Rabies!?

Ok so I was reading about different States of America and the best places to visit just on case I head over again one day, and I was really shocked to discover that rabies is present in most of them in wild animals or more commonly bats! Eek! :eek:

We are a rabies free country here in the UK and I always worry that one day it will come back (probably a deep set phobia from watching Cujo as a kid or something lol) and it freaks me out a bit. :eek:

So anyway, how much of a problem is it over there? As when I mentioned it to a Texan friend the other day he thought I was crazy as he said he'd never even concerned himself with it before lol!

Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried. I am a hunter, and spend ALOT of time outdoors, and I have yet to get bit by anything. Personally, I would be more worried about poisnous snakes and spiders. Brown recluse and black widows scare the shit out of me. :eek:

Black widows? !! :eek: You have those too? Lol it's a madhouse! :eek:

What about the rabid bats though? They fly into your house and they don't necessarily have rabies, they just carry the virus and if they bite you, you get it! :eek:

Yeah, we have bats, but not a concern either. One of the things I like to do while night fishing is to shine the flashlight in the sky and the bats start doing fly-bys. I have done this hundreds of times, and the bats come close enough to feel the wind off their wings, and have yet to been hit or bit. :D

yeah just dont pet any stray animals and youll be fine! and bats usally are more scared of you and light then anything else..

uk is rabies free... wow did not know that...

afghan has a huge rabies problem... all the strays they have here..

hell during the spring, summer and fall always check for ticks, I have several friends that have gotten lime disease not fun and never allow the dog to sleep in your bed, another way to get ticks on you.

Bats are great when fishing on a lake at dusk. They keep the mosquitoes away. I did have one fly by so close to the water it smacked my line. The vibration triggered a fish to bite too =). Helpful little buggers.

With my wife being a Vet Tech or I also known as a Vet Nurse in other parts of the world. Her and I both have our Rabies shots.I really don't think that neither of us need it because she says that in her 11 years as a vet she has had once case of Rabies. It really isn't something to really worry about here. I was more worried about Rabies when I was in Bosnia.

One of my soldiers in Afghan got bit by a rabid dog. The dog was acting strange at the time but walked away from the soldiers as they approached. The next thing they knew the dog came running around the building and latched onto his hand. After shooting the dog numerous times, cutting the head off and a medavac trip later, loh and behold the dog had rabies. You're worried about getting shot or blown up by IEDs and never thought about rabies. We also killed a handfull of small cobras while there.

yeah there are a few you tube videos with 203 rounds and dogs....and yeah they are laughing when it get obliterated(stress i would assume)... but after hearing the horror stories on what happens when you contract rabies and possibly die from it... screw those wild animals... dont trust them like i dont trust the locals...mom, dad, or kid.... doesnt matter...my three rules out here!! keep your head on a swivel, situational awareness, and trust NO ONE!!

Omg that's scary! Was he ok? Yeah though, I read that it's worse for rabies over there.

My daughter went to Tunisia a few years back and her boyfriend went into a shop whilst she waited outside, when he came out she was crouched down petting a bunch of stray, skinny, scraggy, mangy cats lol!

He was like "arghh what you doing" lmao!

She's says "aw look, come and see the cute little cats"

I'll just reiterate what everyone posted above. The chances of coming across an animal with rabies and becoming infected is really, really low. Most wild animals tend to avoid humans altogether. We have had bats in our attic before, and never had any sort of issue with them. If anything, I'm glad they're around in the summer as they help keep the bugs down (especially mosquitoes).

Are there any places in particular you were considering visiting, or just browsing in general?

I live in the mountains in California really all that I have to worry about is the damn deer, bear, tourist, and what ever else running in front of my truck. In the real back woods you have to worry about the mountain lions stalking you.

Yeah rabies is pretty uncommon. You can be sure you know what to do so that you feel better. If some bat bites you go get the rabies shots is all you really need to know.but it kind of falls in the category of what to do if theres a lightning strike or how to escape from an arm stuck in hay baler.it happens but not something to really fret about unless your a storm chaser or critter wrangler. Interesting side note though there has only been one human in all of recorded history to recover from rabies once symptoms presented. She got it after she picked up a bat she thought was unconscious after it flew into a window.it want and it bit her. She didn't go get it looked at and was later hospitalized.they induced a comma and pumped her full of antivirals and experimental drugs and she eventually recovered.so it's not 100% fatal anymore. So thats good news.

Yeah I read about her, she was a young kid too. They reckon only about 2 in 10 would survive that scenario though...she was very lucky and made of strong stuff!

Yes, he was ok. Needed the vacine but returned to duty in a few days. The soldiers on the ground did the right thing by kepping the head (for tests).

Location. It's set in Forks. Dinky-dick town in NW Washington. Used to be a good place to go hunting. Now it's too loaded with Twi-hards to do much of anything.

Well it depends on what your comparing it with. I have lived in a lot of places and am currently living in Washington. The cost of living here is higher then the mid-west and the south and I assume on par with places like New York and maybe Chicago. Seattle is home to Microsoft, Starbucks and countless other companies so combine that with the the scenery and amazing beauty = $. However its not out of reach and as a visitor it would most likely not even be noticeable. Plus the pound is worth more then the dollar :D

It must just seem higher because I live near Seattle and the last few states I lived in were cheaper. It is really worth coming here though if you like nature. I tend to move around a bit and have not found a place with so many breath taking views since I left Germany.

Back on the actual topic though I agree with everyone else..Rabies is just something to keep in the back of your mind but I have never even seen an animal with it in the states.

It always irritated me that saint Patrick was able to con us Irish into thinking we gad snakes too. What a scam, not hard to drive all the snakes from Ireland when we never actually had any.
Besides, I'd be more concerned with the gun toting retards in the south, the hippies in Colorado, and the dipshits in California than the local fauna.
All kidding aside, I love Colorado, Breckenridge and Vail in particular, would love to visit Washington or Oregon, and it's always nice here in lovely south Florida.

Like Shadow said, it's about middle of the board. And it has a great range of small town to big city, with scenery I'd put up against anywhere.

Sorry I'm not sure what a dentist is? Is it a small animal or a big animal? Or a bird...maybe it's a bird? Yes though you're quite right, we are pretty 'dangerous animal' free here, and the safest place to live in that respect. Fox hunting is banned too I'm afraid.

While it is true that its located in the south of the country, you would be hard pressed to find a southerner who accepts Florida or a Floridian who claims its part of the south. Maybe in the panhandle but that's probably the only place. Two very different cultures. Nothing wrong with either though and I did enjoy my time in that section of the country.

Yeah, I live in the panhandle and there are some very destinct 'southerners' here, but if u go out side the panhandle its a whole another story.
