As creators of the first person shooter genre, id Software have a lot to live up to. Yes, they have delivered unto us Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein. Games that made things like Call of Duty, Halo and Battlefield all possible. Id’s latest game, RAGE, sees the company attempting to raise the bar on the FPS genre to give fans something more than just a regular gun play experience.

This first behind the scenes video id has put out, aptly titled, “The Legacy of id”, talks about the company’s history and contributions to first person shooter games. Obviously, being a RAGE video, there will also be discussion regarding the October launching title, including how the id Tech 5 engine will be playing a large role in making RAGE what it is.

Id Software has released the second behind the scenes video of a six part series for their upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter, RAGE. The focus of this video this time around has to do with the story and some of the factions of the game the player will be coming across. Shooter fans are well aware that a good story can do a lot more to motivate actions for the player, rather than bounce from engagement to engagement with minimal care. What can you expect to encounter? Read on

The sixth and final behind-the-scenes video for id Software’s RAGE has been released, with the focus on the game’s art and sound design. As we all know, gameplay aside, if a game doesn’t look or sound cool, it can very much degrade the experience one can have. This last video from Bethesda will be showcasing the effort id Software is putting in to ensure the aural and visual acuity of RAGE will be one first person shooter fans will truly appreciate.

RAGE has achieved its means of beauty and graphical excellence the use of the John Carmack engineered id Tech 5, an engine that may very well be used in the next generation of gaming consoles. Through the use of that engine, artists have been able to create the ruin-filled vistas and environments the player will trudge through, shooting enemies in the face and/or other body parts. The art design of RAGE really does bring out that sense of a world that has emerged from one that was destroyed. Skyscrapers are just on the hinge of falling down, make-shift repairs are everywhere, and there is a large sense of improvisation in everything. A world fixed with duct tape and ingenuity.

No matter what the content of future video games is comprised of, there’s going to be a need for an engine to power it. Id Software, makers of Doom and Quake has come out and said id Tech 5, used to power RAGE, can be used in games on the next generation of consoles and beyond.

Upon a cursory inspection of RAGE, graphics lovers can be taken aback by how expansive and vivid environments and character models can be with id Tech 5. For a better visual aid, refer to the latest RAGE trailer, titled ‘The Uprising’. One of the most commonly used engines for developers right now is Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3, which Rocksteady Games will be using to power their games through 2014, including the upcoming Batman: Arkham City. Id Tech 5 (id Tech 4 was used to power Doom 3 in 2004) could be the next engine developers jump on for future titles as we start to enter the next console generation.

That's a joke right? Has to be. *looks again* Wow, they're serious. I got out of PC gaming because of the multi disk fiasco and now it returns. I don't know what I dislike most the multi disk part or their install directions:

Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you're done, uninstall and install disc two.

Installing is only a suggestion. No real need to do so imo. So I'm still getting it.

First review is in... and things aren't looking good. I kinda regret preordering this now. At least I got it on sale for only $42.99, trading it in should cover most of it.

don't go cashing in your game just yet, that review is WAY more harsh and unforgiving than anything else I've read so far. almost to the point where I wonder if the reviewer has something against the game or the devs.

I feel G4's Adam Sessler gives a far more comprehensive and well rounded review HERE (http://www.g4tv.com/games/xbox-360/46600/rage/review/)

and Kotaku's article HERE (http://www.g4tv.com/games/xbox-360/46600/rage/review/) gives several people's insight, all giving positive outlooks

another good review coming in courtesy Game2Gamer (http://game2gamer.com/?p=2118)

still liking Adam Sessler's the best so far because after reading/seeing so many of his reviews, previews, and discussions I've come to appreciate his level of passion and admiration for the industry as something that isn't far off from my own :D

yes i like all the reviews done by g4..morgan,adam & blair..they seem to be in touch with the average gamer...even if they have prefenance's of their own..but morgan does have a habit of droning on if she could care less about the title..lol you can hear it in her voice..

