anybody know anything of about ferets??

For my Daughters birthday me and my wife decided to get her a ferret! small female baby ferret....we choose a ferret cause we gone through a couple of rodents already...1st was the Guinea pig... cute little dude we named sneakers but after having him for a few months had some sort of disease and died right in my wifes arms...not pretty..so fast fwd and my wife get my daughter a hamster...nice little cute one with a huge cage and ball to run around the house and be protected from the dogs..we have 1.rat terrier:teddy(female aka queen of the roost), 2. jack russel: princess (female super hyper & yet scared of her own shadow), 3.and our youngest German Shepard:Cujo(Big boy of the house & resident retard)...so 2 months ago as my wife and daughter were cleaning the cage for the hamster they put it in the rolling ball and let it go roll around the room...well as they went in to the bathroom to rinse out the cage they heard something and ran back to the room to find out our rat terrier and cracked open the ball and our german shepard wanted to play with it in his mouth...hmmm yeah not good not sure it it had a heart attack of terror or if cujo crushed its body..but it only lasted another 10 min before it died in my wifes hands...uggghhh...any way so she felt so bad and i suggested she go to the pet store and see what else they had since we had a huge cage and all...the guy at the store suggested the ferret and told my wife it had been de-gland and that it would smell a little but not bad if you keep it washed..other then that what else is there to be known about ferrets anybody ever own one??thanks for any help

I know they're spelled ferret, not feret, and that they bite, and they smell funky. That's about it.

My Ex had a couple when we where together that she brought home. I personally hated the lil Fers. These ones she had liked to bite. My Ex basically got them out of a bad situation that they where in. So, no telling how they where treated. I have seen other people with them and they walk them on a leash and they where very lovable. My Cousin has a couple that run around the house and they act like cats and even play with the cats. As the worker said they still stink even after the de-glanding and need frequent Maintenance for the smell. So, other than that I haven't heard or seen any real problems with them. If the Ferret doesn't work out I would suggest a Rabbit but, I don't know how that would go with the dogs. There are also SNAKES!!! LOL Sorry not much help on this one. I am sure Lady will recommend another Guinea Pig.

All I know is even the de-scented ones still have a mild musky scent. They love to hoard stuff so if things go missing you have to find Their lair. None of my friend's ferrets ever bit but they were handled a lot.

Rabbits are ok but they stink of piss lol! Guinea pig pee doesn' smell as there is no ammonia (or something like that anyway) Rabbits are a little more work in general and after lots of research that's why I decided on the piggies instead.

Having said that though...The flying dog is pretty special and yeah I would definitely go for that instead!

@Tobe...are you breeding these yourself or was that pic from a breeders website? If so...You must give me their details :cool:

I have owned 6 ferrets. I had 2 when I was a kid, 1 when I was in the barracks (thank god my command never found him) and 3 a couple of years ago.

1. They are social animals and can get depressed if they are alone. The best companion is another ferret, but any animal works.

2. They are relatively fearless. The last 2 that I had decided that they hated my pit-bull and would attack him constantly. They would even bite his tale and latch on as he ran through the house howling LOL.

3. They love to horde things, especially shiny things and paper. Mine would constantly steal my homework when I was a kid (no joke). They opened my backpack and would take the papers right out of my books. My parents and teachers didn't believe me until we moved and found a massive nest (made out of my homework) in a hollow spot under my dresser. They also like to take keys, money and anything else you don't want them to take LOL.

4. Even de-scented they have a mild odor (it honestly reminded me of the old school musk cologne). They do sell spray that is similar to perfume for ferrets that helps with this.

5. They can fit through very tight openings. Mine used to squeeze through the cracks under the doors in my house. Pretty much if they can get their head through the opening, they can fit their body through. This means that you have to watch them the first couple of times you let them run around to make sure they can't get into anything you don't want them in.

6. They are extremely curious, smart and stubborn. This combination will often get them in trouble. If they want to check something out, short of putting it completely out of their reach, there is nothing you can do to keep them from it. Mine got into the vegetable drawer while I was looking in the fridge. I didn't notice he was in there and it took me 2 hours to find him (lets just say he was not a happy ferret, but at least he was full on celery and carrots LOL).

7. They like to sleep in dark, enclosed and warm places. They sell all kinds of sleeping tents and hammocks for this.

8. They naturally go to the bathroom in corners. The best kind of litter box that I found was one shaped to fit right into the corner with two high sides and a short side for them to back up to it.

9. They are extremely hyper and love to play. Unfortunately, some of that "playing" consists of biting. I broke mine of that with pops on the nose. It's also smart to by them a lot of toys. Any cat and most dog toys work, but they also sell a lot made for ferrets.

10. The more you handle them the better they are going to be around people. They actually require quite a bit of attention and they will act out if they are not getting it.

Anyways, thats what I know from my experience. I loved having ferrets and plan on getting more when my daughter gets older. They are funny as hell to watch and do some of the weirdest things. I hope that this helps and I hope that you enjoy having a ferret.

Oh, I would also suggest that you buy a book on ferrets or at least check one out at the library. Or since this is the age of the internet, look for web pages on ferrets. These would help you with any specific questions that you might have.
