I'm sure everyone is aware that the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks is coming up on Sunday. There's a lot of talk of reflection and remembrance being in order on that day. According to most accounts, the first plane struck the north tower of the World Trade Center at around 8:45 a.m. eastern time.

I remember I was getting my son ready to go to a physical therapy appointment. My mother-in-law had come to the house at about 9:15 and asked if I saw what was going on on TV. I flipped it on, just as my wife called from work to also asked if I'd seen it. I remember being completely numb and totally speechless for the first time in a long time.

I went ahead and took my son to his appointment, but when I got to the therapy office it was if everything was going in slow motion. They cut his appointment short, as nobody could focus due to what was going on and we headed back home. We got back in time to see the north tower collapse, unfortunately.

The rest, as they say, is history. Nobody has been the same since.

Where were you and what were you doing?

BTW, I would propose a "day of silence" on 9/11. By that, I suggest that we have some kind of agreement to not post here on the forums for that entire day (or even lock the forums for a 24 hour period). Maybe temporarily insert some kind of a splash page that says something about "We Will Never Forget" or something to that effect.

It's just a suggestion, so if it doesn't sound like something that would fly, that's fine.

I was barely waking up but when I got to school all we did was watch the news on tv in English class during my sophomore yr in high school

I was working for a power company called REC in northern Oklahoma when we heard it on the radio, we turned the truck around and headed for a horse ranch that we worked the day before, it wasn't far from our position. When we got there the old cowboy who ran the place had us come inside and watch it on TV. We watched in complete silence as that plane flew straight into the second tower, and were horrified when they both fell. The home office called shortly after and told us to suspend work and ride home. We did and while I was off for that week I gave some recruiters a call......

I was at work when they announced the first plane hitting the tower on the radio. We thought it was a tragic accident. I then went to the Directors office to drop off some charts I did an everyone from the front office was in there watching the TV. I peeked in the door just as they announced another plane hit the other tower. I was like "no way in hell was that an accident". I ran back to my office to tell my partner just as the radio announced yet another plane hit the Pentagon. I remember feeling like my world was turning upside down. I quit smoking the day before and immediately started up again. I remember shaking and taking a drag on the cigarette. Looked t my partner and said " what the f*** is going on?". They sent us all home right after that and we were on high alert. Fort Monmouth happened to be practicing terrorist drills that week so it didn't take much to put security in action. The following day I got a call from the Deputy Director that I has just been placed on the essential personnel list and to report the next day. It was very unnerving to go through a heavily guarded gate that just the day before had been wide open to anyone. That huge deserted bldg was strange to be in as well. The following week my butt was on an Acela express to Washington DC.

I was at work, At that point I had finished 1 yr of colledge. I was in the recruiters station the next week asking for a combat arms MOS.

I was on a FTX at Ft Polk, LA. JRTC(Joint Readiness Training Center).. we had just finished installing MILES on our Aircraft and one of the AVIM engine mechanics ran by our bird and yelled in to the back of our bird that a plane had hit the tower in nyc... i was like wahhh i though it was a "Training Mission" and we were about to start playing the game at JRTC..but then one of the electricians ran by our bird and yelled in "Oh Shit they hit the other tower" and he ran off? next thing i know 150 plus people are walking towards the Avionics trailer....cause they had a 3 inch Black and White and everyone was trying to get in the trailer to see what the hell was going on.. as i walk over to Production Control someone else said ..."AH hell they hit the Pentagon too..were going to war!"..i stood there in complete disbelieving... next thing the 1SG comes out yelling lock up all equipment and head back to the circus tent.. so we all leave the flight line and head back to the tent. about 2 hours of waiting the 1sg calls all the NCO's Over and say' i know we just got here a couple days but the FTX is Cancelled were heading back to home base Hunter ...we are flying all the equipment back to Ft Bragg to debrief and the on to Savannah...home base.... We where like wahhh..no way..needless to say in less then 24 hours we had made it back.. its crazy too cause when we left we spent 1 week at Ft Bragg before to sync up with our supporting units...at that time Ft Bragg was Wide open by the time we flew back they had that based so closed up it was incredible... fencing everywhere, gate guards everywhere, and roving guards with dogs and shot guns!!!! and then we got back to Hunter...and the night mare began with guard duty out the ASS!! and pre load up for OEF 1....and the Desert rotations started!!!ugghhh!!!