Oh no, of course I won't be trading it in before I play it. I only ment that I'm glad that I didn't drop $60 on a 10 hour game. I'm still looking forward too it, just not nearly as much as I previously was. It's looking to be a flawed, yet enjoyable game that is probably better left until the price drops due to its lack of content.

EDIT 1: Here is another review, this time from Ars Technica.

After playing 3 hours of the game so far here are my first impressions.

Seems a bit choppy in places, but that my be because I didn't install it yet. 22 gigs is quite a lot.

The driving is a bit awkward at first but once you get the hang of it, it is quite fun (especially the races). Just be sure to upgrade you buggy. Shields are your friends.

Save constantly. Having to restart a level 3 times is never fun. Stupid mini guns.

Stock up on vehicle and personal weapon ammo. You will run out and scaving for it doesn't give many bullets.

Wound allocation seems a bit off to me. Head shot a guy directly in the center of his dome and nothing. Graze his head and it explodes like a watermelon at a Ghallager show. o_o

So far though the game is awesome. Now for the long task of installing it to the 360. I'm sure it will be a lot better and smoother once I do so.

I received my copy today and I've got to say that so far I am not impressed. My first impression is that this game is a glorified rail-shooter. You run down corridors so thin that you can hardly even strafe until you get to a room full of enemies and kill them, then repeat. For a game billed as open world this is one of most linear experiences I've ever had. The "open" world just gives them them an excuse to send you back and forth between the same locations on fetch quests. Someone please tell me it gets better.

EDIT: I'd also like to note that the playstation version has noticeable texture pop-in. It's not so bad if you just ignore it though.

I just completed the game and my first impression still stands, this game is borderline terrible. The only positive point I can come up with is the graphics and even that is marred by noticeable texture pop-in. The shooting and driving mechanics are mediocre and the "story" is a complete joke. The entire game consists almost entirely of dreary fetch quests for people that I didn't even care about.

Levels are extremely linear with more arbitrary invisible walls than I could ever hope to count. The "open" world is just an excuse to send you back to the same locations multiple times. On one occasion I was even sent back through a level I had previously visited, only this time it was... wait for it... backwards!

Another thing that really annoyed me was that later in the game the enemies turn into the worst kind of bullet sponge, taking entire magazines directly to the face at point blank range before finally collapsing. Looting feels like a chore, you can pick up random useless items lying around the environment, good for nothing but sale. Yet when you kill an enemy you cannot take their weapon and are only rewarded with handful of bullets or some pocket change.

I could go on ad nauseam. In short, if you still feel the need to try this game, please, rent it. Even if you love it, it is so short that you will be glad you did.

With a regretful sigh, I have to agree with Tb13. Great premise, terrific graphics and an ultimately great game idea that was just poorly executed on so many levels. So I'm stuck with this till I get my achievements worth out of it and then trading it in for my reservation on MW3 or Skyrim. A shame really since it had such high hopes. I guess the hype was bigger than the game itself.

The PC release of Rage has been a little... well... let's just say fraught. The kids aren't happy, and they're not wrong about it. From horrendous texture pop-in issues to faulty drivers, the PC version of id Software's latest is shockingly troubled for such a PC-friendly studio.

A patch release over the weekend may not fix all of the issues, but it does add a number of advanced graphics settings that were bafflingly absent when the game launched last week. Basic stuff too, like VSync and Anistropic Filter options that you see in just about any other PC game release.

The patch notes on Steam lay out the particulars of the patch in fairly exhaustive detail. The notes begin with a message about Rage and its hands-off approach to video settings. The game won't auto-detect your system's limits and set the graphics sliders accordingly, which was a problem for many in the first place. The new settings will hopefully make things better for some.

The patch also adds a new Texture Cache option, which attempts to directly address the pop-in issues that people have been experiencing. I don't have the game installed on my own PC and so haven't tried the patch, but I encourage those who have to share their findings in the comments below.
