FYI: This story relates to this post (http://usmilitarygamers.com/community/showthread.php?t=2159&highlight=mechwarrior)that Sav started a long while back.

Now we're talkin'! MechWarrior was one of my all time favorites. Can't wait for this one.

MechWarrior Online preview
“We want to make the next true MechWarrior sequel,” says Piranha Games
Words: Tyler Nagata on December 21, 2011

It’s been about ten years since we’ve seen a new MechWarrior game. The giant BattleTech beasts have been slumbering and we’ve missed them greatly. Since the halcyon days of the MechWarrior series in the early ’90s, it feels like the simulation genre on the PC has taken a nose dive. There’s no shortage of games simulating the experience of driving trains, buses, or even garbage trucks. But where are the sims for giant mechs battling over war torn planets? Fortunately, it looks like it’s finally time to dust off your flight stick with the upcoming 2012 launch of MechWarrior Online.

We recently spent some time with Piranha Games creative director Bryan Ekman and president Russ Bullock to find out more about the studio’s philosophy on modernizing mech combat while staying true to the series’ robotic roots. Both Ekman and Bullock recall fond memories of the original MechWarrior titles and the BattleTech tabletop strategy game. “We want to make the next true MechWarrior sequel,” says Bullock.

For Piranha Games, part of that means looking towards streamlining the best experiences from the PC versions of the game more so than the simpler console releases. With MechWarrior Online, the developers are aiming for a deeper control system that captures the complexity of piloting a mech. “MechWarriors have a lot of controls,” explains Ekman. "You have torso twisting, you have aiming, you have weapon firing, you have weapon grouping and group firing, you have jump jets, [and] you have throttle…"

“We’re focused on using the PC and its input devices to the max,” continues Ekman. “We’re going to allow players to customize those devices however they see fit, and we’re going to be supporting those devices as much as possible.” You can expect the mech sim to support full keyboard and mouse and joystick setups from the start.

But that doesn’t mean that MechWarrior Online will just be a carbon copy of its predecessors. The IP is nearly 30 years old and Piranha Games is looking at how to evolve the MechWarrior experience with new technology while retaining the essence of what they loved most about the series. “Previous MechWarrior games were very open,” explains Ekman, adding, “You could see enemies coming from great distances. But now we are able to make the battles really personable and have them get up close and fight in detailed city environments detailed landscapes.” But it’s not just about making the game look better. It’s also about bringing the series’ more strategic and teamwork elements to the frontline of battles and cutting out the things that aren’t so much fun today.

Bullock points to the abundance of circle strafing enemies and aiming for the legs as one MechWarrior legacy that doesn’t need to be revisited. Instead, Piranha Games is focusing on highlighting what it’s calling “role warfare.”

The current plan is to host a maximum of 24 players for 12 vs. 12 matches averaging 15-20 minutes in length. With a progression system based more on loyalty and mastering your team role and the type of mechs you pilot rather than an XP-only system that ranks you up based on your kill count. Bullock highlights some of the MechWarrior roles and what the team is shooting for with MechWarrior Online: “Each of the mechs have a specific and useful role. A Lance unit in the MechWarrior lore is made up by four mechs and we really want that Lance unit to be a strong aspect of gameplay. You’ll want to make up that Lance with the appropriate types of mechs, both scout mechs and medium, heavy, and assault mechs.”

This emphasis on role warfare and the persistency of the world as factions battle around the clock is the heart of what Piranha Games hopes to add. “That brings a level of modernization to gameplay that MechWarrior hasn’t had before. Before, it was a fairly unapologetic arms race to the heaviest of mechs, but our design will be quite different,” says Bullock. He doesn’t want players to spend countless hours grinding for the supposed “best” mech. Without going into too much detail, he emphasizes that players will be rewarded for focusing on teamwork and playing their roles appropriately.

Expect more details and impressions on how MechWarrior Online is shaping up as the game’s 2012 launch date draws closer. In the meantime, you can find out more by visiting the game’s official site.

"We are Clan Wolf, children of Kerensky. We carry the Honor of his name on our shoulders, as our fathers did in the foward. The Rememberance speaks to us of the Evil in Man's will, of the reasons for Exodus, ...and the Rights of the Traveller. Arcadia is our Destiny and our Right. Enlightenment is our Gift. By the Bloodnames of our Founders we must return, return and protect what is unique among the Stars. Terra awaits us as it was Written. We are the last of the Wardens. The sole Hope for Earth."

Clans are fun, and a good alternative to the Feudal Inner Sphere

The reworked concept now aims to produce a multi-player online game with a setting starting out just before the Clan Invasion (http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Clan_Invasion), and then following the in-universe timeline at a pace of one day per real day.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. With it built like this it doesn't look like we could start out as a "Clan" member. But maby in the future as a DLC or expansion.

MWO was at GDC yesterday... Look at these screens!!!

Mech warfare is Piranha's fancy term for utilizing the complex 'Mechs in combat. Every cockpit for every 'Mech is unique, as Piranha wants to make the player feel as if he or she is the actual pilot in the machine. The HUD is a vital part of the feedback that will help you control the vehicle, and the devs said that when you take damage, you'll even see instrument panels explode and spark. Lasers will carve lines of molten steel into enemies -- and it'll show -- and explosions will dent armor.

'Mechs range from the light 20-ton models to 100-ton beasts, with front and rear armor to protect the pilot. Weapons can be divided up into three groups, which is helpful when dividing between torso-based and arm based. Interestingly enough, your arms and torso can target different enemies at the same time.

If your 'Mech takes too much damage in a fight, you'll have to take it to the shop and get it repaired before heading out again.

Can't wait this might be huge if only they could put something like this on Xbox or PS3. I hope the graphic requirements are not out of this world.

LOL Smith, its Clan Wolf not Wolf Clan and besides, the only great clan in Mechwarrior and BattleTech is Clan Jade Falcon, but as of right now u can only play as a Merc unit or serve one of the Inner Sphere Houses, i.e. Draconis COmbine or House Davion or Steiner. They will be releaseing the Clans later on but not in the release as im tracking as of right now. But again Clan Jade Falcon is better than all of the Clans lol.

I only played single player and lan....but as I remember, you could choose between the three which in those modes, amounted to little more than insignia skins...

Yea in the game it was skin change, but in this game it will mean a hell lot of difference. Each House will have their own different advantages and planets they alrdy own. As the Merc Units will operate under who pays for them. When the clans come out then they will have the same style of play, they will have their own feel, their own uniq mechs such as Omni Mechs (Can't wait to get my hands on a Thor or Madcat), their own planets, the Trials, and their own unique storyline in the game. SO yea i wanna serve under the clans lol.

Thor and Madcat (Timberwolf as some call it) are Heavy Mechs usually over 60-70 Tons depending on what u equiped it with. With the Firefly i think ur trying to remember the Kitfox, a light mech that is mainly used for scouting purposes, but in this game they will be in high demand for scouting reports. My play style in Mechwarrior was more of a shoot u from a distance with my LRMs and then get in close for my PPCs and Machine Guns to bring up ur Heat Sinks in ur mech. Now i loved to equip a flamer II just to bring up ur heatsinks to make u shutdown and then finish u off with my PPCs or MPLs (Medium Pulse Lasers). Alot of people in the Inner Sphere hated me for it online, lmao

Wow a Marauder, im surprised u didnt say a Wasp, Stinger, or even the LAMs. Hell even mentioning a Archer or Warhammer can show age lol. Dont get involved in naming old time mechs with me lol. I love the old timers, some of the new mechs Inner Sphere and Clan mech are pretty cool like the Nova Cat, Love that mech.