I was working at home when this happened was watching the news when they said a small plane hit the towers then watched when the 2nd plane hit. Go the wife to come home then cancelled all the teleconferences for the day. I was lucky I had some direct reports that had to drive across several states to get home since no-one was flying for about a week.

BTW - I was standing the watch, Active Duty in Mayport FL, on Sept 11, 2001. We were in the preps of lighting off to head down into the Caribbean for some workups pre-deployment. Obviously, with what happened, we were 1 of the first responding ships along with 2 other aircraft carriers from Norfolk right off the shore of NYC. The largest assembly of US naval military might since probably the WW's.

Truely a terrifying and awesome experience.

By coincidence, my son has to write a report on 9/11. Among them, 10 facts about that day, and he has to write about where he and the rest of his family were that day, plus what we were doing at the time. Almost too convenient that I already revisited that at the beginning of this thread.

I had to show my son and his twin sister the videos from 9/11 this evening. They were both only 2 years-old when that happened, and they really don't remember it at all. That was very surreal to watch all of that footage again.

I was working at the time in a Fitness Gym. My buddy (who owned the place and lived upstairs) came down and turned the big screen TV on and we sat there and watched in disbelieve... especially when we saw the 2nd plane hit. I also remember that was the quietest nigh I have ever heard. You heard no traffic on the road....there was just total silence. At approximately 10pm I heard a plane and went outside and watching it fly over the lake. I then heard louder planes and the I saw 2 planes fly next to the 1st plane I heard. I learned the next day that some moron decided to take a flying student up for some night flying. It was the wrong move because he was quickly escorted back down by the USAF.

I like the image, and the redirect idea. Just put a statement on the bottom of the image with a link to the forums.

That day...

I was sat on the sofa feeding my baby girl who was 4 months old at the time. I was talking on the phone to my friend Claire when she suddenly shrieked "Oh my God quick put the tv on, a plane has just hit the World Trade Centre!"

Then we both just sat and watched the horror unfold on the News, still holding the phones ...but not saying a word.

The rest is history as they say.

I was in the 7th grade getting ready to school when my sister called from college and had us turn on the TV. we were watching it for about 5 min when the first tower collapsed. Every class I was in that day we did noting but watch CNN. Kinda hard to believe it was 10 years ago.

Yes that's perfect now...a great tribute.

I didn't notice the towers as the number '11' the first time I looked at it...good job :)

Those light beacons they have at Ground Zero again are so sad aren't they :( Like ghost towers.

It must be really eerie and so heart rending to be there when they are beaming up!

Yes, they are... I was there just after they put the lights up. It really brought chills and A LOT of anger to me.

I was in my senior year of high school. Living with a friend because my father kick me out of the house. With good reason since I cussed him out and threatened to beat his ass. On that morning my mom called and asked if I know what was happening and I told her that I was watching it all on TV. We were all in disbelief while watching what was happening, at the time still not sure if it was an accident or if what actually happend really did.

That day was a big reason of why I joined the Marine Corps. I wanted to do my part and felt a job needed to be done and it was the perfect opportunity. I will also never regret my decision to join, I would do it again. These ten years have seemed to pass so quickly...

I did. They don't light them up anymore. I was also at the "party" at Ground Zero when "Geronimo" was finally found and dispatched. You might have seen me on the news lol

I was in Orlando at disney World. They rushed everyone to the gates but we all stood around and while we were watching the second plane hit the towers. As soon as we got home after driving from Orlando, i enlisted.

They are amazing aren't they! What a lovely way to remember. Very sad to look at but such an awesome tribute too. I hope they always shine on 9/11

First off, I want to say thank to everyone who added to this thread. It's very hard to grasp that it's been a decade since that terrible day, especially since the events and images are still so vivid in the mind's eye. I hope others will continue to add to this thread with memories of where they were on that day.

With that being said, I want to post this link to a collection of photos from 9/11 from Yahoo. I think one of the most striking pictures is #12, where then President Bush is being told by his chief of staff what has happened. That look in Bush's eyes is very, very telling. At that moment, you have to wonder what's going through his head and how he handled that point in time considering he was visiting school children. He had the weight of the world placed on him in that instant.

I was on deploymnet to Iceland, getting ready to go on DET to Norway, I was in maintenance control when the second plane hit, we saw it live as it happened. It was surreal, we all stood in silence as that fucking second plane hit. The General Alarm sounded off and the base ready planes took off, and our ready plane took off. The base locked down for the rest of the day. Civilians working on base left via Keflavik International, or so I thought. I will never forget that.
