For those who are fans of the Rainbow 6 series there is some news on the next title in the Rainbow 6 franchise.

OXM:

Ubisoft's Rainbow 6 franchise has largely existed outside of the FPS mega-boom of the past 3-4 years. The last first-person shooter to bear Tom Clancy's name was Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, which released a scant six months after the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. In the time since, we've seen many contenders to Activision's throne without seeing much out of one of the oldest military FPS franchises weigh in. That will change in 2013 as Ubisoft unleashes Rainbow 6 Patriots on the world.

In Rainbow 6 Patriots, the series' namesake Rainbow Team has to face a new terror threat from within the US. The enemies, known as "True Patriots," are a organized and militarized group angered by greed and corporations and bringing the fight to major metropolitan areas. The enemies in Rainbow 6 Patriots will force the player to make tough choices regarding the lives of US citizens.

Ubisoft Montreal is serving as the lead development studio, with Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm providing additional support. You can watch a target trailer featuring the game's story-focused combat at GameInformer.com, keep up with the game's development by visiting Rainbow6.com, while also keeping tabs on social networks via Facebook and Twitter.

When pitching projects internally, development teams frequently create a target video to illustrate their vision for the game. Rarely does this footage see the light of day outside the confines of the publisher, but today you get a chance to see a prototype of the bold approach Ubisoft Montreal is taking to moving single-player shooter campaigns away from the Call of Duty "follow me" template and into uncharted territory. We'll let the video speak for itself.

R6: Vegas was the game that cemented me into the FPS genre. I love the Rainbow 6 series, I used to run with a pistol and bang out headshots until the other team would rage quit lol. Good times.....

When Game Informer reported the leadership change at the upper echelons of the Rainbow 6 Patriots development team, many commentators wondered why Ubisoft would move so aggressively away from such a promising concept for a first-person shooter. Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat says that in spite of the restructuring, the vision that creative director David Sears shared with us on our cover story visit is still largely intact.

We spoke with Mallat, who said Sears' departure from the project was a mutual decision between himself and Ubisoft Montreal, and that it isn't affecting the company's commitment to the game.

"We're definitely going on with Rainbow, too, evolving the vision that came from David's initial input," he told us in an interview today.

Though Sears and the other staffers mentioned in the original report are no longer on Team Rainbow, both Mallat and Sears confirmed that he is still employed by Ubisoft Montreal.

"To paraphrase Mark Twain, I'm not dead, and Rainbow is still very much alive," Sears said. "I've watched the forum comments, and one of the things that's really important for everyone to understand is senior management and the editorial group challenged me to create something plausible, relevant, and that touches on the current fears of the U.S. citizens to the point that I was almost surprised myself we were taking these creative risks. They are still behind it. I spent time working on it because I love it, but there comes a point where you give the vision to everybody and they embrace it and start telling me what the vision is now."

As for Sears' new role, Mallat says Ubisoft Montreal has moved him onto "a major project for a major brand."

"Another opportunity arose that was a really good fit, and I am more than delighted to contribute to that," Sears said.

Mallat also confirmed that Rainbow 6 Patriots is still slated for a 2013 return.

I loved the older R6 games. Was a shooter that was built for peiple who play shooters not so some 14 year old who can hardly handle the controls... It doesnt have go user friendly for them or for technology illiterate people to play. M for mature.... No kids and no oldies.... They made the game for people with a passion and the talent to play...
