Former Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk Dev Neversoft Creating an FPS

Multiple job listings point to the studio's new project being an FPS

Job listings at Neversoft's website have revealed the company is at work -- or soon will be -- on a first-person shooter.

As noticed by GamerZines (http://www.gamerzines.com/xbox-360/news/guitar-hero-dev-working-on-fps.html) (via Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-22-guitar-hero-dev-is-working-on-an-fps)), there are multiple positions related to FPSes at the jobs area (http://www.neversoft.com/site/hiring.html) of Neversoft's website. These include network programmer, senior concept artist, senior level designer, senior technical artist, level designer, and Windows PC platform lead engineer. None of the listings reference anything specifically, though they do mention that employees would be working on "our new FPS."

It was reported (http://www.1up.com/news/neversoft-hiring-action-shooter-game) last year that Neversoft was looking to hire for a new "action shooter" game.

Neversoft was first founded in 1994 and is best known as the developer of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (http://www.1up.com/games/ps1/tony-hawk-ps2/) series and the Guitar Hero series since Guitar Hero III (http://www.1up.com/games/xbox360/guitar-hero-iii/). The last game it shipped was Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (http://www.1up.com/games/xbox360/warriors-rock), and before that it produced Band Hero (http://www.1up.com/games/ps3/band-hero).

It's not completely new to the shooter genre -- it developed Gun (http://www.1up.com/games/xbox/gun) in 2005. It was a third-person game, not first-person, but it's still a great deal closer to the FPS genre than either Tony Hawk or Guitar Hero. Well gun wasnt horrible so I guess they can work around what went wrong with gun and just build off there.

Call Of Duty Is Now In The Hands Of Tony Hawk Dev Neversoft

Neversoft, the creator of the Tony Hawk series and developer of all latter-day Guitar Hero titles, is now working on yet another of Activision's giant money-maker franchises: Call of Duty. An update on the developer's website states it pretty darn clearly: "We have molded our team into a crack squad of eager developers ready to push the First Person Action genre in support of Activision's Call of Duty franchise."

It's about time, I say. There's a lot of talent at Neversoft. Forget about Guitar Hero; this crew created Tony Hawk and then, over the course of nine games, somehow managed to put an interesting spin on each new entry (to varying degrees of success, admittedly). There hasn't been a Neversoft-developed release since 2010's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. So yes. About time.


The most obvious possibility is that Neversoft is working on Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, the upcoming PlayStation Vita game that was confirmed in name only at Sony's pre-E3 2012 presser for a release "this holiday." That may well be the case, but it's worth noting that the range of open job listings at the studio suggest that whatever they're working on, it's not going to be ready by "this holiday."

It's certainly possible that Neversoft is working on Declassified as well, and was doing so long before the game's title was revealed at E3. In which case those open positions could then connect to another Call of Duty game.

This is all speculation, however. The only 100 percent confirmed fact is that Neversoft is now a Call of Duty dev. We've reached out to Activision for additional comment and context, but I wouldn't expect too much; Call of Duty reveals tend to live on their own strictly defined schedule.
