Earthquake today

Everyone okay? I'm about 242 miles from what they say is the epicenter (Mineral, VA). I didn't feel it as I was in my SUV at the time driving to my kids' school, but my wife said people in her office building felt it. Her office is about eight miles west of our house.

Looking at the map they're showing on TV it looks like people felt it all the way up in Michigan.

I happened to be riding back to work after a Sports Themed Ops Lunch. We noticed our building evacuated and figured it was a fire drill. Next thing I know my mom is calling asking if I'm ok. Then we learned about the earthquake. My first thought was my dad who is at Ft. Belvoir, VA. The Cell towers and land lines were messed up. We got thru to my dad finally and found out he was ok and evacuated and on his way home. Klaws tried calling me and when I answered we both heard some strange lady instead of each other. It was all so surreal. When I braved entering our building to get my laptop to head home I noticed some separation of these metal plates in the floor by my pod. They were bent up in places and there was debris all over the floor. They tell me the expansion joints did their job. Well today when I went in there are Orange cones up where the cracks are and the debris is cleaned up. to be honest I'm not really comfortable with all that.

Earthquake felt in Southern Tier NY

As a 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered near Mineral, Va., rocked the mid-Atlantic states Tuesday afternoon -- forcing evacuation of the Capitol Building and the Pentagon -- tremors were felt in Watkins Glen and other Southern Tier communities. Watkins Glen Schools Superintendent Tom Phillips said the shaking, which struck shortly before 2 p.m., forced evacuation of the school district offices.

"I never felt anything like it," he said. "I was in my chair, and it felt like somebody grabbed it. Some people who were standing lost their balance and sat down. The pictures on the wall were shaking, and the shades on the windows were going back and forth."

Phillips said the shaking lasted "a good 10 seconds or more" and "we got everyone out of the building." After they reentered, "there was a second one, but quick. You could see the pictures moving, and then it stopped."

Initial reports said shaking was also felt in Elmira, Bath and in Odessa, where Village Clerk Kristi Pierce said her desk shook for at least 10 seconds, "and probably longer."
