has anyone tried the new 2011 cpu socket which has 6 cores? or does anyone know if its better to get that or wait for the 8 core to build a custom rig?

I've got the 3930K. It's overkill for what I do. What do you use your computer for? I can't think of much that requires more than 6 cores plus hyperthreading. I think 8 core will be on next tech though with 3D transistors and stuff.

is it better to go with gigabyte or is MSI or EVGA better?

EVGA has legendary reliability and support. But the GB one has a great cooling setup with the three fans and is quiet too. That's the reason I went with that particular one.
