"Bulletstorm Meets Inglorious Bastards"
Originality is a hard thing to come by in the world of video games. Often times what's new is simply the old repackaged and re-branded -- not that that's always a bad thing. Enter Gearbox's Brothers in Arms: Furious 4; which takes the over-the-top points for stylish skills mechanic found in Bulletstorm and mashes it with the kill Hitler revenge fantasy from Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards.
We sat through a guided demo of the game today at E3. Four Ubisoft reps played through a co-op level that saw the titular Furious 4 crash Hitler's Oktoberfest carnival. Each rep played as a different character. The main screen showed the action from the point of view of Montana, a former lumberjack who uses tools like beartraps to kill the seemingly never-ending hordes of the third reich. Each kill gave the players points which could be used to upgrade equipment. Montana, for example, started the demo out with a simple bear trap that pinned enemies allowing for an easy kill. After upgrading at a conveniently placed radio (similar to Bulletstorm's ubiquitous dropkits) he outfitted the traps with grenades to blow up Nazi's after maiming them. The other weapons were just as brutal, flame throwers, electric grenades, thrown cattle brands, miniguns and more were on display. The scoring system didn't seem to have the variety of kill types needed to take advantage of the weapon variety, but that could be because they're not all yet fully implemented.
The game is designed to be played with four other players in co-op like Left 4 Dead. To make the most out of the game you'll likely need to play with three other humans assuming the rolls of Stitch, Chok, Crockett, and Montana. Crocket is a Texan who uses a six-shooter and ranching equipment to take down enemies. Chock, is an American Indian who wields a hatchet, and Stitch scarred and slightly insane Irish medic.
Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 is scheduled for release in early 2012.
