I know there has been talk of this before but i'm still seeing a bit of confusion regarding the video embedding so I went ahead and made this full on tutorial, I hope it helps new and old members alike

So, you want to share your new favorite video? But you're unsure how to do it? Well then you've come to the right place because we are about to break down the whole process Barney style

Step 1:
first things first, you're going to need to be in the new post screen, which can be reached by one of two ways; If you are writing a new thread you click the "Post New Thread" button, and if you're replying to a pre-established thread you click the "reply to thread" button (pictured below)

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/reply.jpg

Step 2:
Alright, you've made it to the new post screen, now what? See this little icon here that looks like a strip of film?

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/insert.jpg

You guessed it, that's the insert video button. Go ahead, click it

Step 3:
What is this? A dialog box has popped up asking for mysterious information...

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/paste.jpg

This is where you are going to paste in the URL of the video you want to post, after which you will press the OK button if you are ready or the cancel button if you feel you're in too deep. Where do you get the URL? I'm glad you asked...

Step 4:
Fetching the URL. Every web page has a URL, even the video you're dying to post. here's one now

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/url.jpg

go ahead and copy and paste that sucker in the box from the previous step. An important thing to remember is to ONLY paste in the actual URL for the video, not any of the extra nonsense that will be tacked on under various circumstances. In this example we are using the ever popular youtube so here's what a youtube URL may look like with extra nonsense

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/extra.jpg

you do not want to include all that when you paste the url into the video text box or IT WILL NOT WORK. In the case of a youtube URL, it will always say youtube.com/watch?v=blahblah -->if it is then followed by &extrablahblah make sure you do not select anything from the & symbol onwards. If you are unsure on what should and should not be removed from the url, make an educated guess and delete the parts you feel are extras and hit the enter button. If the page loads again and you still have your video then you are golden, if you get an error page then hit the back button and try again. Now, where were we? ah yes...

Step 5:
You've pasted in the proper url and clicked OK. Now the url should come up in the text box with video tags around it. This is good. Now all that is left to do is click the "Submit" button...

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/submit.jpg

and your video will be on display for all to see, just like this one. congratulations!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iYmRyuhn9k

also note that if you want to be extra sure you've done everything right, you can click the "Preview" button before submitting, and if everything looks good then you can go ahead and press the submit button

But Max, I don't see any of those little icons, let alone a submit video icon, WTF mate?

ahh yes, if this is you, and you only see this when you are in the new post screen

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/basic.jpg

then this means you have your settings on basic editor. You probably don't want that do you? Then head over to the general settings page (http://usmilitarygamers.com/community/profile.php?do=editoptions) and scroll down to the bottom in the misc section

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/settings.jpg

you'll find that the basic setting is selected. Click either enhanced or standard, as both will give you access to the insert video button, and make sure you hit save at the bottom of the page. With that sorted out you can now follow the tutorial along with the rest of the class.

Didn't you say something about pictures?

I did say that, didn't I? Well added pictures works similarly to videos. From the new post screen, instead of clicking the video button, click this one that looks like a picture of a tree

http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/USMG2010/Tutorials/picture1.jpg

you have no doubt now been attacked by another dialog box asking for a URL for the image. In most browsers these days, right clicking the image in question will give you the option to copy the image url or source. paste that in and hit ok and you're all set. In some instances you are offered the option of inserting from the web or from your computer. If you choose the latter, just locate your image wherever it is stored on your hard drive and you're good.

That should about do it, post if you have any questions and someone will answer it as soon as possible provided it is humanly possible to answer the question...in question.

one final note I should probably mention is that you are not limited to only youtube for embedding videos. As said on the insert video clip pop up box, you can also use a url from:

Hulu (http://www.hulu.com/)
http://www.hulu.com/watch/123456/example-video

Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/)
http://vimeo.com/12345678

Dailymotion (http://www.dailymotion.com/us)
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/abc123_example_video

Metacafe (http://www.metacafe.com/)
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/12345/example_video/

facebook (www.facebook.com)
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=12345678

and another added note, Google is listed as a valid source but as of April 29th 2011 Google videos is no more so it is obviously not an option anymore

lol not just you Mardi, i spent several hours yesterday merging and moving video threads around and after seeing a bit of confusion and remembering how people were pretty confused when we first switched to vbulletins I figured it wouldn't hurt to make sure this information was out there for everyone. And i was bored lol

btw, if you can't add it normally via tapatalk can you type it out manually?
i.e. writing it like this:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=12345678
(the part inside the box only i mean. I have to use tags so you can display it properly)

i've never used tapatalk so i'm unaware of it's limitations

is there a way to upload a video directly from your phone or computer?

I don't really think so as far as these forums go, but your best bet might be to upload to YouTube or Facebook then link from there.

Smoke-almighty will no better than anyone else.

Not currently no.. and unfortunately, I have no plans on adding this as a service.
The problem with videos is their size. If I let everyone upload videos, I think we would quickly find our site running out of disk space. To allow it, I would need to keep a tight hold on disk space, which might lead to higher costs for the hosting plan for the site in the event we begin to get near the space threshold.

In the end, we are not a media streaming site, so I do not think the ends justify the means.
My recommendation, upload it to youtube, or something similar, then simply link it.

Yeah, youtube is a free upload...and if it's going to be banned there, odds are we don't want it being posted here either.

On that subject though, what about a USMG youtube page?

Funny how a question can start a revolution ha. I understand about the disk space. The reason I asked is because it took me forever to upload to youtube. What I was trying to do was help people from the Elite figure out weapon stats since only premium member can view the videos, I think....

sure.. well, i'm not 100% certain how we'll manage the youtube channel, but its created.. I cannot access youtube while at work, so if someone else wants to spearhead the effort, send me a PM, and I'll give you the login info.

Maybe we should make this public to the community then? Maybe we could get a volunteer
