem to keep it kid friendly from what I can tell). Also has 2 cameras with some editing stuff that is pretty fun for everybody. Downside is it can't play the old Gameboy games like the DS.

I don't know much about the DSiXL or the 3DS, but I would think they would do at least what the DSi would do or more.

My daughter has both (although she gave me the DS when she got the DSi) and I would say the DSi is better as she spends ages playing round with the photo booth thing on it. The DSi battery doesn't last as long as the DS though.

She got her DS when she was about 7 and was able to play with it no problem. There are some educational games you can get for them too which is a good idea for maths, spelling etc. She also likes to play with the dress up/fashion designer games, and My Sims Kingdom for hours too ;-)

I have a 11,9, and 5 year old and they love them. I just make sure I buy age appropriate games for the child I buy them for. My wife also has the DSiXL and she loves it, it also gives me time to play the XBOX when they all have their DS's on.

I agree, you may want to wait for the 3D one to come out. My kids have been going through Gameboy Advance's and the follow on ones for the last 5 years (my oldest is 13 now) and they keep breaking and losing them. i get the last years model off of E-bay now used/refurbished for pretty cheap so you may want to go that route if your not into the latest and greatest.

the new 3D version looks pretty kick ass though so I think Ima have to get that.

I bought my wife a DS to keep her busy so I can play Xbox, but she plays it with her 6 year old niece when she comes over. It's really easy to find age appropriate games, as well as educational/mental stimulating games for it.

I just gave mine to my 5yo but my fav games to play on it were card games (mostly SkipBo). I also got those board game cards that have like 5 board games on it. Battleship was fun (always did like that game). My little one likes Bejewled Twist and that's pretty much all he plays on it.

Thanks everyone yes I'm going to get my daughter one on her birthday Nov 10. Yes she was born on the Marine Corps birthday all I have to say is I have well trained swimmers. Her actual due date was Nov 11 veterans day (wife was in the navy that what she wanted) but her being a good girl and the fact I made eggplant parm on the 9th (the eggplant and herbs help induce labor) she was born on the 10th. Medical knowledge is scary in the wrong hands.
