curious, does anybody know if u can get get another hard drive or add an external to your PS3 for more memory? Just wondering cuz i still have one of the first builds thats only got a 40GB harddrive

Yes, you can upgrade your hard drive. If you go to the following link, it walks you through. The key thing is to backup all of your data.

They do have them and you can install them but I would debate if it is an original, if maybe the better money is buying a new PS3. I only say it because they have upgraded some specs and I once upgraded the drive for my 360,and this was back in the first series of them, and within a month it was a nice big Red Ring anchor. I ended up using the hard drive as a backup network drive .... just food for thought,

but I think you can get a replacement for 90 bucks for a 500 GB drive or an external works great and just format it to fat32 for PS3 to see it.

as said above, yeah the PS3 can work with any USB external hard drive so long as it is fat32 formatted and you can also use nearly any sata 2.5" laptop hard drive, so it is very simple to upgrade from your 40gig to a 500gig for cheap. the stock PS3 drives run at 5400rpm and while there is no reason why you can't upgrade to a 7200rpm drive, the performance increase is minimal so you're better off saving yourself the money. I've also heard word of some people using SSDs and increasing overall performance speed but this comes at a larger price tag and less reliability since it hasn't been tested nearly as much. As far as worrying about getting an "offical" branded upgrade HDD, don't because there really is no such thing. I forget the brand of HDD Sony puts in stock but they don't exclusively recommend that brand so it's going to come down to personal preference. Read the customer reviews on various drives to help you make your decision because often times you'll find people chiming in saying they used the drive in their ps3 with great success, or adversely, with difficulties.

I formatted my 500gb external to fat32 and it works, but all saved games and dlc must be stored on the ps3 itself. The only things I got on my external are movies, music, and pics.

same with me, all my media is on a 500gig external drive that i swap back and forth from my ps3 and wii (i have the drive dual partitioned so that half of it stores wii games and the other half is media) but even then, my 120gig drive is very full, I think i have >10gigs of space remaining and it's due time for an upgrade. 30+ downloaded games + all the game saves and update data takes it toll on drive space quickly lol

my external drive come fat32 formatted out of the box though and instructed on how to change to NTFS if using a windows pc for better performance, so there's a good chance you won't have to do anything to the drive to have it set up for use on your PS3

I had the same problem a while back with running out of space. So I did some searching and came out with a 720GB HD for the PS3 and 3TB External. Since everything now days is NTFS formatted already. I let the PS3 Do its thing with the internal HD and went to work on the external, the 3TB was easy and quick on the MacBook Pro. at the end Its going to be a while before I need to upgrade. best thing I can tell you is to keep on looking for a HD online to get a better price.
