I'm gonna start teaching my Lab to bird hunt. Any tips?

Fishing pole with a bird wing/scent. It's what my step-dad used.

Unfortunately, I have no tips. I will check with my buddies who have bird dogs and see if they have any thoughts.

For retrieving, yes. I can't remember what he used for soft mouth training. He started with the fishing pole...going longer and longer casts as the dog learned. That was always his basic starter training, and was also a go-to refresher before they went out hunting.

I did the "soft mouth" training as well as got her used to gun fire. A scent is a good refresher just as you get out to the field. They actually made at the time memory foam birds that i put scent on and had her retrieve. I started with gun fire then commanded her to retrieve and then she was rewarded when she didnt bring it back mangled. the memory foam helped identify level of force she used with her mouth. very good training. She loves to go hunting with me lol. Whenever I go near my gun safe she gets excited and goes and waits by the door.

Tried to take him out to the dog park today and work with him. He decided to start a fight with two boxers instead. Guess I will have to try again later or just at home.

Home's probably best....or at least some place with fewer distractions.

I was just thinking for more room. He has never had a problem with other dogs before. But, I have heard that training them in isolation is better.

Isolation is key due to he needs to concentrate on your commands.

Exactly. You're trying to teach him something new, but he's at the place where he gets to go play.
