I'm all for following rules and regulations, but I really believe the officials got this wrong. Very, very wrong. The guy deserves a waiver, IMO.

that's kind of dumb but at least worst case scenario he just sits out the first game and will get to play game 2 and on, since he's only short 5 practice days anyways. I remember having a couple people the years I played that had to sit out of the first game because they missed X amount of days of practice

Most of the time if you miss summer training then you can't play the whole year at least that's how it was at my high school

at first glance that's the way i thought this was going, that he wasn't going to be able to play at all but reading through the article I saw that all they call for is 12 days of practice so after 5 more days he'd meet that requirement and be able to play. The big issue seems to be that this first game is against their big rivals so it's a heavy blow to have a star player benched

the coach was quoted as saying “I can’t sit here and dwell about it. I just have to prepare Eddie when he gets back, preapre this football team and move forward.” so to me that sounds like he gets to play the rest of the season, just not the first game

This is me being real guys and please don't take this to offense. I do believe serving the Military is a great and honorable thing to do. I did it and its brought me great results. It does suck for this person but the civilian world does have rules and regulations that everyone is govern by. Think about it. If you where a die hard father or mother who had a kid who went through the pain stake of all the practices and was told he would be the starting running back or linebacker but then was told no at the last minute because the original kid who played came back from basic. How mad would you be? I'm pretty sure you would be highly irritated. I know this person did a great thing by joining the Army but that gives him no room to be able to break rules and regulations. He should or knew what he was getting himself into when he signed up and left for the military. It would be a different story if he where able to stand in front of a sport committee to plead his case and then come back from basic to get his starting position, but this wasn't the story. Please don't take this and think i'm anti military, because i'm not. I wouldn't have joined if I was. Needless to say, people need to rethink their thoughts when they say the military should be put on a higher pedestal. I do agree the military should be compensated for their service. Such as pay and a better life while living in garrison, but last time I checked. The military is the life of the suck. You either learn to cope with it and drive on or you get out.

It's not really the part about bending the rules for him that gets me. Its the fact that they don't think he is in good enough shape to play football after just getting out of basic, and is afraid that he might get hurt because he is out of shape.

"Our sports medicine committee continues to feel that being in shape and being in football shape are two different things."
"But really at the end of the day, it's a combination of that and concern for safety that led the board to believe our currently policy should be enforced."

Valid point. I do have to say that Basic training, as far as for the P.T portion, was a joke. I can see why they would say he was unfit to play due to not being in "Football" shape. :p

"Four days a week, [Eddie Nuss] runs five miles with his gear and pack on,"

Now if this is correct, which it is most likely not, he SHOULD be in better shape than anyone out there lol

The workouts we did in football were intense but it was all about quickness and playing until the whistle. Basic was structured completely for overall benefits I worked out hard in both situations and got better results from basic. Lol screw rucksack running though that shit sucks!

pretty jacked situation for sure. I was in football and when I went to basic I was behind in running and that was it. I rocked push-ups and sit-ups etc. but the run was horrible. In football running for long periods of times was punishment... Any former football players can agree.
