View Full Version : My first attempt at a custom cake

Today was my twins' 12th birthday. The wife had suggested we try and do something other than just another store-bought cake. I decided to make one myself. I wanted to make them a Van Halen themed cake (their favorite hard rock band...YES!! Makes me proud!), but guitar shaped cake pans are kind of small and wouldn't do the trick for all of their friends from school, plus cousins, grandparents, etc. So I decided to at least try and make one by hand.

I made a tracing of one of our Rock Band guitars to shape the cake body. I made the neck and head out of Rice Krispie treats wrapped in fondant. The trim and decorations are made from fondant as well. The stings are just some ribbon.

Humidty the last few days was a pain in the butt, and probably made this harder than necessary. I couldn't put as much detail into it as I wanted, but again this was my first try. I won't be working on "Ace of Cakes" anytime soon, but I thought it was okay for a first-time try...

And here's the pattern I used for reference...

nice work River, you'll be on a food network challenge in no time. Your guitar actually did turn out better than some of the ones i saw on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Anniversary challenge i watched

Actually for a first attempt that's pretty amazing cos I tried icing a cake with fondant icing a month or so ago and although it turned out ok...it was a nightmare! That stuff is awful to work with  It kept sticking to the counter top and I was literally scraping it off, chucking it out and starting again! My kitchen was upside down and I don't know how it got all over the tiled floor but I had to wash that thing 3 times before it was gone lol!

Thanks for all of the comments. I'm hoping to get a better picture soon from one of the other relatives. We were having the party outdoors in between rain showers, so we had to rush this out to get photos before everyone ate it. It was also very overcast at the moment.

I had a hell of a time with the red coloring. I used strawberry frosting and added a bunch of red food coloring. One batch came out to the perfect color, while the rest kept coming out pink. I couldn't figure out why, aside from the humidity.

Yeah I had that problem too but eventually got the red but it was so messy and sticky to work with ...consequently I went for a naked cake for my daughter's birthday lol

Everything except for the strings. In this case, they're strips of ribbon. Originally, I had wanted to use licorice or shredded Twizzlers for strings, but I was rushed for time and couldn't get them to look right.

Nice. Sad face must happen when the kids are eating away at something that took you hours huh?

No...by that point I was so tired and frustrated that I was saying "Dear god just eat it! I don't want to see it any more!" LOL.

I did that last year for my wife, she just looked at it then said how sweet, then laughed then said never again. In the trash it went. This year I'm buying a cake.
